Just setting up this thread in case anyone is attending the Ratdog show tonight at the Beacon. Let us know what the experience was like with the new ownership. Did they allow dancing in the ailses? Did they turn their backs on smoking? Did they allow you to visit friends in other parts of the theatre? Any information would be welcome as many of us are curious about whether the atmosphere will be different at our favorite venue.

Thanks.

Pete

Yup. Though Thuirsday may not be a good day to get a good feel. Either way, I'll try to add what I can to the info pool. :-)

PS, I hear they are sounding real good.

Oh, but they are.

I just got a call from Sari who's at the Ratdog show with Paulr (the taper).

Here's the lowdown so far (the show hasn't started yet, so I'm sure there will be more to add).

1. NO HEAT. It's cold as hell here, so I'm sure its colder in NYC. It's freezing inside the theatre. This would REALLY torque me if I was there. There is NO excuse for that.

2. Not one familiar face working there.

3. Doors were supposed to open at 6:30, they opened at 6:45. They had 4 lines going in, but ONE PERSON "wanding" everyone. That created quite a backlog I'm told.

4. There is a "stick" person at the door. This person has you open any bag, purse, pocketbook, etc. and they poke in it with a stick. Are they looking for kittens?

5. Paul, of course, brought his taping gear. He got his ticket through Ratdog ticketing and he's in the taper section. ALL mic stands are at eye level, no higher. Gee, that'll make for some nice quality sound tapes, eh?

Anyway, that's the dish so far. Sari might try to call later. The smoking issue hasn't arisen yet as the house lights are still up. She told one of the security guys that they better watch out when the ABB fans get there, 'cause this system won't work when we invade!!

Well this sucks. I know there's always been lots of tapers at the Ratdog shows I've attended - I imagine there are some PO'd people staring dead on into their gear.

LOL - Go Sari!!!It will be interesting hearing the rest of the report from Sari because I can't imagine the Ratdog people just 'sitting still' and no smoke - ummm, not seeing that happening either. Will be good to know just how new management is going to deal with the inevitable.

Thanks for keeping us informed!

Hey Deb, Sari just called again.

Once the lights went down, the smoking began, and so far, that seems to be ok...but Sari wanted to go outside to have a cig and that's now forbidden. NO GOING OUT is the "new policy." That's the word she keeps hearing...there's "new management" and "new policies."

If she calls again, I'll post more.

So...smoking indoors in NYC is forbidden, you have to go outside. "THEY" won't let you outside. Interesting.

Interesting indeed. I've never been to a show that did not allow you to exit building to a smoking area - even in cities which do not have the no indoor smoking laws like NY. Seems like this could come back and slap them in the face. Thanks for the update!

You have to go to tmz.com on the homepage and see what he was packing. He is hilarious. He's very concerned about a natural disaster occuring, hence all the grass, guns and lights and sound system on/in the car.

Has there ever been any of the patdown searches in prior Beacon years as they like to do in Atlanta? That infuriates me!

The search gooing into the Beacon before this yr. was a joke and if you went in early enough, you wouldnt even get any type of search.

Ahhhhhh the good ole days

RatDog Review Portion:

The RatDog show was lovely. I had a great time and the Beacon was so great. The song selection was terrific. I loved the Other Ones Jam. Sweet Magnolia was beautiful as was Baby Blue. Uncle John's Band was joyous. There were a lot of songs I never heard before and I think this was my first Black Muddy River. Definitely my first with Bob, though I vaguely remember it during the Joan/Phil show last year. Bob was so great tonight. The band was so great. DJ Logic came out as did a few other guests who I didn't know. DJ Logic was great as was the trumpet player. They both came out on this instrumental I didn't know. I don't know if it was a few songs but it was a jammy spacey esoteric song. The whole band was terrific. My third GD type experience other than Phil and Friends. LOL.

OK, the low down on the Beacon:

Too lax for me. It was way over sold (and sold out) or all the people from the seating areas were in the orchestra. It looked to me like a free for all.

And there was smoking of all kinds. :-) :-( (mixed feelings)

But nobody harshed my mellow. :-)

Well, except for the guy on my right who thought it was ok to lean on my shoulder as a come on. In the end he was harmless, and he wasn't unattractive, so it was all good.

A little analysis:

I think the venue should go GA on the floor. The removal of the seats would allow for more space. People who want to sit can go up stairs and people who like to stand and dance can stand and dance and groove. And no one would be blocking the aisles. That's pretty much what people were doing tonight and there weren't any aisles and everybody was way cool.
