Be careful what you wish for.

Those match ups haven't gone too well for Toronto, have they?

My favorite was the year Bobby Holik made Matts Sundin his bitch for the series.

Poor Matts looked ready to cry every time he went on the ice.

Heh heh.

Hey but after 40 years they still fill their arena every night (even in the black 80's), tough to do I hear in Jersey even during the playoffs. I know, call it blind love/faith but its love baby L-O-V-E.

After watching hi-lites of last nights games Leafs not on locally due to Calg at Buff I really believe there is way more fighting in NHL games this past mnth or so. I love it. I know some don't but their probably Senators fans and what can you say for them.
Anyone agree/disagree on number of fights lately.
Has Gary been listening? I doubt it but there seems to be more drama in games over the past couple of weeks then over the first few months of the season. I know games mean more now, but that shouldn't account for more scraps. Leafs

During the Sabres telecast last night, they were saying the NHL may get rid of the instigator rule.

About time.

Surprised somewhat that leafsfan would be happy to see more fights after one of his boys got taken off on a stretcher.

BTW, pretty good hockey fight.

Glad to see he wasn't seriously hurt.

Leafs' Newbury Taken Off on Stretcher
Sunday, February 11, 2007 12:21 AM EST
The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Maple Leafs rookie Kris Newbury was taken off the ice on a stretcher late in the third period after a fight with Pittsburgh's Ronald Petrovicky on Saturday night.

The Toronto forward took several punches to the head before falling to the ice. He stayed motionless for several minutes before taken being off.

Newbury was examined at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto after the Maple Leafs' 6-5 overtime loss to Pittsburgh and tests showed he didn't sustain any fractures to his skull or neck.

The center, who will turn 25 later this month, was conscious and alert as he was transported from the ice to the dressing room.

"A scary moment," Maple Leafs forward Boyd Devereaux said.

Four seconds after Pittsburgh's Maxim Talbot scored to make it 5-5, Newbury and Petrovicky squared off at center ice. Petrovicky caught Newbury with a hard punch, and Newbury's helmet came off. When he fell back, he struck his head on the ice and was knocked out.

"We started fighting and he fell on his head pretty bad so, you know, sorry, but that's part of the game," Petrovicky said. "Hopefully he'll be OK.

Newbury lay motionless for 30 seconds before awakening just as Toronto's training staff began treating him. A large pool of blood collected under his head and he was strapped to a board and taken off the ice.

"You don't want to see that, a lot of blood on the ice," said Petrovicky, who was sitting in the penalty box when the stretcher was brought out.

Newbury's teammates were visibly worried during the game, but seemed somewhat relieved once it was over.

"When someone is down like that and you see there's almost blood coming out of his ear, it's always dangerous," captain Mats Sundin said. "But I heard he was moving around ... and he was conscious on the stretcher and could talk, so hopefully he'll be fine."

You don't see guys in other sports doing this:

quote:
Devils' Madden Hit in Face With Puck
Sunday, February 11, 2007 7:25 PM EST
The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) New Jersey center John Madden missed the final 6:28 of the first period Sunday after being hit by a shot and cut on the right side of his face in the Devils' 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.

Madden received an undisclosed number of stitches and played the final two periods wearing a visor on his helmet. He had a nasty gash below his eye and his face was badly swollen and black and blue after the game. Droplets of blood dripped occasionally from his nose as he talked to reporters.

"I have seen guys take a lot worse shots than this and get back out there," Madden said. "That's the way the game is played."

Madden felt he was hurt worse when he hit by a puck shot by New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek in another season.

"I was chasing down an icing and I was 15 or 20 feet behind him and he turned around and shot it out of the zone and it hit me right in the face," said Madden, one of the NHL's top defensive forwards.

Madden even downplayed the jagged ugly gash on his face Sunday.

"The gash was nothing, it was just a big cut," Madden said. "It's like getting cut with a knife or something like that. Bone wasn't involved. You know, force was involved. It caught me pretty clean. It looked worse than it was."

Madden was hurt when he put his stick down to deflect a power-play shot by Lightning forward Eric Perrin. The shot deflected and the puck struck him in the face and opened a cut.

Madden went down immediately to the ice, holding his face. He stayed down for about 20 seconds and skated off, helped initially by a Devils trainer and then referee Kerry Fraser and linemate Jay Pandolfo.

Yep sad for Newbury, in the paper here they said he knocked his head on the ice. To me it looked like he tried to hit his opponents hand with the side of his head really hard.

Fightings been in the gamer forever. Its great for the fans, rivalries etc. This would never happen but take car crashes out of Nascar and I think interest might drop off a little.

Wade Belak (fourth liner for Toronto along with Newbury) after he saw Newbury was alright joked with him that Newbury had messed up one of the few shifts they get.

Madden is awesome (did I say that). Every team needs grit like that guy has. I think it is one of Toronto's failings that they don't have a guy like Madden running around taking punishnment and dishing it out. Makes everyone on the bench step up.

Anybody catch the Ray Emery shot to the head with his stick that got him a 3 gamer? He said" he wasn't rying to hurt anybody", well anybody I hit in the face with a goalie stick usually disagreed...

Wings and Flyers on TV tonight. They are going to honour Keith Primeau at the game and had a nice portrait with him in both uniforms. Waiting to see if Forsberg will end up with the Wings as his choice is a Western team, The Wings have cap room with Hasek & Chelios taking deferred $$ but it's a crap shoot with his ankle & free agency at the end of the year.

Hasek's day to day.Ut Oh. Couple of goalies nobody ever heard of tonight,McDonald got his first NHL win last night vs. Flames. Niklas Lidstrom should get his 200th. goal tonight after having 3 goals given to other Wings after been credited to him.

Emery's a hot head but the way they are running goalies these days they have to defend themselves. Rolson got ran over badly twice last night. I know they showed hi-lites on HNIC of Emery but can't remeber it being Billy Smith like.

Hey here we go again Jack, Detroit on TSN AGAIN. Man I'm sure there are more national Red Wings games on TSN then any of the other CDN teams. Brutal, Go Old Vienna

How big a gamble is Peter Forsberg???

When healthy, he's the best.

Last week I saw him fall on his face because his foot wasn't going in the right direction.

Do you roll the dice and take him if you have cap room?

I honestly don't know what I'd do.

Those poor Senator fans. They have to watch McGrattan beat up some poor Leaf time time again. Poor Belak always spends the fights just trying to stay out of reach.

OUCH. lose 6-1 to the worst team inthe league. OUCH, only game last night, skipped Sportscentre this morning.

TSN is making up for LeafsTV and CBC who only show Leafs games- SW Ontario has as many Wings fans as Leafs fans and are glad of them showing the games. Bonus with NBC showing Detroit weekend games on cable.

Emery is a hothead and still holds the AHL record pm's for goalies in one season at 72. There's lots of ways to get guys back other than chopping them in the face with your stick. He thinks 3 games is harsh, what a maroon.

He plays for the sens what do you expect? NHL is too light on doling out time for idiots like him.

He should have dropped the gloves. A blocker to the puss can be a bit more painful then a fist or a stick.

Isles at Leafs, big game for both tonight. Of course its only on TSN Ontario not nationwide like them stinkin dead things

Didn't want to interrupt the thread or anything, just wanted to say:
Hail to the Chief.
The Bruins honored John "Chief" Bucyk before tonight's game for 50 years of being with the team, including 21 as a player -- he and Raymond Bourque are tied in that area -- a great player and, as was pointed out several times, a greater guy -- does a lot of charity work and is the driving force behind the Bruins alumni games.
Orr and Esposito were the stars of the "Big Bad Bruins" glory years (1967-72), but the leader on and off the ice was their captain -- the Chief.

You named your son The Turk? ( )
Your son Derek has a great name Ron
Actually Derek Sanderson was among those on the ice tonight -- so was Pie McKenzie & Don Marcotte.
That line of Bucyk, McKenzie & Fred Stanfield was a thing of beauty to watch.

Two years ago we were coming home from practice.

Stopped at a gas station/convenience store for snacks.

Kid behind the counter has a name tag that says "Derek".

My son tells him that's his name too.

Clerk says "my dad named me after some hockey player".

We both burst out laughing like loons.

After we stopped laughing, we let him in on the joke, and Derek gave him a brief history of "that hockey player".

Youch, leafs lose another but still gain a point but Carolina wins. Two weeks until trade deadline. Gotta figure the Sundin trade watch is going to heat up. Thankfully Calgary won, bad night all around for Canada's teams. Leafs
