NEW YORK (AP) — Spinal Tap is back, and this time the band wants to help save the world from global warming.

The mock heavy metal group immortalized in the 1984 mockumentary, "This is Spinal Tap," will reunite for a performance at Wembley Stadium in London as part of the Live Earth concerts scheduled worldwide for July 7.

The original members of Spinal Tap will be there: guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), singer David St. Hubbins ( Michael McKean) and bassist Derek Smalls ( Harry Shearer). Rob Reiner, who both directed "This is Spinal Tap" and played the fake documentarian Marty DeBergi in the film, will also be in attendance.

A new 15-minute film directed by Reiner on the band's reunion will also play at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Wednesday. The slate for the opening gala, to be hosted by Al Gore, was previously announced, excepting the Reiner short.

The festival is to open with a showing of several global warming-themed short films produced by the SOS (Save Our Selves) campaign. SOS is also putting on the Live Earth concerts, to be held across seven continents.

Reiner spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday to explain the reunion of Spinal Tap — a band always known more as a parody of rock `n roll excess than environmental awareness.

"They're not that environmentally conscious, but they've heard of global warming," said Reiner, whose other films include "When Harry Met Sally" and "Stand By Me." "Nigel thought it was just because he was wearing too much clothing — that if he just took his jacket off it would be cooler."

Spinal Tap has reunited several times since the film, but hasn't for a number of years. For the band — whose last album was 1992's "Break like the Wind" — the occasion warranted a new single: "Warmer Than Hell."

Reiner provided a sneak peak at the lyrics: "The devil went to Devon, it felt like the fourth degree/ He said, `Is it hot in here, or is it only me?'"

The director said the new short film explains what the band has been doing with their lives lately. Nigel has been raising miniature horses to race, but can't find jockeys small enough to ride them; David is now a hip-hop producer who also runs a colonic clinic; and Derek is in rehab for addiction to the Internet.

Reiner, 60, has for over 20 years worked with the National Resources Defense Council, an environmental action organization. Though the Spinal Tap reunion will be a lot of laughs, he hopes the SOS short films program and the Live Earth concerts have a substantial effect.

"What I think is going to be nice about this whole effort is there will be marching orders for people," said Reiner. "Not only from a personal standpoint of what individuals can do in their lives, but a macro perspective with respect to the public sector and government."

Nigel: ...'its a musical trilogy I'm working on in D minor which is the saddest of all keys I find. People weep instantly when they hear it and I don't know why'...

...'you know, just simple lines intertwining - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach and its sort of in between those. Its like a Mach piece'.

Marty: 'What do you call this?'

Nigel: 'Well this piece is called "Lick My Lovepump"...

One of my favorite shows as a stagehand was working the Tap tour for Break Like The Wind. Most shows start with loading in the rigging and motors, but not Tap. When the door was opened on the first truck, the production manager made all the hands carefully remove two very large cases. The two cases filled the rear four feet of truck space. These were placed at center stage and the hands were ordered to open the case and remove the contents. The contents? Another case. Like Russian nesting dolls, inside it was another case. After five or so layers of cases, the hands removed the smallest road case you can possibly make. With much fanfare, these two cases were placed down center and then were opened to reveal the treasured contents. One guitar pick in each case. A gag for the hands! No tour does that except Spinal Tap.
The show itself was a blast because they were in Nashville. Bela Fleck and Vassar Clements sat in with Tap and the audience was filled with touring folks, players and techs alike, all of whom had seen the movie countless times on a bus. The parody was played out even to the opening act which was Run C&W, who played sweet soul music from the 60's and 70's the God intended it, bluegrass style. (Check out one of Run C&W's albums from the 90's: "Into The Twangy First Century" or "Row vs. Wade". If you can find a copy of Row vs. Wade, there is a picture in the liner of Run and Tap together on the old Starwood stage."
And the rock and roll topper for this show......well, there were two.
One, Tap's actual drummer had broken his foot several days earlier, but played the show.
Two, 2/3 of the crew was detained by the local constabulary for "smoking" on the hillside. Intervention by Tap's production manager and the facility management got the crew released in time for laod out and no charges were filed, although some good vibes were squashed.
A fun time was had by all.

My favorite movie of all time....and the original inspiration for The Vaylorettes....only we don't have to worry about trying to keep a drummer!

Great, great movie. With all of the other reuinited bands hitting the road it only makes sense that Spinal Tap would, too (and hopefully make another movie of the whole experience)!

Anybody remember their Sportscenter commercial? David St. Hubbins claimed that he wrote the "Da da da, da da da" theme song. Then broke into a song about curling!

The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read

My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo

Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

I met her on Monday, twas my lucky bun day
You know what I mean
I love her each weekday, each velvety cheek day
You know what I mean

My love gun's loaded and she's in my sights
Big game is waiting there inside her tights, yeah

Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about mud flaps, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

My favorite part of the movie is them trying to find the stage. Anyone ever go through a wrong door at a big venue? It's kinda like that scene.

about the short film:

But another surprise, a long short from Rob Reiner featuring a reunited Spinal Tap, was hilarious and well-received. The faux rock group has agreed to play at one of the Live Earth shows, for real.

In his new film, Reiner — returning as Spinal Tap’s documentarian from 25 years ago — catches up with Michael McKean’s character David St. Hubbins, now running a hip-hop management company in the back of a colonic irrigation clinic; Harry Shearer’s Derek, who’s in rehab for Internet addiction; and Chris Guest’s Nigel, raising miniature ponies.

My favorite exchange: When the group explains to Reiner — who wonders where heavy metal fans are today — that it’s very popular “among detainees” aka prisoners in places like Guantanamo Bay who are played it night and day, often very loudly.

“Aren’t you worried that it’s really being used for torture?” Reiner asks.

I’m assuming the Spinal Tap film will be shown somewhere on July 7, but since the Live Earth people don’t return phone calls, we’ll have to see.
