My wife showed me LuLu singing on American Idol. Can't believe how great she looked for 60 years old. Taken great care of herself it seems.

I surfed youtube and came up with this gem.

To Sir with Love on American Idol. I say that they declare her the winner.

Where did this woman disappear for 30-40 years? Maybe the UK has been keeping her secret. I read that she charted in the UK in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. is that true? if so what are all these songs?

Lulu is a great vocalist and has had many hits and maintained her career since she was in her teen's but I think that aside from the To Sir With Love thing she hasn't been heard much in the states. But if you look at the British charts she's had many hits over the years. So she's never really disappeared - she's just focused her career on her home county. Factiod - she was married to one of the BeeGee's at one time (one of the twins).

For my money, Jeff Beck is the most interesting and accomplished electric guitarist alive. Lulu sounds fantastic on this cut, and what a sax break.

I wonder why none of these songs hit North America.

UK keeping her to themselves. Just like Sam Brown. If not for Pink Floyd and George Harrison, we would never see her.

She concluded the British blues segment with a deeply felt "Drown in My Own Tears". Very special. Never thought that she had the interest or capability. She also showed up on the recent PBS British pop special.

Are you serious ? Are you saying for a woman of her age and current voice that she sounds good .

That was terrible.

I love the movie and the song , but she clearly doesn't have what it takes to do that song anymore. She "talked" her way thru most of the song with the exception of the chorus which she couldn't handle as well.

I was also a big fan of “To Sir with Love” and when I saw her on Idol (Yes I admit that I watch it) I wondered where she was all these years so I looked her up on Wikipedia….

Interesting

lulu's recordings have been all over the map stylistically. from rock to pop to soul to dance to show tunes she is definetly a singer's singer. i wished she would have recorded again in muscle shoals - her "new routes" lp has some excellent material (not to mention some fine playing by duane).

and for a little lulu trivia:

james dewar (center back row) of robin trower fame started out in lulu's band lulu and the luvvers.

lulu was also the co-writer of the tina turner hit "i don't wanna fight" that was featured in the movie "what's love got to do with it?".

I agree with you, mtnjam67. I wasn't overly impressed with Lulu's thing with Jeff Beck. She's a good sport for taking on a deep blues, but it just didn't feel right. Jeff I like to see anytime!

But Lulu plain ruined "To Sir with Love"! She couldn't sing a line straight! Here is a very sweet, sappy song that I can get nostalgic about. Its melody is very straightforward and charming, and the chords and arrangement of each verse make it soar upward and float back quite naturally, without getting all hysterical.

Here Lulu comes on this show, so she feels she has to American Idol-ize her phrasing--dragging the time out, or "talking" it, like mtnjam puts it; adding flourishes of melisma where a simple held note would be nice once in a while; and reaching for other overwrought dramatic effects, which she wasn't really hitting. And the Idol arranger couldn't let the song be without injecting that cheap effect of jacking the key up a step before the last verse.
