There was a thread about this several months ago. I
don't really remember what all was said ... but my take
on the song has always been that it harkens back to
simpler times. Kind of a nostalgic look at how it must
have been to live in horse and buggy days ... maybe
stop off at a tavern for a few beers... tie him to the
hitching post .. he's still out there waiting several hours
later. "pony boy ... carry me home"
But ... I'm probably wrong ... that is just how I've always
thought about it.

It's about the 1969 photo session at Otis Redding's farm, and the subsequent nickname the other band members gave Dickey as a result of the photo session.

From the thread crosstownbar mentioned...I like coots* take on this one...

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----
On the Pony Boy subject, I recall a show where Dickey related that his uncle would ride a horse to the bar because of DUI problems. I'll have to try and find that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

That's true, Dickey told that story at the Beacon one year.

OR

**********************

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Elvin Bishop has some doozies, but one of my fav silly lyrics is from Dickey...
" Front feet doing the shuffle, back feet too"
------------------------------------------------------------------

Hai, that's okay because it's Dickey's pony that's doing the shuffle:
"Look out the door, there beside that tree;
Well, that's my pony, looking after me;
Front feet doing the shuffle; back feet, too."

Unless you want to insist it should be "hooves."
------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, now I get it...it is
Pony, boy carry me home
not
Ponyboy carry me home...

LOL...Thanks Peter, I was never one that listened to too many lyrics that close.
For years I thought a line in Don't Keep Me Wondering " was
"I know I know you never been to bed before", I was severely keyboard lashed for that one time.

I wish I was in Tiajuana,
Eating Bar B Qued iguana.

So it's realy about a pony then. Listening to the lyrics I already imagined an old saloon with a guy drinkin' happily till he drops haha! Like in the old days

But I doubted it, because in a USA carsshop I saw a poster of the Mustang Pony....

Thanks!!!!
