WSB TV in Atl. reported law inforcement set up a roadblock in Arcade, Georgia to prevent "problems" at the Widespread Panic three day run in nearby Athens. What that means is that they would really like to bust some" hippies". It was a multi agency effort and they even brought in corrections officers to make sure they had enough force to deal with what they apparently see as a menace to
society. As of this writing they had made seven arrests and only one was attending the concert. After hearing about DEA agents dragging people out of the crowd at Wanee for smoking a joint and now this I wonder why these officers are so concerned with
a few people getting high at a rock concert.I believe it is politically motivated. If you look like a free spirited throwback to the sixties and have the nerve to break the law it is their chance to get one of "them". This is a divided country. Just look at the last two Presidential elections. I had five Kerry signs stolen from my yard during the last campaign. These thieves felt empowered to break the law because I had the nerve to be a liberal in a consertive area. Now imagine you are a talk show loving liberal hating police officer and you know a group of the "enemy" are coming to town and some of them will be breaking the law. All I can say is be careful. Remember the officers are just doing their job. If you want to move the country back to the center (or left like me !) then register and vote. Peace and Democracy have to be earned. Get involved.

These license checkpoints have passed consitutional muster w/ our Supreme Court. So long as they use some objective criteria, like checking every 3d car, it is legally permissible to have these non-probable cause stops. And, if they use drug sniffing dogs there, and the dog "alerts" to the presence of drugs, a search of the vehicle is then legally justified. America was once the land of the free. What happened?

"After hearing about DEA agents dragging people out of the crowd at Wanee for smoking a joint"

Where did that come from? Never heard that. We had 1 person post about getting busted for smoking pot inside the grounds by local police. The security at Wanee was minimal but not non-existant.

I am not justifying the road blocks you post about, but Wanee was far from some police state...

My daughter wanted to put up a goin to Wanee sign in the back window of our van. Of course it was a good idea and I liked it but pop nixed the plan because of the above. Damn shame......

I would think they would have alot more important issues to deal with.

Speaking of the local cops at Wanee. Anyone remember the older white haired sheriff wearing the green suit. It looked to me he has smoked a few along the way. I think he was wanting to get in amunst us and party. He was definitely getting into the music and trying to hide it at the same time.

"America was once the land of the free. What happened."

SOMEONE has always been persecuted. Ask some older black folk if they think "America was once the land of the free."

You've got a good point there. But trading one persecuted class for another does not seem like progress to me. And I bet some younger blacks (or hispanics) would also rightly claim persecution today, such as in driving while black. I grow more libertarian by the day.

My opinion is...unless you got a reason to stop me and search my person and my car, then DON'T eff with me! If I am driving wrecklessly, if I can't walk a straight line, then I am fair game. But the hard facts are....our country is turning more and more into a police state. DON'T DO THIS!! DON'T DO THAT!! If I am minding my own bidness and watching my P's and Q's, what right do the cops have to pull me over and randomly search me or my vehicle?

Careful, Big Dave - you might get stopped for making suggestive hand motions with a bass fretboard, putting a new layer of meaning on "spanking the plank" -

Arcade is not all bad though. I believe they have more liquor stores per capita than in most cities in Georgia. And it was said you could buy beer on Sun there when I was at UGA in the 70's (it's still against the law here, we're one of three states that still prohibit Sun retail store sales of all alcohol).

looks like everyone's moving to canada eh! all they have done up here at concerts for as long as i can remember is tell ya to put it out, or confiiscate it (being a steroid at a concert started to look appealing, i wonder where all that stuff went). especially at shows like ABB ,LS or anything from the good ole days, you would have to arrest the entire crowd. me and a bud went to see deep purple, ted nugent and edgar winter at the amp in TO a few years back and coming out of the bar they had a security guy and a cop at the door into the venue, all were being searched (light pat down, bags, purses and cigerette packs) anything found went into the bin by the cop and off ya went. as we saw this happening he went back into the bar, took out what he had from his smokes, hid it a little better and in we went. the entire place was lit up and not surprisingly, we didn't see one incident other than the usual drunken idiots. smoke em if ya got em!

Wow, there's another one of us? During election time we're the lone liberal in a neighborhood of really uptight people judging by their signs. They keep inviting me to the neighborhood ladies group but they're not going to trick me that easily.....I know it's just a trap!

i agree with "leftyblues" i vote every election, and every election i find myself voting for who i believe is the less of 2 evils. call me cynical, but corporate america is never gonna allow any one on the ballot that is not in their pocket. the 2 party system needs some serious competition, but, mainstream media will discredit anyone who tries. the internet is our oppurtunity to educate ourselves in a new and independent forum, free from spin and brainwashing.
