Well, I was in my glory, but not because of Warren per se (I did see him perform 10 times in the past 3 weeks with the ABB and at Irving Plaza) but because I was there, and it was a very hard ticket to get, and the music was great from start to finish and it was a small venue and the sound was perfect mostly and there was Phil Lesh two feet away from me and John Molo about four feet away.

Larry McCray and Larry Campbell were terrific. McCray really ripped on many of the songs, bringing some great guitar work to the night and he has such a great strong voice. I saw Larry with Clapton and am familiar with his usual great material. He totally added a blues element to last night and I think he did some songs that Pigpen did and I heard a lot of people really appreciated that material being brought into the band. Larry Campbell can also sing well. He did some great lead solos too, though you could tell he wasn't as familiar with all the material. I saw him at the Levon Helm show and he is one talented dude. Only thing was last night he did not play the violin and I love to hear that.

I don't think Warren sang any song solo (or maybe he did sing one) but mostly joined in with Larry C on back up a bunch and Phil sang lead for much of the songs Warren sat in on. Of course Warren added some nice guitar elements to the music. He really didn't take over at any point and just sort of blended well with the rest of the band. It is one of the characteristics about Warren that makes him a great band member. He doesn't take over but plays cooperatively and you can see that he really listens to what others are doing and adds sweet fills when the timing is right. Of course he did some lead work as well, but overall he just blended right in, looking good, and the audience just loved that he showed up to sit in.

Phil did such a great job singing. Phil’s voice sounded sweet and clear and you could actually hear him since the sound was mixed well. I totally just listened to him, which wasn't hard to do since I didn't know the words to most of the songs. (For me, the process of learning some of the GD songs has been very exciting. Some core GD material is starting to become familiar and I love looking up the lyrics to the songs later as Robert Hunter is such a talented lyric writer. Of course I knew the Weight, Rider and a few others.) It was so nice to see Phil looking so great and strong and he really has that bass work down. LOL. He and Molo are another great rhythm section (like the Mule and the ABB). The night before Molo had food poisoning so another person sat in on drums and I heard that threw the band off some which you would expect since the drums are the heart of any band. I danced a lot last night so you know they were sounding good. And mostly, they sounded very good during the transitions and the deconstructed jams, though sometimes you could tell they hadn’t played together forever. The keyboard player, Steve Molitz, is the keyboard player for Particle and last night they played this one Particle instrumental (Launchpad) that totally rocked me out. It sounded like an early 60’s jam, with maybe some Dick Dale elements, but very tasteful and grounded. That key player rocked all night and if Particle was less instrumentally oriented, I probably would enjoy them as a band too. The other person who was there who sang back up on a number of songs was a woman named Christina. She sounded nice when you could hear her. I thought she was underutilized, with her microphone too low in the mix, but she definitely added a nice higher ranged sound to the vocals on songs like the Weight and I Know You Rider.

It was totally worth dragging my behind to work today to be able to see that show last night. The audience was so wonderful. Everybody was just grooving to the music and listening intently and singing all the words to the songs and dancing their behinds off. I was definitely in the minority in terms of knowing the songs and I really felt very grateful to have been sold a ticket to this show.

Phils voice!! here we go again..Phil has sometimes a very funny voice..But hey listen..He never sing sout of tune, but i think its his tone in his voice that some people can get past..But i think he has a decent voice..But i think he was best as a harmony singer in Grateful dead from 66-73..He sang the high part very good and blended fine with jerry and Bobby Weir..
