With Warren and the Mule on vacation it's time to re-visit the topic.

Last time we agreed that Warren's nastiest most menacing original song is Blind Man in the Dark.

Runner ups are extremely numerous and to me would include Temporary Saint, Brand New Angel, World of Difference and numerous others. Now I would like to expand the topic to include songs written by others that Mule has covered. We are looking for nasty and menacing here:

My vote is for Mr. Big. I would consider as runner up, 32-20 Blues.

"Mr. Big, You'd better watch out! Don't you be hangin' round. Cause for you I will dig a great big hole in the ground!" It's nasty when Paul Rogers sings it and Warren makes it twice as menacing.

Doug

I absolutely lose it every single time I hear 32-20. I don't care where they played it, or if it's an "off" night, or anything. Every single time.

Meancing:

baleful: threatening or foreshadowing evil or tragic developments; "a baleful look"; "forbidding thunderclouds"; "his tone became menacing"; "ominous rumblings of discontent"; "sinister storm clouds"; "a sinister smile"; "his threatening behavior"; "ugly black clouds"; "the situation became ugly"

i vote for "Mother Earth" since its heavy, forboding and carries a message that we are all effed.

I would put Bad Little Doggie in a second category I call angry or disdainful. That would also include Slackjaw Jezebel, Mr. Man, Towering Fool, Game Face and numerous others.

Mother Earth is definitely a good one. That whole first album was pretty menacing.

I agree with Mother Earth and would have to add War Pigs. I wish they would bring this back, I never got the chance to see it live

Larger than Life

If I concentrate will it just come to me
Run it by me I'm willing to learn
Make no mistake you'll never be allowed to come inside
Just be glad you're here on the outside looking in

Cause it won't take long to get to the bottom
Won't take much to be looking down at yourself
You think you know something but you don't know nothing
Everybody knows that death is larger than life

Captivate yourself you're the only one that can help you now
With your cartoon savior by your side
Look around the room do you see anyone that you recognize

Cause it won't take long to get to the bottom
Won't take much to be looking down at yourself
You think you know something but you don't know nothing
Everybody knows that death is larger than life

Cause it won't take long to get to the bottom
Won't take much to be looking down at yourself
You think you know something but you don't know nothing
Everybody knows that death is larger than life

I saw them do War Pigs at the Beacon in April of '02. What an unbelievable show. It was of coarse the Deep End era and they had Jason Newsted as a guest. Kid Rock also came out with Newsted and they did 'Can't You See' followed by a killer 'Sweetleaf'. Then they did an awesome version of 'War Pigs'. This show was an amazing show. They had several guest bass players including, Dave Schools, Jason Newsted, Stefan Lessard and Andy Hess. Robert Randolph and Audley Freed were also guests. I wish they would put this show on Mule Tracks. 4/17/02 Sorry to get off point but that show was incredible. I wish I had gotten to see them play 'War Pigs' while Woody was around. The bass playing on that song on the 'With A Little Help From Our Friends' album is monsterous.

Peace

Pete

Last night and the night before..........

Down on MONKEY HILL

That's when you know you're in for it. Not so common right now, but when you catch it, it's on!
Plus its original, so that gets a plus in the vote column too.

Mother Earth is one I expect to see people shrieking/streaking for the back in panic.

Another one from the first album. Wow that was dark. Keep em coming. Later we'll do a poll for Warren's sweetest lyrics.

sweet of course:

you kissed me till my lips were sore

Let me take you down,
No need to suffer anymore
Wrap yourself, in the warmth of my arms,
And we’ll lie awake, ‘til sleep overtakes us
Can’t you see,
There’s no need to suffer anymore

I have told you - I won't watch you drown
I can't save you - but I will be around

I don't know about menacing, per se, but 30 days is pretty dirty. Any song w 'greasy whore' in it, let alone the rest of it.
Spanish Moon has a palpability to it as well, circulates among the the room. Great live songs.

When Woody was alive, Thorazine rattled in your chest ominously. I remember once at Red Rocks, where the back of the venue is usually free of heavy vibrations and from being seriously loud, Woody tore through one and I was walking from way back and it put me on my ass. Sometimes not just the song lyrically, so much sometimes as about how, who and where, imo.

The first line is from Slackjaw Jezebel hardly a sweet song. No need to suffer is a strange song. I'm not fully sure what it's about but it has a gentle feel to it.

So far it looks like Mother Earth in the lead in a potential upset.

Taking all things into account (lyrics, attitude, tone of voice, music, etc.) this one is by far most menacing. Hands down winner (as far as I'm concerned )

Time to Confess

Only the darkness can keep you warm
On an evil night like this
Are you looking for some one
To give your little arm a twist
Everybody needs some danger sometimes
I'm no different
Just think of me as your equal
I won't undress you
I won't hold you down
I won't stick a knife in your back
The way you did that clown

Can you feel it - can you taste it
Yeh, you must've seen it coming
Surely you could've guessed
The game is up
I'm gonna' take you down
No more crying
I think it's time to confess

You better pray for a miracle
Or you better pray this never ends
I, myself, can play the victim
I'll do whatever the part demands
You saw me watching you
You had time to run
Ain't it enough that you torture me
You had to go for his gun

Can you feel it - can you taste it
Yeah, you must've seen it coming
Surely you could've guessed
The game is up
I'm gonna' take you down
No more crying
I think it's time to confess

You won't see no bright lights burning
But you'll feel the heat
This is what happens
When strangers turn to lovers turn to enemies

Can you feel it - can you taste it
Don't look at me that way
With that blood on your dress
The game is up
I'm gonna' take you down
No more crying
I think it's time to confess

Maybe just ask how many of those who vote heard Monkey Hill live or something. Maybe I should post the words, or a live version of it....
I can't believe Blindman took it last time, good song, but not top of the menacing list...
