OK folks now it's time for overated guitarists, love the Dead but Bob Weir is, dare I say overated, granted he was mostly rythym but 30 years with Jerry he didn't learn a darn thing. I must be a glutton for punishment. Let the attacks fly.

Agreed. Not that they aren't excellent players, they are, but the accolades they get are way over the top.

I've seen him live a bunch of times and listened to Clapton for long enough to know that he is completely overated!!!!(IMO)
It seems to me that anything he's done that worth listening to, He always has a better player writing, playing, or flat out holding his hand for him(ex. Duane, JJ Cale, ect.)

I always like the story EC told about the first time he met Robbie Robertson(while dressed in a flashy outfit w/ pink pants), Clapton asked Robertson "would you like to jam sometime?" Robertson replied "We don't jam, Man"

Herring! The fact he plays so fluidly, can truly improvise like Bird, Trane, etc. (by improvise I mean truly improvise on the spot - not just play licks that have worked before in the same context) can sound great in any setting (see Project Z, Jazz is Dead, Panic...those groups are totally different) and has such a solid ground with his musical knowledge...he's a guy that every musician, not just guitarist, should strive to be like.
He plays as well "outside the box" as he does in it, it's obvious doesn't have any sorta crutch to rely on...he's not a household name...how's he overrated?

sorry....but i'm allowed to not dig his sound---he is a fine player, seems like a wonderful human being(based only on stuff i've read)...but his sound doesn't get me...no crime there...i love Clapton...but,many hate his work--no problem...i'm still permitted to listen--maybe i'm wrong on overrated--perhaps overrated to me in the context of people i listen to--i do like Jazz is Dead alot & Herring does a nice job...but we just hear it differently as the people who hate Clapton hear it as bad & i love it----i can't provide a logical reason since it's more emotion than reason when it comes to these things--no bad feelings to anyone who differs--

I have to disagree.

Bobby has always been known as a lousy guitarist.

I don't think he is worse than lousy.

I think he is rated properly.

okay, eric clapton is overated. but in no way is page. He played guitar with a bow, and is in my opinion the 2nd best guitarist behind hendrix. Just my opinion

oh, i think that angus young is overated. so is pete townsend.

Every guitarist that has ever played. Completely over-rated.

Clapton - over 40 years of being at the top of the game. Still selling out arenas with fans all over the world. Has hardly accomplished anything. so many fans and albums sold that must mean he has been misjudged all these years.

Page - Only wrote the classic rock text book and changed the way albums were made and accepted.

Eddie Van Halen - saved guitar from keyboard hell and had people picking up guitars every where.

How can anyone actually think these guys are any good?
