Years back before the dramshop laws, I use to work for a beer wholesaler here in NC. It wasnt uncommon for us to have (a) beer during lunch. We always had a cold one in the afternoons when all the trucks came in. When the brewerys had their meetings, beer or their products were always being served. I was always everyone's friends on Sundays. Our area didnt sell alcoholic beverages on Sunday. I would always get a call or twelve wanting me to go to the warehouse and get a few cases. I wouldnt allow them to pay me til Monday. I had to protect my license. Haha.

I can remember the new hires faces back then. When we came in after a long day, I would ask them if they wanted a beer. They would look at me like, your kidding arent you. Of course when I popped the top, their faces grew from shock to smiles.........

Thankfully, all the DUI laws stiffened up, and I had to change our company's rules on drinking. Sorry folks no more drinking at the warehouse after work. We allowed everyone (1) beer when we had meetings. The time had come to be a little more responsible.

Used to have a drink or two at lunch, but that stopped about 10 years ago. Besides the culture shift away from it, I was just getting too damn old to take it anymore.

I never understood why a beer in the afternoon/lunchtime can make you sleepy - whereas, later on it's fine ?

Probably because your afternoon activity after a drink is boring, whereas evening activities are more lively. Or maybe it's just man's natural desire to take an afternoon nap. Whatever it is, it's very real!

Lunch break? No. Right before work, but just to get me over that little hump between 8:00 and 5:00.

I used to bartend, and my friends and I would refer to bartending as "the buffet," because we would just walk in and go to work behind the bar and grab ourselves as much as we could ingest while we worked. Very fun. Some blurry "Last Calls".

Now I teach, so the thought of drinking on the job never occurs to me. It would be a horrible place to have any kind of buzz.

This post is so timely. The team I work with ( about 10 people) took a new girl to lunch today. Our boss is out of the office so I thought it would be fun to sit outside (we are in Phoenix and it is beautiful out today), chill and maybe have a cocktail or two. (At my old job we used to always have drinks at at lunch if a sales rep took us out...it was kind of the norm in the advertising industry...lots of booze and drugs) So before we left I asked the most Sr. person if it was ok to order a beer or something. So she looks at me with this blank stern expression and said "Allyson, you know it is not appropriate to work on company time. That would be breaking policy". She is a total stiff. We are complete opposites!!! Jeeze...we are in advertising not brain surgery!!!

Anyway, I do enjoy a cocktail or two at lunch if I don't have anything important to do in the afternoon. Oh well.

I am hoping to sneak out a bit early today and have a cold one...remember my boss is away!!!

Drinkin' On the Job

by The Rainmakers

The farmer he got plowed
The bricklayer got plastered
The mechanic he got tanked
The construction worker got blasted
And Daddy beat up Mommy and broke her collarbone for good luck
Everybody's drunk
Everybody's wasted
Everybody's drinkin' on the job

The garbageman got trashed
The janitor got messy
The taxi driver got smashed
The waitress she got tipsy
In Kansas City, New York City
Great big city, itty-bitty city
Everybody's drunk
Everybody's wasted
Everybody's drinkin' on the job

There's a whole lot of places that I ain't been
A whole lotta things that I ain't seen
A whole lotta things I'll never be
The generation that would change the world
Is still looking for it's car keys

The terorist got bombed
The President got hit
Security was tight
The Secret Service got lit
F.B.I.
C.I.A.
D.W.I.
U.S.A.
Everybody's drunk
Everybody's wasted
Everybody's stoned
And there's nothing that's gonna change it
'Cause everybody's drunk
Everybody's wasted
Everybody's drinkin' on the job

When the law firm I work for (as a paralegal) was much smaller, we'd got paid every Friday and we'd go to lunch at Lena's in Cherry Hill. I'd have 2 or 3 7&7s or a couple of beers, but no work got done after that.

Now, we're a much bigger firm with a minimum of billable hours and I'm old, so it does not appeal to me. That...and our office moved and Lena's is closed

I once worked with a fella, Steve I'll call him ('cause that's what his name was/is). When we left the shop, around 7:30 - 8:00 AM, we would head for the 'High's' store (the 7-11 of it's day). I'd get coffee & a snack. Steve would get two Chili Cheese Hillshire Farms Hot Half Smokes with onions! He'd open his lunch box (remember those old black, tin lunch boxes with room for a thermos in the top?). He'd lift out 2 sandwiches, underneath was tin foil, underneath that was two 16 ounce Budweisers. That was breakfast.

We went from there, downhill to lunch. By the afternoon we both had smiles on our faces.

I don't know, she sounds GREAT to me. Wish my job had that policy! Sadly, I choose not to drink at lunch even though I could. I prefer weekend benders.

Allyson, I though only civil service workers like me had to follow that rule. Don't get caught working! It will ruin it for everyone. That's what they told me. It was a challenge for me at 1st because I actually enjoy earning my pay but I'm coming around.
