G'day -

Last night after seeing the Bulls beat the Celtics at The United Centre I went to The House of The Blues to catch Lefty and band.

ie Lefty Collins and the No Mercy Band - http://www.lcnomercyband.com/

I walked in 1/2 way through a set, caught 2 and a 1/2 sets all up.

Man what another great night of blues - what a band.

Lefty on Gibson (although he did sneak in a bit of tele work later on during a song)
JP on Fender, Pete on bass and Angel on drums.

Awesome guitar tones - it was really nice to hear the Gibson and Fender sounds up there. That was the first thing that struck me sound wise. The drumming was in the pocket the whole night and Pete's bass playing blew me away.

I was listening for Allman inspired sounds in the music and the two things that stood out to me was the harmony's that Lefty and JP went into a few times but the main one that stood out for the gig was how tasteful a player Lefty is - great tone and great note choice - absolute killer.

Needless to say, from the get go - I was right into it.

I didn't introduce myself when they went to break cause I was going to yell out "whipping post" later on in a set - but in the next set Lefty said '36 years ago today - my favourite album of all time was released', at which point I let out a yell and Lefty quickly identified - 'There is an Australian Brother in the house' looking over at me, I gave him the thumbs up and he said 'let your soul shine is in the house' - classic.

and with that they went into one of my all time favorite ABB tunes, Mountain Jam.

HOLY CRAP - I have never heard anyone play Mountain Jam live - those dudes can all play to say the least - it was AWESOME. Both Lefty and JP are great guitar players - their solos were really cool - Lefty pulled out the slide too. Killer.

I took a fair few photos during the night - also - my camera takes video - I snuck in a couple of small vid's of some of Lefty's handiwork - the lighting wasn't great for it and the sound will be distorted but the playing is smokin' - if it's cool with Lefty I'll put the video stuff up on my site for people to download when I get back to Aus. The files will be large but there was some killer playing that I captured - it'd be cool to be able to share it. I'll leave that up to Lefty though.

Mountain Jam was only the beginning - knowing there was a member from Hittin' the Note in the house and the band being the band they are - they went into more ABB. Highlights were No Angel and also Done Somebody Wrong - oh, plus and instrumental that I can never remember the name of.

Lefty was kind enough to introduce me to the band - they are cool dudes. Cool dudes who can play their axes off!!

I forgot to buy a cd off them - but I will catch up with them in NY and get one then.

The gig went faster than just about any other gig I've seen in my life - I didn't want them to stop. It got me VERY EXCITED about seeing the ABB - which is now only 15 days away.

So to EVERYONE from Hittin' the Note - if you've seen Lefty's band before, you know you'll go see them again - and to everyone else - make sure you check them out when you get the chance - anyone into the blues/the ABB is going to love it.

Eat a Peach,

Nick.

LetYourSoulShine, thanks for the review. Lefty and the band did MJ at GABBAfest in October of 2006 and my description of it was "other worldly." The boys can definately PLAY!!!
