bob1954 raised a very interesting question in another thread, so interesting I thought it deserved it's own thread:

Here's a tougher question: If you had to replace both Warren and Derek with 2 living guitar players who have never been in the band before who would they be? I'll have to think on that before I can answer.

Personally, I would go with Luther Dickinson and Eric Clapton.

I don't know how I feel about these kind of questions. But I will look at it as a great way to promote and express my feelings for Tinsley Ellis. cleaneduphippy and reneed also agreed with the Tinsley pick in the other thread.

I don't know who the other player would be. Eric Clapton is a great player, but he doesn't belong in this band. It would be cool to see him guest, but I would never wish for him to be a member.

Sonny Landreth and Carlos Santana . . . well, why not?

Even though Santana is one of my favorites, I'm not sure he'd be a good fit with the ABB. For one thing his strength is Latin influenced rock, not the blues roots that the ABB sound is built on. For another, I think the strength of the ABB is that they are a band of equals. That would be hard to maintain with a "franchise player" like Santana or Clapton.

first,i'd rather not "replace" anyone--i love these 2 guitarists--but,any band needs a good fit--not neccessarily the best(whatever that means??!!),but solid players who can swing & groove as part of the ABB & it's tradition....so some of the names here are a prefect fit & others are great, but not a direct fit...now we are blessed to have DEREK & WARREN who are both--the perfect fit & the "best"....so,i'd want Devon Allman & Jack Pearson, believing that they fit & would play off each other very well---if Devon wasn't interested,i'd want Lefty Collins for fit &,again,he'd do well with Jack!.............but i sure hope it stays this way for a long time....

Fair enough. My main reason for naming him is that I'd like to hear what Santana could do on the instrumentals, Lizzy, Jessica, Egypt, MJ, etc. Just like I'd like to hear what Derek could do on tunes like Europa, Angel of Sunlight, Song of the Wind, etc.

I caught a piece of hearsay in a thread a couple of months ago . . . something about Carlos saying he wanted to work with Derek. Here's hoping that happens.

Oh, and by the way, Santana's "rock" is what interests me the least . . . Give me Caravanserai, Illuminations, Love, Devotion, Surrender, etc. That's the Santana I'd like to hear on Liz Reed.

I think if you are going to pick 2 brand new guys, at least one of them should be a pretty good slide player. Also, lets hope we don't NEED to do this... I am VERY happy with the guys we got...

my picks...

Robben Ford and Larry Campbell
or
Steve Kimock and Marc Ford
or
Luther Dickinson and John Scofield

I brought my comments over from the other thread, hope y'all don't mind.

quote:
I'm going to cheat on this one, with one who has been in the band, and one who hasn't.

Jack Pearson with Lee Roy Parnell

Other than that.

Tinsley Ellis and Sonny Landreth.

The way I look at is that Lee Roy Parnell and Tinsley Ellis can do the things that Warren does, which is playing good southern blues/rock guitar with slide ability, good songwriting abilities, good vocalist, ect.

Replacing Derek is much more difficult to replace has the MAIN thing he brings to the band is WORLD CLASS SLIDE and guitar playing. And unfortunately, the only two slide players I can think of that can play at that level and fit within the ABB are Jack Pearson and Sonny Landreth.

Devon Allman is a good guitarist in his band, but as far at the ABB is concerned, I think at this point in time his main contribution would be his name.

Vince Esquire sure sounded pretty good on the Statesboro, and One Way Out jams he sat in on..Luther Dickinson would be the other one..

CaptSkipper, Duane Allman IS the reason that Lee Roy Parnell became a professional musician.

Nobody forgot Dickey is alive, the question is "...living guitarists never in the band before"

I think Luther Dickinson and Sonny Landreth are good choices.

Or, how about Kenny Wayne Shepherd?? And since we need a slide guitarist - how about Bonnie Raitt??

At this point they cannot be replaced. The entire sound would be changed and the band would have to start from scratch. Of course they could find guitarists who could play the songs but not that could bring it to the level it is currently at. And at this stage of the game, it's not worth trying. I have said before that I think Derek could conceivably be replaced by someone like Jack Pearson but Warren is probably irreplaceable at this point because of the overall leadership he provides.

BTW, I hope once the ABB is done, that Mule and the DTB will add some ABB songs to their epotoire so these songs continue to be heard. (I mean besides Rocking Horse and Soulshine of course)

Doug

i think this is an interesting topic. anything can happen, right? eddiep is on to something.
i don't think e.c. or carlos are a possiblities, but marc ford or larry campbell could be. i agree, i hate to think of warren or derek leaving, either one. of course we overlook the obvious, tommy talton would also fit and be available.

Listening to a bunch of CDs this afternoon, and I thinK that a Lee Roy Parnell/Robbin Ford combo would work on so many levels for the ABB. They could do justice on a lot of classic ABB songs, and in addition bring quite a number of their songs that would work "very well" with the ABB. Hope that Warren/Derek got a long life with the ABB, but if you had to add to a new "front end" to the ABB, don't think you would get better than Lee Roy/Robbin combo, has both could bring so much to the band, beyond just being two great guitar players. Both can sing, both can play, both can write, both know what the ABB is all about. What more could you want.
