Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. They are engines of change, windows on the world, (as a poet said) lighthouses erected in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.
--Barbara W. Tuchman

Always have piles of books and I usually don't have too much trouble getting rid of them unless I've been on a Doritoes binge. You think your group would appreciate books with little orange fingerprints on most of the pages Hop?

Hey now Red -

The issue is not getting rid of the piles of books, the idea is to use them to get free books going forward! And this group is new to me -- I just joined yesterday -- so I don't feel right calling them "my" group. Yet.

But I do recognize a good idea when I see one!

Well, before 9/11 I pretty much read a book a week, unless it was real thick and then it took maybe 3-4 weeks, since I only get to read on the train. Then after 9/11 I just didn't have the attention span to read any more. It seemed such a passive activity. So I didn't read many books throughout 2002, 03, 04, 05. Finally, in the past year or so I have been able to get back to about a book every 2-3 weeks. I love to read.

Now I'm almost finished with Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs and am looking forward to reading Skydog next.

For years, 1 book per week used to be my quota.

The last couple of years it may be 2 books a month and a ton of magazines.

Hey ! Thanks for that info Hop ! I try to read a book a week but it probably comes closer to a couple a month. Just finished Janis Joplin:Burued Alive in the Blues by Myra Friedman (her publicist). Very good book but, obviously, so sad. Can't believe it took so many years to read something on Janis. About to embark on Rocks Scully's account of his years with the Dead. Waiting on it to arrive from Amazon. Ordered the Jefferson Airplane bio too. Love non-fiction.

I've been a member of the Paperback Book Swap for about a year and a half, I guess. I'm not really an active participant, as just about all I read comes from the public library, but I did list a number of paperbacks early on, and they've all been claimed. I haven't cashed in any of my credits yet, although I do check occasionally to see if some obscure title (usually a fantasy novel) that interests me is listed by any members. No luck so far, but it is a great service for more popular/current paperbacks.

Good luck with it.
