I know the title of this topic sounds very stupid..I dont compare guitar players..Each one of my heroes have their personal style so its no use to compare..But on my job this thursday on our lunch break me and a guy im working with started talking about guitar players and Duane is one of his favourites and mine too.But my all time favourite is Captain trips,Jerry Garcia!! As i think many of you know by now..Ive been playing guitar for many years and he asked me who is the best?so hard to answer that question.Who is the better guitar slinger?Jerry or Duane? I think they had some things in common..They both liked to play loooong solos and improvise, but Duane was more blues based and Jerry more Folk and bluegrass based..But Jerry could also play the blues very good..I know this is a silly topic but who do you folks is the best?its a matter of taste..I knoe its stupid to compare because they had 2 different styles.. but in terms of Technuiqe,Chords and solos and the way they jammed etc etc..who was best he asked me..my answers is i like both but Jerry is more my up of tea.. what do you folks say??

Cheers..

While I personally like Duane Allman's playing more than Jerry Garcia's I wouldn't say one was better than the other. Both of them took the music they grew up listening to and playing and created their own style of music and playing from those sources. Trying to say which is one is best, is pointless as it really comes down to what you the listener likes and enjoys. And truth is, both Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia and many, many other players have provided me, and you and all the rest reading this topic, many hours of music enjoyment. Remember music is not a competition, but about sharing. Maybe a better title could have been "Comparing the playing styles of Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia". Remember Duane's slide work echoed many great blues harmonica players and jazz horn players. Jerry on the other hand was a banjo player who's first ambition was to play with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. Needless to say, a lot of the "rolling sound" of the Dead comes from Jerry playing "banjo licks" on the guitar.

It seems to me you've answered your own question. As far as guitar it is a matter of taste. In other aspects of the game, Jerry probably surpassed Duane. In singing, songwriting, repertoire, multi-instramentalism, and probably bandleading, Jerry was better. However, in terms of guitar playing, the biggest difference was tone. IMO Duane had the classic, to-die-for rock tone of all time. Jerry on the other hand , especially later on in his career, had a guitar tone that for me was akin to finger nails on a chalkboard. That piercing, treble heavy, harsh, "bell like" tone was absolutely horrible. Again thats my opinion.

Hey allmanfromsweden, what's with Duane and Jerry? I thought you'd be more into Yngwie and Eurometal? Lol!

You know what I say:
1. Duane is far better than Jerry
2. Please, can't you stop starting these same old threads?!

Last October 18 you just started the following thread:
"im sorry..another Dead thread..Jerry vs Duane"
http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=v iewthread&tid=51584#pid

Compare that thread title to this thread's title.
And now let me quote myself from that thread:
quote:
Look, these Grateful Dead threads really are getting annoying.

Especially how this thread title is worded.

Duane all the way.
Absolutely.
Not even close.

Sometimes Jerry was okay, but he was no Bob Weir.

I'm with Peter, fanfromsweden.

What is your point? You ask the same questions over and over. You don't want to know what we think, because you already know what we think. Your questions have been answered.

It's getting to the point, where it looks like you want to mention Jerry Garcia's name on ANY given topic(or the Dead), on any chance you get. Like you have an itch, and it's at the tip of your tongue all day.....

No apologies needed for it, but is that your mojo? To mostly discuss the Grateful Dead, & Jerry Garcia?

I swear in one of the last Dead posts I looked over here, a Dead fan was actually comparing Garcia's noodling, flights of truckin' to the approaches of Ornette & Coltrane.

Ridiculous.

I've probably mentioned this before, but at last years Wanee some groovy chick told me Warren was the next Jerry Garcia. I'll leave it at that.

I agree with Peter. Enough is enough.

No...."Eight is enough"

Duane would have "smoked" Jerry's ass of the stage..although I have no prob with Jerry....

Plus..Duane had more fingers.

Finsky, Ornette Coleman must have liked Jerry's playing since he played with the Dead and asked Jerry to play on one of his albums. Other great saxophonists like David Murray and Branford Marsalis also played with the Dead. In addition,Bruce Hornsby who is also a great musician also played with the Dead for more than a year and greatly respected Mr. Garcia. I think many great musicians respected his ability. As to who is better Duane or Jerry that is simply a matter of personal taste. I'm sure Duane thought Jerry was a good muician since he played with Jerry a few times himself.

These types of threads are just silly. Both were great in their own way. Like a real good apple or a real good orange if you know what I mean. Let's celebrate the magic that these incredible musicians have left us and be thankful that they both graced the planet with their presence.

I agree...LOL !..."How silly" is it to state your opinion on two different musicians and then ask someone else to state their own........and then you have the effin' nerve to say you liked Jerry's playing better. What are trying to do..start World War III..or is it 4 ?

I'm totaly shocked and apalled....

How dare you allmanfanfromsweden...how could you?

I love 'em both but as a technician I'm sure Duane was better. The Dead is my favorite group too so I'm not biased to Duane. I do love Jerry's style a great deal though. They're both great guitar players.

What does Ornette requesting Garcia to play on his album have to do with his IDEAS and his musical approach?

I NEVER said Ornette Coleman dismissed Jerry Garcia. I don't have a clue about that, nor do I care. My statement is more in line with what some people are saying in this forum.
