These guys are awesome. Can I get an amen? Never hear anyone talking about them, and these guys are just so good.

amen and hallelujah! one of the all time great bands. sly was a true genius. it's such a shame that drugs got the better of him.

I love this band. Great Horns
Larry Graham (invented Slap Bass) on Bass.
Many consider their set at Woodstock as the best of the festival.

I want to take your higher::

Freddie: Feeling's gettin stronger
Larry: Music's gettin longer too
Rose: Music is flashin me
Sly: I want to take you higher
Baby baby baby light my fire

All: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

Freddie: Feeling's nitty-gritty
Larry: Sound is in the city too
Rose: Music's still flashin' me
Sly: Don't ya want to get higher
Baby baby baby light my fire.

All: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

Sly: Harmonica solo
All Repeated: Higher!

Sly: C'mon light my fire
Want to take you higher

All: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

Freddie: Feeling that should make you move
Larry: Sounds that should help you groove
Rose: Music still flashin' me
Sly: Take your places
I want to take you higher
Baby baby baby light my fire.

Freddie: Guitar solo

All: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

All Repeated: Higher!
Sly: Let's take you, do you wanna go, etc.

Cynthia: Trumpet solo

All Repeated: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka, Higher!

Larry: Bass solo

All Repeated: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka, Higher!

Jerry: Sax solo

All Repeated: Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

Great band, great tunes, and Sly was too cool. I loved their set from the movie "Woodstock". Hot Fun in the Summertime, Everyday People, Dance to the Music, are classic.

Oh yeah, AMEN!

Sly's appearance on the Dick Cavett show is classic. He controlled Cavett and the other guests. He was not a dumb guy. Was a pretty good producer and manager, too.

My only problem with Sly was he had a tendency to be late for concerts, or even be a no-show. Went to see him in 1973 and he was over 2 hours late and then only played for about 30 minutes. I think the drugs already had a grip on him. But he put out some great music...nothing else quite like it.

If we're talking classic Sly on TV...then I vote for his appearance on the Mike Douglas show.Muhammad Ali (who I'm also a huge fan of) was also on the show,& Sly & he did'nt quite agree on a few things....& Sly did not back down,....great television!!

Oh yes -- ditto squared or whatever -- Stand! Life, Fun, m'Lady -- their greatest hits album hasn't collected one speck of dust over the 30-35 years I've had it. Good thread
When I was in jr high I recall a bunch of kids grooving out in a hallway to Hot Fun in the Summertime -- whenever I hear that song I always recall that group of black kids just Digging on that song -- their sense of joy and fun left a real impression on me.

I saw Sly open for Jimi at the Fillmore East sometime in '68 I think, boy they could bring the funk. They had the place going crazy. I recall there was a dance line down one of the isles at the end of the set.

Sly and The Family Stone, one of the best bands of the sixties. Shame that he didn't put out anything else that I can recall since. That's close to over 40 years!

When I was a young teen I babysat for a very 'hip' couple. They would always leave a nicely rolled joint for me to enjoy after the kids were put to bed. They also had a fabulous record collection. I swear those nights were some of my best memories of getting high while listening to all that great music. It was there that I first heard Sly & the Family Stone. I had never heard anything like it before but loved it instantly and almost 40 yrs later I still love it!!

His recent "tribute" was bizarre, & uncomfortable. Hope Sly is doing well, as you don't hear too many good stories about him after his fall.

A fantastic band ; a pioneering band.

I loved those songs as a little kid ; I love them today.

And, yes, I hope Sly is doing well also.

I saw them in concert once. As stated above, they were late, but man...it was worth it!

They only played for about 45 minutes. It was at my college and someone from my dorm worked the show so I got in free as a guest!

Sly & the Family Stone
"If You Want Me to Stay"

If you want me to stay
I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
I'm about to go
And then you'll know
For me to stay here I've got to be me
You'll never be in doubt
That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
Count the days I'm gone
Forget reaching me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while

When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person that you really are now
You got to get it straight
How could I ever be late
When you're my woman takin' up my time
How could you ever allow
I guess I wonder how
How could you get out of pocket for fun
When you know that you never number two
Number one gonna be number one

I'll be good
I wish I could
Get this message over to you now
When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person you really are now
I'll be so good
I wish I could
Get the message over to you now

One of my favorite Sly and The Family Stone songs
Probably still have some 8 tracks around ... had to make sure that besides the records I could listen in my car as well !

quote:
Sly was the funk

Oh so true !!!

A timely thread as the Family Stone's first seven albums are being re released, remastered with extra tracks next month. Some amazing music.

Sly and his band are some of the best - LOVE his funky self, have since the 60's (still pull out his CD's for a listen often - especially at parties)! Sad about the drugs pull on Sly ...
Did anyone see his performance at 2006 Grammy's (I didn't see that show but hear he was a performer)?

Sly is one of the legends whose music will rock forever. I think they are just a real "good feeling" band. They sure were ahead of their time. Love em!!
