I'm not sure of the origins of this blues, but I know it must be at least a semi-old blues tune. I first saw this commercial on the superbowl(I'm not much of a sports fan the other people in my family had it on) but just moments ago I saw the same commercial for Chevy vehicles or whatever, and it started like the DTB version of Chevrolet, and they blend "new" R&B, Country, Rap, and maybe its rock I don't remember into a version of the blues Chevrolet for a Chevy commercial. One part of me says: I'm glad the DTB isn't selling out, the other part of me is saying "This is a DTB song, why the hell are we not hearing Derek's slide and Mike's vocals and the whole rest of the the DTB badassing it? This is mostly just a rant, but I want to know what the rest of yall think.

it is a really old blues tune, taj mahal played it a lot but i know it was written before his time too. The version derek plays is how duane used to do it. Theres a rare studio album out there with duanes version on it.

I think the main reason we aren't hearing the DTB version on the commerical is $$$$. I'm pretty sure it costs less to recreate the tune than to use someone's recorded version.

First off let me say I would have loved to hear dtb in part of the song and Derek's slide singing. As far as the commercial, I think you have to understand what they are advertising for, which is the diversity of there products (vehicles). The song touches on various styles of music through out the commercial just as it touches on all the diffrent vehicles and styles of automobiles that they have to offer. In doing so the company is trying to reach out and portray that they have something to offer for everyone. It a good marketing sceam in my opion, it got my attention. I didnt like the hip hop rap crap or country but I liked the bluesy part. Other people, beleive it or not, might have liked the other styles. Which gives a little something for everyone. At least thats what I think....

For those counting at home, that's two lame versions of dTb songs that have appeared in commercials in the last few years - Coke tried to drinks with "I Wish I Knew" a while ago.

sucks tho, cause i dont like rap in general, so to hear one that is basically a rap cover of dtb's version makes my ears bleed.

Oh come on. It sucks, but she's singing, not rapping. And it's not that similar to the dTb version. She even sings some lyrics that they don't use.

Sorry Marley, but ... they AIN'T DTB songs. Both "Chevrolet" and "I Wish I Knew (How It Feels To Be Free)" are basically standards in the same vein as say ... "Autumn Leaves" is. The DTB's takes are far from the definative versions of either as well IMO. Both are tasteful choices of covers for jazzbos. However, ... while DTB's "I Wish I Knew" is a whole lot better than their "Cheverolet" (which fails to get started again IMO), it pales pretty badly compared to Nina Simone's. Once again IMO. Hey, I like the DTB as much as anybody. They just didn't invent jazz as some here seem to believe.

I know who wrote them. I decided "second time a song covered by the dTb" was awkward and figured fans already know the authors. There ar esongwriting credits on Songlines, you know.
