Hello,

Well tonight was EC's (and Derek's ) first Melbourne concert.

After seeing the first gig they did in Sydney (their first in Australia) last Monday (and being totally blown away) I was pretty much just as excited for this one as I was for Sydney.

I didn't know if I would think it would be as good - or if some of the magic had worn off seeing I had never seen EC or Derek before and had so much anticpation for the first one.

Well let me tell you - it was BETTER. Much better.

I think some of the nerves had worn off for them - I don't think it's easy for bands to play in Australia for the first time - it's a long way from anywhere and the musicians often haven't been here before and aren't totally sure what to expect - then they play - the people go nuts and they get into it more. Just a guess but there often seem to be more nerves for a first show of a tour here.

Anyway - tonight - I thought the playing was better than the Sydney show I saw. They all looked more relaxed - not that Derek didn't look like Mr Cool the other night but his playing was better, cleaner and he seemed to give himself a bit more time to think - more space to breath and let the music flow.

This is the line up for those of you who don't know.

Eric Clapton - guitar and vocals
Doyle Bramhall II - guitar and vocals
Derek Trucks - guitar
Chris Stainton - keyboards
Tim Carmon - keyboards
Willie Weeks - bass
Steve Jordan - drums
Michelle John - backing vocals
Sharon White - backing vocals

Willie Weeks and Steve Jordan are a killer rhythm section. Steve grooves so hard and Willie slots right in with him but kind of lays back into the drums powerhouse groove. It's a hell of a combination. You have to consciously look at them and take note though - with Eric, Derek and Doyle doing their thang it's easy not to take note of the rhythm section thundering along.

If you want to look up the set list it's here:
http://www.whereseric.com/tour/down-under-tour-2007/03-February-2007_eric-c lapton-his-band-rod-laver-arena-melbourne-australia.html

I won't paste it hear in case you are going to the show - it's a lot more fun not knowing what they are going to do next.

I'm totally biased - but man Derek takes the gig to another level. I mean EC is EC but Derek as we all know - is on his own level. His playing was beautiful man - just beautiful. Killer tone and the coolest melodic solos - I love the Eastern influence he throws in with the playing - very sublte in parts but man it just adds layers to the greatness that his playing is.

Doyle's main solo tonight (and he gets to do a lot) was awesome. More so than ever I could hear that he'd hung around with SRV coping SRV's albert king licks. He nailed them tonight. Awesome bends - big intervals and he just let the notes hang. Nailed them.

EC solo'd great - I think his playing was better than the Sydney one I saw too.

Plus when the band laid back into the blues - they really bought it down low.

I took my camera and got some shots - if I can work out how to post a few I will. They aren't the best photos in the world but they are photos of Derek and co. so the subjects are at least some of the coolest dudes on the planet.

Anyway - I'm going again tomorow night. Then that's it for Melbourne. Off to Adelaide for next Friday and that's it for me.

All a warm up for the Beacon!!

THANK YOU DEREK FOR COMING TO AUSTRALIA. BRING THE DTB OUT HERE SOMETIME.

The crowd are so into Derek - at first I think they are surprised that EC has a guitar player taking a few solos - then they realise there is something more to that going on.

It's so cool of EC as others have said to step out of the lime light on his own world tour and put Derek up front - and Doyle.

If you get a chance to see this gig - GO SEE THIS GIG. It's more than worth it. Especially if it's with Derek - obviously.

Cheers,

Nick.

How cool is it in the Sydney one where Derek starts a solo off with the 'theme' from voluntered slavery.

DAMN I LOVED THAT.

Yeah - 3rd one tomorrow night.

4th one next Friday.

My band hates me - cept we were all there tonight. Band moment!!

Funny to hear that the shows in NYC were not as good musically - I bet they were still great shows though.

they were great shows---but the setlists you're getting are way more interesting & the group, having had more time together is tighter & looser---i don't mean to suggest the earlier shows were inferior, but rather that they have improved over time---like a fine "bottle of red wine"

Nice review, man, and thank you. I'm going March 18th in San Jose and forwarded it to some others who will be there.

Well the 2nd and last show in Melbourne was pretty damn good.

It's just a great gig.

The crowd was a bit dissapointing - they sat on their asses the whole night. I think that kind of mellowed the band out a little for the last few songs and into the encore. Last nights was definately pumping - tonight the encore songs were a bit flat.

Some people actually started leaving at the encore clapping bit - and then into the encore songs.

What kind of IDIOT would leave a gig when the gig is EC? Especially when it's the last time he'll EVER be playing in Australia.

Some people just don't get it man.

But I did LOVE the show.

Could I ever get sick of hearing/seeing Derek play live? No way.

Doyle and Derek look like they are great mates and really enjoy doing the shows together. They seem like they have a lot of fun.

Tonight Derek was doing some pretty out there Eastern type experimental stuff and Doyle looked over at EC with a 'is he meaning to play those notes look' and EC just laughed at Doyle. All with Derek playing some ultra cool **** .

So now I have till Friday before I see the last show I'm going to see. It's so good having them spaced out - I'm getting a real feel for the show/set and the playing. I am never going to forget these shows.

Eat a Peach,

Nick.

All these photos were taken by me on Sat the 3rd of Feb.

Not great shots but it's cool cause it's from the gig I went to so I'm glad I took my camera. (I couldn't stop tapping my foot to take these - blame Derek for that - haha).

Cheers,

Nick.

Thanks for sharing your reviews and pics, Nick! Loving it (am just bummed that I'll be missing this tour of Eric with Derek ). Saw in a post on the Guest Book that Roger Water's band showed up for one of these shows and gave Derek excellent reviews! How cool is that! See you in March/April!
