I've been REALLY unhappy at my job for a long time now: been there 8 years and the last 3 have straight up sucked. I've been working as a proofreader/editor at one of the biggest ad agencies in the world and especially as my priorities shifted to raising my little girl, I've felt like I really needed to be doing something more useful for the world ... Only one life, trying not to feel as though I'm wasting it.

Well I've been reaching out for months now trying to get something better, and today my ship came in. I'm going to work for UNICEF managing a series of projects designed to help kids in developing countries get better education throughout their childhood, even in times of crisis. I feel like I may actually amount to something when I grow up aftr all!

Going from working as a cog in the Madison Avenue money machine that sells people crap they don't need, to (hopefully) playing a small part in making life better for innocent kids who were misfortunate enought to be born into poor and crisis-torn places -- well, it seems to good to be true, and to make a change like this at 43 feels like a real gift.

Most important to me, I feel like I can look my own daughter in the eye and mean it when I tell her that Daddy's going off to do something good all day.
Like I said, what a GIFT.

I know very well what it's like to hate your job.

Dude - that is awesome!!! Congratulations! Wow, what a difference in focus between the two careers. I've always tried to put my children first before my career, and I'll just say that I haven't really had a career. By the world's standards (and society's), I'm not much of anything - a failure you might say, but I've been able to spend more time with my children than my father did and hopefully have had a positive influence on them. I recently made a decision to pursue what I really have a passion for so I will be working toward becoming a music minister or director of music in a church. It may take a few years and I've certainly "wasted" many years, but I'm going for it. I'd wish you good luck, but I don't believe in luck. I'll say this though - count your blessings and Praise God for all of those precious little children that you will be able to touch in the coming years. When you are in the winter of your life, you will be able to see their smiling faces and smile yourself - knowing that you made a difference - a big one!

Wow, that's something. It's so brutally hard to change paths once your in the groove of doing one thing.

Now Pete, don't pull a "lost in america"...

seriously, that's great news. congrats.

LMAO!

I'm going to touch Indians...

And once my wife gambles away the "nest egg," I'll go back to Madison Avenue to eat $hit... LOL

That movie is one of my faves.

Thanks all of you guys for your kind words.

Bless you!
Takes a lot to actually stop thinking about a move like that and to actually do it.

I could go on about why I work for the government, but this is your thread...(although recently my wife has been asking why I don't go back to the "real world" of project/engineering management and make an extra $100K a year...)

So, congratulations and good luck, and thanks too.

Good for you, Pete
Proof that we all can make a difference, a small piece at a time. You don't have to be Bill Gates or Warren Buffett to make a difference.
