Butch Trucks' recent interview about last years 3/25 gig at the Beacon (in which the ABB opened with Mountain Jam), got me thinking about that concert.
My Aunt, Anne Watkins, who lives in Rye, New York, had the band regularly crash at her house when they were playing in New York in the early days...the band had no money, and my brother, Twiggs would call Anne and get the OK for the band to stay with her. (As an aside, she nursed Dickey back to health when he had an attack of hepatitis).
I was going to the 3/25/06 show and called Anne to see if she would go and she said she would love to. The last time she had seen the ABB perform she was sitting on the stage at the Fillmore East! Kirk West had a chair set up for her on the stage at the Beacon, but she said she preferred to be in the audience with the fans.
We were standing up throughout the entire first set and I was concerned that it might be too much for her as she is now 82 years old. I turned to Anne and told her it was ok to sit down and pointed to the folks behind us who were sitting in their seats. Anne looked at me and replied "They must be old!"
After the show, Anne was able to spend some time with Gregg reminiscing about those early days.
Of course, Anne being at the Beacon and being able to hear the band again was the icing on the cake for me. By the way, she says she is coming to the show with me this year and is bringing a date!

So we now know the ID of one of the Beacon special guests. Down south here we would say, "she's a pistol!". Thanks for the story.

It just goes to show that you're never too old to rock and roll!

What show are you bringing Aunt Anne to this year?
