Can't hardly wait to go home and get the updates from Trade Deadline Day. Seeing as we don't get a holiday in Feb.( in most of Canada) maybe we could just have that day off...Was hoping Bill Guerin would go to Detroit but no such luck, the Sharks landed him. London native Jason Williams was dealt to the Hawks for Kyle Calder...bet he was really happy about that downward turn and the early tee times.

Well Jack, here's what your team did.

Acquired a guy who should have been banned from the league for his gutless performance a few years ago.

Red Wings Add Bertuzzi Before Deadline
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 3:00 PM EST
The Associated Press
By LARRY LAGE

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings acquired Todd Bertuzzi from Florida just before Tuesday's NHL trading deadline, adding the tough forward they wanted for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Panthers acquired forward Shawn Matthias and up to two conditional draft picks in the deal. If Bertuzzi signs with Detroit when he becomes a free agent after the season, the Red Wings will part with one pick this year and another next year.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Bertuzzi hasn't played since he had lower back surgery in November — after being sidelined for more than two weeks by a herniated disc. He has a goal and six assists in seven games after being acquired last summer in a trade that sent top goalie Roberto Luongo to Vancouver.

While playing for the Canucks in March 2004, Bertuzzi sucker-punched Colorado's Steve Moore in the head in one of hockey's ugliest episodes. He served a 17-month suspension.

On Monday night, the Red Wings acquired forward Kyle Calder in a three-team deal for forward Jason Williams.

Did Steve Moore ever play again?

Neither should Bertuzzi

Devils beat Pixberg 1-0.

Another shutout for the best goalie ever.

Brodeur Gets 12th Shutout As Devils Win
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 10:27 PM EST
The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Martin Brodeur made 31 saves for his league-leading 12th shutout of the season and Jamie Langenbrunner scored a power-play goal as the New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0 Thursday night.

Brodeur set a new career-high for shutouts in a season with the 92nd of his career. He's third on the career list, two behind George Hainesworth and 11 behind leader Terry Sawchuk.

It was the second time this season Brodeur blanked the Penguins, who fell 11 points behind the Atlantic Division-leading Devils by losing for the third time in four outings since having a 16-game point streak snapped.

New Jersey completed a 10-3 February with the victory, which fell on the day of the NHL's trade deadline.

The Penguins made five trades earlier in the day in an effort to close the gap with the Devils — and hold off teams chasing them to secure a playoff spot. The deals involved seven players and three draft picks.

The only player dealt from the NHL roster was Dominic Moore, but none of the new acquisitions — wingers Gary Roberts and Geoges Laraque, defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski or goalie Nolan Schaefer — was in uniform last night. Roberts, the most notable player Pittsburgh received, was in attendance.

Langenbrunner's goal came off a backhand pass from Scott Gomez 33 seconds into the second period. Langenbrunner scored his 21st of the season by ripping a slap shot from the high slot past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who made 24 saves. Patrik Elias picked up the second assist on the play.

The Devils, the league's stringiest team, shut down the Eastern Conference's third-highest scoring offense, allowing very few quality chances when playing five-on-five.

NHL scoring-leader Sidney Crosby and rookie star Evgeni Malkin each had seven-game point streaks stopped.

Malkin hit a post while skating fast down the left wing late in the second period, and Crosby and Mark Recchi had chances on a power play minutes later. Sergei Gonchar hit the post on a rifle of a shot from the right point in the opening minute of the final period, and Crosby had a chance at the rebound before he was tied up by Devils defenseman Colin White.

The teams will meet two more times this season, each coming in the next 15 days.

Notes: The Devils made one trade Tuesday, and that involved a draft pick and no new players coming to the team. The Penguins have the league's worst penalty kill on the road but rank fourth in home games. They came into Tuesday's game killing 87.5 of opponents' power plays at Mellon Arena and were successful in three of four against New Jersey. C Chris Thorburn was in uniform for Pittsburgh for the first time since Feb 4. Crosby is 19 years, 204 days old, was attempting to become youngest player to reach 200 career points. Wayne Gretzky was 19 years, 347 days old when he reached that milestone. Crosby has 199 career points.

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1
February 27, 2007

CHICAGO (AP) -Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals and Dominik Hasek made 24 saves to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night.

Kyle Calder had a goal and assist in his first game with Detroit, which is 10-2-2 in its last 14 games.

Johan Franzen also had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who improved to 5-0-0 against Chicago this season and are 11-1-1 against the Blackhawks over the past two years.

Hasek lost a bid for his seventh shutout with a minute left in the third period when Jeff Hamilton scored on a wrist shot.

The Blackhawks are 1-4-2 in their last seven games. Their leading scorer, right wing Martin Havlat, sat out with the flu.

Calder was acquired by Detroit on Monday in a three-way trade with Chicago and Philadelphia. He had played 59 games with the Flyers this season.

Jason Williams, who was sent to Chicago in the deal, was in the Blackhawks' lineup.

Chicago's Nikolai Khabibulin blocked 24 shots.

All right!!!!!

Det-riot beat Chicago, one of the league's top teams.

Heh heh.

Ryan Smyth traded??? Man I hate pro sports some times. Ryan was Mister OIler not Messier. This guy gave his all to the organization for the past 12 years. For what he did last year alone in the playoffs should have got him the $500000 to make him happy.

Fricken Leafs lose again!!!! Now trading Sundin wouldn't have hurt me a bit. I still remember the day I found out they got Sundin. I was working in a gold mine in the Amazon Basin. We got out of camp on Canada Day to Quito and found out from a call home the Leafs had traded Wendel for Sundin. I couldn't beleive it. Stunned on Canada Day of all days!!!! Wendel like Ryan gave the team everything through good and bad (alot of bad). Never liked Sundin, he just doesn't have it. Could have thrown McCabe in for bag of pucks as well.

Who's dissing Gilmore? Dougie is another heart guy. The guys like 5'8 150 lbs and he rose to every challenge thrown his way. And he always got the hot chicks. Go Leafs

Heh Heh Ron, no I only celebrate wins in their division against Nashville...the other teams are just filler.Take the 2 points though. Sure didn't figure Kenny Holland would go after Todd Bertuzzi and would have preferred Guerin or Smyth but I was not consulted. As far as Bertuzzi / Moore, I would agree that if Moore isn't playing neither should Bert, again Bettman and Colie Cambell didn't ask for my opinion.

I wasn't dissing Gilmour, just saying he was a shell of the player he was by the time he got to New Jersey.

As far as Smyth goes, that was a GREAT deal for Edmonton. The Oilers are not making the playoffs and Smyth is unrestricted, if they love each other so much he can resign with Edmonton this summer, and it will be an even better deal.

This guy just thinks it's no big deal.

From an article about Todd Bertuzzi joining the Det-riot Red Wings:

quote:
Bertuzzi also fielded questions about the March 2004 incident in which he sucker-punched Colorado's Steve Moore in one of hockey's ugliest episodes. He served a 17-month suspension after hitting Moore in the side of the head and driving him face-first into the ice, breaking three vertebrae in his neck, giving him a concussion and other injuries.

After pleading guilty to assaulting Moore, Bertuzzi was sentenced to probation and community service.

"The only people who talk about and discuss it is usually media and all that," Bertuzzi said Thursday. "You know, I gotta respect that you guys have a job to do and I understand it. ... I'm the same as everyone else. I just got issues that will take care of themselves. Like I said, it's not for Detroit to deal with. It's for me to deal with. It has no bearing on anything right now with me playing here."

Too bad the NHL didn't make more of an "issue" of it.

One of the ugliest events to show the whole freaking country how low the game can go.

He ended Moore's career, and his should have ended as well.

Once again, bettman has no balls.

For sure if he goes back to Edmonton it is a great deal for Edm. but it just doesn't seem right. And to trade to the Islanders of all teams. Thanks for coming out. Did Lowe do a good job shopping this guy around or was it a last minute deal getting what he could before the deadline.
Ryan Smyth was Oilers hockey what he did in the playoffs (Lowe even said last year he's an Oiler for life), Ryan Smyths house is painted Oilers blue and gold!!!!
He did everything for the betterment of the Oil and for them not to find 75 K or whatever the number is, its pathetic.
It hurts CDN's because he did so much over the years for CDN hockey. All of his appearances in the World Hockey Championships (never turned down an invite), Olympic Gold, Gold at the world Juniors he's done it all without whining about salary, Edm. lack of culture, etc. He even took paycuts to stick around in the bad years when everyone else jumped to other teams for more money.
It would have been nice to see hm retire a fulltime Oiler like Yzerman retired a Red Wing. His number should be in the rafters no matter what.
C'est la vie thats hockey Cheers

Avs Stay Hot on Road, Beat Chicago 6-1
Thursday, March 1, 2007 11:21 PM EST
The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Brad Richardson had a goal and an assist and Peter Budaj stopped 23 shots in the Colorado Avalanche's 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

Brett McLean, Tyler Arnason, Ken Klee, Mark Rycroft and Jeff Finger also scored for Colorado, which started a five-game road trip and won its second straight.

Richardson was credited with a goal in the first period following an unusual, delayed video review. The teams continued to skate for 1 minute, 54 seconds after Richardson slid and knocked the puck into the net at 7:43 because no whistle sounded and the puck bounded back into play.

Tuomo Ruutu scored for Chicago, which lost for the fifth time in six games. The Blackhawks are 1-5-2 in their past eight.

Hey Ron, Those words look familiar, lol?

Cam Janssens's hit on Kaberle gets him 3 games ? Kaberle shouldn't admire his passing but a 1.5 sec. gap between release to the hit is inexcusible. A guy who plays 2.5 - 3 mins. a night & possibly the most cement beteween the ears since Dave Semenko ,Janssen should be gone the same number of games Kaberle misses. The best part was the Leafs winning the game.

Sportscentre had a small clip of the sleepers who attend Jersey games, they must have showed at least 20 folks fast asleep at big $ prices. While discussuing the trap and the excitement of Devils hockey, ex-NHL coach Harry Neale compared it to watching a snake eat a mouse and opined a scarecrow would get 5 shuouts a year in NJ.

Jersey bashers come out of the woodwork if given the chance.

I'd say Janssen got off too lightly.

Problem is, if bettman starts punishing people properly now, he'll look even worse for letting all the prior BS go unpunished.

I wouldn't have argued at all if Cam got ten games.

I have yet to fall asleep watching a Devils game.

I have yet to see them play a trap when losing like the Boston game.

But Harry Neale is completely lost when it comes to hockey. Painful listening to him at times. Says so many foolish things throughout a game. Likely why his coaching career ended years ago.

CBC will figure out one day that Cole and Neale are hurting them. People have tired of the endless amount of Leafs pushed on them. They could be last place and still shown instead of two contending teams. Then Cole and Neale would try and convince us that it is the most exciting game to see. They will also try and convince us that they are impartial in calling the game.

Those two drive people away from the Leafs on a weekly basis.

Neale's not really there for astute commentary, he's the comedic relief..best line from HN -one year he said he couldn't get a parking spot in the Ex coach's lot at the Joe Detroit. It was full...or his description of Al Irafrate- best plumber in the league, smallest toolbox. Not a Cole fan anymore ,but he's definitely more there this year than last year's playoffs- I thought he was done.

While nobody wants to see anything like what happened to Kaberle in NJ, I find it real hard to look past the uniform he was wearing.

I'm not justifying the hit, it was late, but after years of watching the likes of Domi,Tucker,Corson,Belak,McCabe and any other goon or cheap-shot artist Pat Quinn could stick on the ice, I only have sympathy for Mr Kaberle himself.

If karma is paying the Leafs back for living by the sword for the last few years, so be it.

If anyone wants to compare a late hit in which the offender neither raised his arm or left his feet, to a Bertuzzi mugging, a Tie Domi unprovoked punch in the face, Darcy Tucker taking someones knees out,Gary Roberts high sticking someones face into the glass or a Shane Corson suckerpunch, they would only be proclaiming their own ignorance.
