Breaking News !!!! According to a pretty knowledgable guy from work... a dj on the local radio station this morning is reporting that Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers Band is playiig with the Eric Clapton Band , and that its Dickey's father's birthday is today and there will be a birthday celebration.

This just shows you what kinda schlock they play on the local stations down here 99 percent of the time.

Well, Hai, according to Sister Rosario, Dickey will be making a few unexpected appearances so I would not be surprised if Eric is on the list.

If Dickey shows up and plays with Derek and Eric, would be cool. So far Derek's guitars haven't made it to the stage yet .....
Eric has several up there and Robert Cray...but NO DEREK ax so far as of about 30 minutes ago.

BBB...not on set list either....

Nice show I was jonesing for some Derek, been a long time since NYE. Big suprise, Derek got a new guitar and played it all night, a Telecaster, .....just kidding heh heh

I gotta apologize to my bros and sis' , I didn't get a camera in. When we arrived, they had evacuated the arena due to a grease fire in the kitchen, people all over the place outside.
The camera thing...I figured American Airlines Center, TOP SECURITY...turns out I coulda took a Sherman Tank in there and nobody would have questioned it.
Back to the show, very good but it wasn't the dTb or the ABB or Derek and the Dominoes. Everybody put on a great performance and I really like the way Doyle Bramhall took up on vocals , nice job Doyle. He's got a strong clean voice. Eric played with computer generated precision. All strat other than a few wooden tunes.
Derek, was Derek...unfortunately the band didn't search for dynamics the way the dTb or the ABB does when Derek is soloing, but if you get a chance to see this tour, you won't be disapointed. IN a nutshell, these folks played flawless, but the dynamics weren't there.
I'll fill you in on the set list later.
I gotta apologize once again for not getting any stills or vid from the show to share with my HTW bros and sis'...but in order to redeme myself, somehow I ended up talking with Derek on the telephone after the show and asked him for a favor.
Yeah,.... search me, I know, stuff happens and I just go with it.
Anyway I knew Derek was busy and I had a few comments and a request, a request any self respecting Derek Trucks Band fan would ask....
" Derek, does anybody have a tape from the 3/31/06 Athens show with Jimmy Herring?"
He chuckled a bit and said he figured that they were out there and I explained we're having trouble coming up with anything. He said he would try to send out a feeler for one. Hope we come up with this show.

I saw the show in Birmingham, and thoroughly enjoyed it. But anyone expecting to see a Derek showcase will be disappointed. I think Clapton is deliberatley keeping Derek somewhat in the wings, and I can't say I blame him. Unleashing Derek could be embarrassing for Clapton if he isn't careful.

Thanks for the review, Jon. I'm glad you got to see the show. To me, this was a possible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I didn't want to pass up.

Hai & Eric concert review

Hai, that headline is deceptive. This post is not a review of your concert review. No, I had an unusual dream last night that involved you. Against my better judgment, let me review it here in this public forum.

I was at an outdoor concert, and it was your band, with you on lead guitar and vocals. And your second guitarist was Eric Clapton. Not only that, but he was playing a Les Paul Goldtop!

The stage lineup, from the audience's left, was like this:
Eric, drums back there, Hai, and bass
At first I was in the back right of the audience, but after the first song ended, I moved up toward you, on your 4-foot-high stage.

To backtrack to probably irrelevant detail, the stage was actually the lid over a rectangular swimming pool. At some point--I think when I first became aware of being there, but before I saw who was playing--the front of the stage actually lifted up several feet as though hinged from the back. (I don't recall musicians and equipment flying off as a result.) And then the lid closed, and I saw this stage was set up in a certain place at the local university campus. In fact, the stage was facing west, and I was approaching it from the southwest.

It was then that I started recognizing you and Eric up there playing, and it was pretty hot. Nice going, Hai! Soon you stopped, though, and this is when I moved significantly forward. I quietly tried to get your attention, but you were addressing the whole crowd, so I kept gravitating left toward Eric. Hai, you were talking to the audience about getting Eric to play a Gibson--I'm not kidding! I think you used the term "made" him play it! You said something to the crowd like "Aren't you glad I made Eric play it?" or "It's a good thing I made him play it."

There was no one between me and the stage, yet I stopped 5 feet shy of it, due to shyness in front of Eric. Then someone went right up to the edge of the stage right at Eric's feet, and more people started moving forward, so I thought I'd better do the same thing. I was still shy, so I went to the stage halfway between Eric and you as you guys started playing again. It was cool sounding, and soon my shyness melted away. I was like, Why be shy? Face it--Eric can see you now!

And I remember Eric playing really cool stuff on that guitar. Though I was halfway between you two and I could hear your guitar playing some kind of rhythm role, Hai, I was paying about all my attention to Eric. Once I loosened up, I was like drumming on the edge of the stage and generally rocking out. Eric's tone on the Goldtop was great, because his attack and vibrato were wringing great sounds out of it. He was playing really unusual lines and stuff, too.

Soon the dream disappeared, and that's the last of it I remember. Nice way to go out. So, that's my dream review of the day, Hai! Hope it comes true!

Oh, one big reason for some of this must've been the fact that last night I listened--for the first time in too long a while--to the Allman Brothers at American U, 1970.12.13. I remember several times closing my eyes, especially listening to Duane and thinking was a great sound he was getting out of what must've been that Goldtop. Plus, of course, I was comparing his playing to Layla, just 3 months before, and At Fillmore East, just 4 months later. But that Goldtop on this recording had some great odd tones--which must've been at least as much Duane as the low-fidelity recording. With my eyes closed, I would be following what Duane was doing, and sometimes he'd get into totally unique things, and I'd still practically "see" just what he was doing. I mean, I'd visualize his hands and fingers.

Your ample and unusual stage banter in the dream, Hai, could have been a reflection of how much Duane was addressing the crowd on this recording. He was pretty lively up there, and so were you.

The strange part about the stage's being a lid to a swimming pool must've been from my squeezing extra pizza slices into these rectangular Tupperware-type containers just before going to bed. One of the lids I was having trouble keeping down, getting a 100% seal, and I had to put a couple rubber bands around it. That was one of the last things I did before sleeping last night. The pizza I ate probably helped with the dream, too!

So, anyway, Hai, the coolest thing is that the Goldtop, upon your demand, got put into Eric's hands for the dream, and it made him sound especially good.
