Im not into drugs..Im one of those Deadheads who likes The Deads music without ever being into drugs..But ive got to say that ive been wondering many times how it would feel to be under the influence of Acid..Was it so glourious as i read in countless of books about the Sixties,Haight Ashbury and the the hole scene back then..i was born in 77 so i missed the sixties..But everytime i read books about the sixties and looking at pictures like in the great book "Hippie" by Barry Miles i wish i was born earlier sometimes..Was Acid so good for the mind and soul as many of the stars and musicians from that era said..?i wonder..i have never tried it and i never will..But many times i wonder what it would be like..LSD-25 in the sixties and LSD today..Anyone who knows if the drugs is the same today as it was then?

Cheers from the Hippie in Sweden

Well, I used to do a fair amount of acid in late '60s/early '70s and by and large most of my "trips' were good ones. But after awhile I got real burnt out on psychdelics, and finally quit. The one bad thing about acid you're going to be very "out of it" for 8 to 12 hours. That's a very long time. As it is, haven't done any acid at all since the early '80s, so can't comment whether or not there is any differences.

In the bio of Jefferson Airplane, "Got A Revolution" There is a story that Paul Katner and Grace Slick DROVE while tripping. I have never done any acid but I askeda friend who did and he said you can function. It's different than alcohol.

You just have to seperate the fantasy from the reality! Which may not be easy to do.

I have this friend, see, who took some acid at a number of Dead shows. I, I mean he, found it was mostly a speedy, long lasting thing, that makes you laugh alot and makes you reflective but in moderation does not make you see things that are not there. And no flashbacks ever, what a ripoff!

RE playing music and LSD: I read an account of Woodstock (related by Leo Lyons of Ten Years After) that he was warned upon his arrival to the site that ALL of the food and drink available for musicians backstage had been spiked with acid. I've read other accounts that reinforce this. According to legend, many of the performers at Woodstock were trippin' their nads off!

It has been widely reported that Jimi Hendrix was also "electric" at the Monterey Pop Festival. I've seen his clips from that performance - WOW!

But the bottom line is - there are no drugs or substances that are going to make you play better or improve your chops. All these players were among the best in the world to begin with.

As someone else pointed out, the single worst thing about LSD is that it's effects last too long. Not only that, but you'll spend most of the next day recouperating. The lack of sleep ... the sore jaw (from laughing your arse off). I mean, this is what I've been told!

I did my share of LSD from my late teens till my mid 20s(I was born in '74) and by no means would I encourage anyone to copy anything I did because we're all biologically unique and what feels good to me might feel bad to you.
If you're going to experiment I'd recommend mushrooms over acid because they're organic and not man made in someone's backwoods bathtub cut with whatever poison you can imagine. Most of my LSD trips were good enough but I felt like absolute **** the next day whereas I still felt pretty good after taking mushrooms. That is just my experience.

oh yea that one is true.........or so i heard.

as for LSD, in my limited experience with it, it can open your mind to some possibilities previously unconsidered.......the trick is actually DOING something with that information....

i'll take some X over LSD any day. not as trippy but just as much fun.

I have to say I have always had good trips in my experience. Probably because I always did it in perfect settings (outdoor concerts/festivals/camping) In my younger yrs. I did drive home a few times rom Giants stadium after Dead or Floyd shows. I look back now and dont know how I did it but its possible. Never had a bad experience although my acid days are long gone. Much too intense for me at this point in my life and lasts WAY too long. Last time I did it was 98 at Red Rocks for the ABB. It was one of the greatest nights of my life. I always say part of me is still on that mountain. Thats the way to exit on acid. At Red Rocks. Now organics..........thats another story

There comes a time in your life when you just have to "grow up." Taking long lasting, intense psychadelics just doesn't have a place in my life anymore. In college I had the free time to indulge myself with an "alternative universe." Today, I'm a lawyer and drugs have no place in my life, especially the ones that last for 12 hours!!

The last time I did acid was at a NYE Phish concert at Big Cypress, the one where the band literally played all night. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Didn't take too much and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I ate the acid at about 11:00pm and was still tripping in the pm of the next day. Way too long. It wasn't intense, just couldn't sleep due to the light show going on in my head.

I wouldn't recommend drugs to anyone because you never know what road that person will travel. However, if you are going to do it, make sure you are in a good environment with close friends whom you trust.

As for the acid of the 60's compared to the acid of today.... Couldn't make that comparison, wasn't alive back then.

Peace

All due respect, Linnie, but X is for junior achievers, OK? (lol). Good LSD is great, but that's the rub--you have to trust your source. And as stated earlier, you're high for a while, and you'll need the next day to recuperate.

Mushroom chocolates are my preferred method these days, when I can find them. In moderation, of course, and under the right conditions. Fresh shrooms are gross to me--I can't get them down. But chocolate candy shroom go down nice. A little gritty, maybe, but no gross "shroom taste". Freeze dried shrooms are also really good. They're no more gross than stale popcorn.

Personally, I would advise against going somewhere like a nightclub. A nice open field (like Wanee, for example), or an open-air club (like Freebird Live in Jax Beach, for example) is OK. You want to be with other people who are tripping, or have experience tripping. Being around a**holes is bad enough to begin with, but on psychedelics, it's downright dangerous. Putting yourself in a pleasant safe environment is really important. You don't want to eat some shrooms and then go do something with real life importance (meeting your new girlfriend or boyfriend's parents for the first time, meeting an insurance adjuster, hanging out with your boss, etc)

If you're at home, and unencumbered with inconveniances (kids, parents, whatever)--my suggestion is to get everything you want ahead of time. Maybe something easy to fix for eating, beverages (you really don't want to drive anywhere), if you smoke, go ahead an get an extra pack. Then--just enjoy.

Oh--and this is important--if you start to feel "too high", don't fight it. That'll only make things worse. Just try to relax, and bear in mind that the high will be over eventually.

As far as functioning under the influence like many drugs there were different dosages. Many folks preferred to function(drive cars etc) after the peak where most halogenations occurred but once you got through that, your senses were much attuned to the surroundings. Hendrix was indeed my preferred music because he sounded so clean tripping with every note almost perfect and I sensed how fast his fingers were(lol)-I liked the Moody blues for a more comfortable peak.. I always stayed put during my peaks of the trip, the Brothers also were very mellow as were the dead when i listen to them tripping. I was peaking at Watkins Glen during the Dead set, I have said this many times, with all distractions going on I was glad they played a very mellow set. With the sun setting, the Band &the Brothers were perfect for my after burn.

fav albums to listen to trippping
Idlewild South
any thing by Hendrix
steve miller "sailor"
"Music from the bing pink "
first few Moody blues albums

These were albums that had a good flow with no one song distacting from the set.

live were sometimes okay-i really like Hendrix in the west live with his version of Johhny B Good while tripping , but the audiiance could be a distraction.

I concur with this. I've found the "high" of mushrooms to be similar, if not identical, to LSD, but with significantly less "come down" time and less side effects. But, then all that was 20+ years ago. Haven't "tripped" since the early 80s.

As far as listening to music while tripping...I couldn't do it. Even the supposed "psychedelic music"...nope, it just annoyed me to no end.

And, PLAYING music? I never was inspired to play in mid "trip". But, afterwards? You bet. All the trips I took, I was always drawn to nature. And for me here in SoCal, that meant "the beach"...or at least just being outdoors. I would get claustrophobic in any indoor environment, regardless of size of room or building.

The Grateful Dead were the house band for the acid tests run by the Pranksters in the mid 60's - before Hoffman's creation became illegal. It is my understanding that the band and the audience ate the lsd. I believe that there were various 'props' around the dance floor.....lights/sound machines/shapes...what a freaking time: Cassady, Kesey, Babbs, Mountain Girl, Bear

I'd definately go with the shrooms... better trips, less side effects. They may be a little funky going down, one time I had them mixed in with a plate of chinese food- perfect dining. Make sure you have nothing too important to take care of, and surround yourself with good people. Haven't done them in about 25 years (if my memory serves me well...).

Owsley made a limited set of belt buckles back during this time with the steal your face logo (which he designed along with an artist by the name of Bob Thomas). These were not for sale to general public at time but you can possibly get one now. Owsley has a website (www.thebear.org) which displays some of his artwork.

My one and only experience with acid was in '69. I really enjoyed the high. I was able to drive, but what I didn't like about it was that you had no control. The drug had to run its course and you were at its mercy, that and a few football posters on my wall going into action kept me awake for awhile
