If you do a search in the archived anything goes there have been a number of threads about this, almost every year on Aug. 9. I know I've written in a few of them, and you will probably get alot of nice info for your book.

We at at the Allman Brother's concert at Jones' Beach when we got the word. It put a bittersweet twist on the night, but the Brothers turned it into a fine evening of music. IT is what started the Blue Skies in to Franklyn Tower segue, and also what brought the deahheads to Brothers show.
And also what makes deadhead fans post "Dead Issues" here ...Every Day!

I was working as a clerk on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange at the time. The news broke across the ticker and thats all anyone talked about for the rest of the day. Well, at least around me that was the case. I was never too crazy about the Dead playing football stadiums at all. I just don't feel that they lend themselves to concerts very well. By August of 1995, the demand for Dead tickets was so high that the band was forced to play places like Soldier Field. I did find it strange that Chicago would be the site of Jerry's last show with the Dead. I didn't go to that show for the reasons I stated above. Nevertheless, upon learning of his death I realized that I would never get another chance. So looking back, I regret not going to that last show at Soldier Field.

I'm 40 years old so I don't remember the deaths of Duane, Berry, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin. For me, the deaths of John Bonham and Jerry Garcia have stood out because I was at a point in my life where I could go see Led Zeppelin and the Dead. I never got to see Led Zep but at least I got a few Dead shows in. I'm thankful for that and the music that Jerry gave us during the course of his life.

I was bummed like so many others...... felt that a part of my youth had left with him even though I was 37 years old at the time.Jerry was a big part o fmany youthful memories,as he provided much of the soundtrack to what was going on.

Thanks for the music Jerry!

He's gone...........

I’ll never forget the day I heard that Duane had died. I was sleeping in my room in Gainesville, Florida, when a girl I knew came in and sat on the side of my bed. She said she’d just heard that Duane Allman had been killed in a motorcycle accident. I bolted up and we hoofed down to the Zipmart and bought a newspaper. I started frantically leafing through it when up in the corner of about page seven I saw a picture of Duane. I could make out the headline but I couldn’t see through the tears to read the article. I knew what was in it and it broke my heart.

Still does.

I was on Newbury Street in Boston @ the Tower Records. Someone had come in and said Jerry had passed. We went across the street to a bar, saw it on the news. We went back to Tower Records and put together a candle light vigil on the sidewalk. This pic made it into People magazine. I can try and locate the pic.

I remember that morning because I had just gotten off a 12 hour over night shift at the manufacturing plant I worked at during the summers of college. It was surreal to be so sleep deprived and then get the news. I had just seen them for the first time in DC a month earlier, so I was still in the midst of a Dead love affair. The first thing I did was call my dad at work, which in retrospect was a little weird...he was not really a fan, but did consider the version of Brokedown Palace off of Dead Set amongst his favorites. Anyhow turned on the local classic rock station who was playing nothing but Dead, sparked one....and then went to sleep.

The other thing I really remember is being pretty pissed off when my dad died a year later and thinking a guy like Jerry who completely abused his body was given 53 years and my dad who was as straight as they come left at 51. Irrational? Perhaps, but was the connection I made at the time.

I was at the car wash having my company truck cleaned and was watching cable news in the lobby. My main reaction was shock and disbelief. I was never a huge Dead fan, aside from their radio hits, but I still felt a real sense of loss. Jerry was a real counter culture hero.

I was at work around 5:30 AM and heard it on the radio. I kept on working with tears rolling down my face,a coworker asked me "whats wrong" I told him "I just lost a good friend" I have 288 dead shows under my belt and still miss Jerry. To make it worse my dad passed away that night!
Peace to my Dad and Jerry!

I was at that show, too... I remember it being rather somber... and also I remember intro into Blue Sky with Dickey tipping his hat to Jerry

I was outside playing ball with my little boy. My husband was watching from the window . At some point the cop who lived next door to us, stuck his head out and yelled to me something like "Hey your leader finally OD'd." I looked at him and said "What are you talking about?" Smirking, he said Jerry Garcia was dead .... I looked at my husband at the second floor window and just saw his lips mouth .. "I'm sorry I couldnt be the one to tell you." Cried my eyes out

I'll never forget hearing the news...i was 18, working in my friends fathers sub shop in falmouth mass-i heard it on the radio in the kitchen. I was stunned, i couldnt believe it. The ironic thing was my friend recieved our tickets for the fall run @ the boston garden in the mail the next day

the night he died we all gathered @ a local beach and hugged and cried and tried to comprehend what had happened. we were all so young having just graduated high school that spring, (2 days after graduation we were groovin in highgate, vt.)but we were old enough to understand that there was something magical about what jerry brought to the table
miss ya jerry!

I almost thought this was another Dead related topic.

Going over to the Dead sites to read about the ABB now.
