To make a long story short, I am at something of a loss. My stepfather passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly last night. I am at my mothers with my sister trying to help her out with all sorts of tasks, trying to help her cope. Anyway, my mother made one request of me that has me stuck at the moment and I beleive some of you kind folks here can help me out.

My stepfather (who was a passionate music fan, guitar player and fan of the ABB who saw them at the Fillmore East way back when) was of Irish decent and had a liking for tradishional Irish music. My mother asked if I would be able to come up with a Celtic Irish farewell type song to be played at the services this weekend. Can anyone here help me out with some recommendations? I am lacking in any knowledge of traditional Irish music, outside of a couple of Garcia/Grisman tunes I am a total loss.

Thanks in advance, I truly appreciate any help I can get.

Peace.

Sorry about the loss Larry. Hope this is a bit of help. Connie has a few CDs out and I'm sure her songs are downloadable from one of the sites that sell tunes.

Jon, thanks for posting this link. This song is absolutely beautiful and Connie Dover has such a lovely voice.

So sorry about your loss, Larry - prayers for strength and comfort going out to your family.

Try something upbeat by the Clancey Brothers, take the edge off. Sorry for your loss.

Check your local library for the Celtic Woman cd's. I'm sure there is something useful in those.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Check out Eileen Ivers, an awesome violin player. She has an album titled An Nollaig-An Irish Christmas. Track#4 is titled The Time Is Approaching, a beautiful melody. Or as TanDan suggested ,Danny Boy. Eva Cassidy recorded a beautiful version.

Thanks so much for all the thoughtful suggestions. I've compiled a list and will be headed out to the music stores tonight. I truly appreciate all the help, thanks again.
