Maybe these topics about drunken a-holes and being thrown out of the Beacon belong in the Whipping Post, but I don't think these rants'll last too long and I'm just posting here to add to the discussion.
As someone who is very wise and in the know told me this year, "It's the end of the world as we know it" regarding the Allman Brothers Band and the Beacon. This is not to say they won't ever play there again but the change in security, the beer barkers, the attendants (?) in the ladies bathroom, etc. were all really weird.
My beef is that I'm now a big WATER drinker (yeah, one gets real thirtsty in there and since I don't currently imbibe, my H2O is vital). The "official" MSG policy is for the water tenders is to purposely throw out the caps of the water bottles after they make a sale so that if you spill it, which one is likely to do as soon as soon as they get to their seats, put in on the floor to take their coat of and knock it overf, you have to go buy ANOTHER $3.50 bottle.
So, last night was my third show. I considered bringing my own cap but then reconsidered and I bought a big ass bottle of cold water at Penn Station for two bucks and stuck it in the back of my jeans (felt like a frigging iceberg). Had plenty of water for the whole show and didn't spill a drop.
Greedy mo-fo's down to the last drop! If the Madison Square Garden, Time Warner, blah blah blah conglomorate is so thoughtful as to how to squeeze every dime out of their customers, I'd rather not patronize their businesses. Of course, if one wants cable TV in a lot of places and their apartment building doesn't allow satellites, what choice do we have?
Damn.

A lot of places do this, actually. I first saw it in Raleigh six years ago, and it happens at sporting events and non-MSG concert venues too. They say it's so you can't throw the bottle, and it's irritating. I don't think they're counting on making money from people spilling their drinks.

If you think that's annoying, I eagerly await the general-admission floor at the Beacon next year. Ugh.

Time Warner has nothing to do with this.

Comcast is the cable co. I believe.

The Dolans.

I was irked by the no cap policy too and did likewise and smuggled in my own water bottle (how sad is that, sneaking in water?). As you say, my $3.50 water purchased on the 1st night got spilled. Perhaps mgt did not want these capped bottles used as projectiles, and for that I was grateful that the down in front people behind me in Orch had nothing to use to enforce their own desires.

This sounds like new behaviour at the Beacon but I can't remember the last time I was at a show where they did allow caps to be kept on bottles and I've always been told it's due to the throwing factor. (I'm in Midwest - maybe it's been a regional thing so far).
Definitely agree that there is price gouging going on. Wish that people would be allowed to enter these events with a single water even but I guess that defeats the promoters purposes.

They do this at NC State football games too. My solution was to take a extra bottle cap with me in my pocket....

I also had about 10 airplane bottles hidden too.

I asked one of the bartenders about this and she told me to write to MSG about it because it was the basis behind their decision. They're counting on you spilling that water - trust me!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone throw a bottle cap in the 15 year run at the Beacon.

Yeah, General Admission Orchestra at the Beacon.....No way, Jose. These old bones need to sit down once in awhile and NOT in a puddle of sticky beer!

Okay, but that's not what people at other venues have told me.

I totally agree that 3.50 is a rip off, and that no bottle cap is insulting.

I asked why. They said it is much easier to throw a bottle cap if you don't like the show than it is a bottle.

At almost 49 years old, I have never, and will never throw a bottle cap at anyone. Dolan is an a*s if he thinks that is what people at ABB concerts do.

So I stuck to one bottle per show and tried not to hold it against the people selling the water and gave them a tip anyway. But I did resent it each time. I mean really.

You're paying 110 bucks for a ticket, the least you can get is a cap on your water.

Well, I don't know about that, but let's hope that part of the renovation includes the addition of cupholders at every seat. That might save on some spillage...

I had a bottle of water confiscated at one of my shows when I didn't bury it deep enough in my bag. The fuzz found the contraband. After that I put it in my coat pocket. I will not pay $3.50 for a bottle of water. End of story.

There won't be NO seats as I understand it!!! Really looking forward to the crush of 50 something, 40 something, 30 something and 20 somethings some with a beer in each hand, 4 in their belly and one in their pocket, and all those sober folks with the capless water bottles spilling all over the places crushed up against the stage. Whooo hoooo NOT.

I have to stand and dance at a concert but this sure makes the loge and balconies sound good! I think it would be a sin to turn this beautiful theater into a GA free-for-all.

Like I said, I think it's dumb- but don't take it that personally. You've been to enough shows to know that not everybody at any concert is a thoughtful adult.

That'd be nice. I won't count on them doing anything so considerate, but here's hoping.

Honestly, folks, it's not that hard to sneak in a water. We should all just do that.

The concern, I think, is not the bottle cap, but the capped(full) bottle.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not a beer drinker, but did the "old Beacon" sell bottled beer before this year? They probably did, I never noticed. I do recall (of course this belongs in the "too much beer at the Beacon thread but what the hey), sales being cut off after intermission at some point during the past few years.

Nope, Lizzie, the "old Beacon" did not sell bottled beer, only cups. The plastic bottles are rather new on the market and you don't see them many places. If the water bottle spillage theory is correct, then it wouldn't make sense for them to sell beer in bottles; much less spillage with the bottle than a draft beer in a cup.

What's really annoying is that years ago all public facilities used to have drinking fountains - free water! But when bottled water started to become the rage I noticed that all of the drinking fountains started to disappear from MSG, Yankee Stadium and such. I thought that it used to be part of the building code that public facilities HAD to have drinking fountains available...

Hey Lizzie .... thats my sistha... good to seeya here ... Well this was my first experience with the cap thingy.. I thought the girl who served me my water had inadvertently thrown it out by mistake and I walked away wondering ..what a drag now I have to worry about spilling this very precious drink ( as i was extremely warm and thirsty from all that dancing I did prior to show at the JFC party ) until I noticed that no one had a cap... I thought about that and figured it was from unruly people throwing them... but the money factor$$$$$$$$$ seems almost like the answer.... It's really to bad

A possble solution.. A person standing next to me on 4/2 pulled a bottle cap out of her purse and put it on the bottle that she had just bought.

Problem solved
