Okay, the plans are unveiled. RedRider will post the drawings of the proposed fence shortly. The only thing that will be different from the drawings are no notes on the fence.....they could be easily pried loose and stolen and no names on the brick work. And speaking of brick work....that is the main expense of the fence. A nice fence could be built for less, but as I've said all along, this one is elegant and fan friendly.

The proposed fundraising goal is $30,000 which will include the cost of the fence and money put in trust for weekly maintainance. Here are some of the ways that are in place right now to begin the fundraising.

First there are going to be four levels of participation instead of the three previsouly discussed for names to be listed on the wall in the middle of the semi-circular stairways. Bronze will be for contributions of at least $250, silver for $500, gold for $1,000 and platinum for $2,500 and up. I spoke with Candace and ABB Cookbook Supporters will be in the platinum catagory. Without all of your support and enthusiasm, there wouldn't be this fund raising effort for the fence today. You've all deserved this place of honor.

Also, you don't have to send in your money all at once....it will take at least 10 months to a year to get the fence built and the wall of honor ready to be ordered. (It will be in granite rather than bronze or marble because it
will allow for more names to be added at a later date.) Records will be kept of each contributor and as each donation is made, it will be listed individually, which will enable those of you who want a place on the memorial to achieve that goal for small donations each month. And speaking of donations, please let me reiterate....these are NOT tax deductible. Because this fund is for a specific purpose rather than a long term ongoing one, the expense to make it a non-profit is prohitibive. And all donations will be kept private and confidential.

For those who wish to just make a donation an incentive has been provided in the form of my personal cookbook. This is the book I did last year separate from Come On In My Kitchen Vol. 1 and it contains recipes of dishes I've served to the different musicians who have recorded or worked here. The first 30 people to contribute $50 or more will get a free copy. Some of the people who have eaten the dishes cooked from these recipes include: Gregg Allman, Bonnie Bramlett, Oteil Burbridge, Jimmy Hall, Col. Bruce Hampton, Jimmy Herring, Johnny Jenkins, Chuck Leavell, Steve Mores, Lee Roy Parnell, Jack Pearson, Billy Joe Shaver, Jeff Sipe, Butch Trucks and Derek Trucks to name a very few of those listed in the book.

A limited edition of an original t-shirt is being discussed as is a limited edition of numbered prints containing the artwork of the t-shirt. It will be an officially sanctioned shirt by the members of the family.

There are other people who are currently working on another fundraising project that will be announced later. It will also be approved by the family when it's ready.

We can get this fence built....my dad always said it's easier to find a million men with $1 than it is to find one man with a million dollars. It won't take much if a lot of us come together to contribute what we can or adopt the project with a monthly contribution of whatever we are able to spare. This is an enduring part of the Allman Brothers legacy that you have the chance to become part of and it will be a true gift of appreciation for the music created by both Duane and Berry.

Donations can be sent to:

Allman-Oakley Fence Fund
248 Tom Hill Sr. Blvd. # 120 (or PMB 120)
Macon, Georgia 31210

This is not a P.O. box but rather at a private mail box in a business closest to where Candace lives so please don't use P.O. in the address.

I've already sent in my first donation.....I hope you all will want to join us in this project....as I said before....we CAN make this happen!

Excellant move to be able to donate in portions. It'll definetly enable folks like me in ultra low income bracket to still donate to the project.

The more I got to thinking about it, the more it makes sense for someone to approach the HTN people to see if they'll write something about this cause in their next issue.....or if they want to wait until more things are finalized, if they would be willing to mention it on their website. Would anyone be willing to approach them with this request? Just seems like the natural progression of this project.....also, would anyone be willing to approach GABBA to see if they'll send the information about donations out in their news letter? That's the next logical step I think!

HTN put a feature on their website where you could contribute to the Bill Ector Medical Fund online with your credit card. Maybe they could do that for this? Or maybe it could be done on this site? Anything to make it easy for spontaneous giving would help.

I hope that the folks in charge here could find it in their hearts to top this thread.

I can't think of any topic that is more deserving.

Yes that would be ideal wouldn't it? However, I have a feeling that probably won't happen.

Somebody was trying to sell me some Vaylorine at the Beacon but I could tell by looking that it was bogus (for one thing, there was not a feather or sequin anywhere in sight!)

The nerve of some people. It's a good thing you didn't buy it Deb cuz there's no tellin' what the fake stuff is made of. Ann, looks like the Pussycat Dolls are at it again.

BigAnn, when the short-lived fence was taken down in 1998, Mayor Marshall is quoted in the AJC as saying a donor was willing to pay all costs ( of a fence ) and was just waiting on everyone to agree on a course of action. Was that just wishful thinking at the time? What ever came of that offer?

Best wishes on your project.

I believe who the mayor was speaking of at the time was Phil Walden. I know he offered to pay for a fence around that time but the design was never finalized or agreed upon before he passed. Of course now, that offer is obviously off the table. Most people don't know that Phil is the one person of all who was true to Duane and Berry right up to the end. When no one else offered to help Candace and Buford, Phil did. I have great respect for him for that.

Thank you to all who have said kind things about me but really, this isn't my project...it's OUR project and it's not going to be built without the support of everyone. All I'm doing is conveying information and ideas of how we can make it happen. When this fence is built, it will be a gift from you ALL to Duane and Berry.

Folks don't forget to really be able to see the details and beauty in these drawings you need to right click and save the picture to your computer & then enlarge the image with the magnifying glass thingy. It really does makes a world of difference.....
