Bob has a great story about how he got a Telecaster.

...Man, I have an eerie resemblance to Bob1954. ...Hey Bob, get your own face!

Bob Weir? Yeah, I like him - I'm a Deadhead...what's not to like?

Good singer (great at times), a KILLER rhythm guitar player, great arranger of music and a cool stage presence. He provided the perfect colour and musical landscape to allow Jerry to do what he did - weaving in and out of Bob's angular rhythms, grooves and sometimes unconventional time signatures. He and Jerry were the perfect yin and yang in a music sense. I expect there to be a lot of bashing here especially by non-Deadheads or even Dead haters...I don't care. Bob is cool in my book. BY the way Peachheads, Duane loved him...I'll have to dig up the quote somehwere about some nice things Duane said about Bobby. I guess yo can Bash away if it makes you feel good...but Bob is an ACE to me.

Peace

Having first seen the Dead in 1972, and eventually some 130 times, I have some input on this subject..Weir was a valuable member of the band, although he was never really one of my favorites..But he did have is role..Early on, I enjoyed many of his tunes; Playin' In The Band, Samson and Delilah, Cassidy, Minglewood Blues (not New New MB's). What I didn't like was this period where he thought he was some sort of a "heart throbe" or something, when he would fling his head and hair back, and let out these almost intorlerable yelps, almost like another dreadful one: Donna. Despite my feelings about Weir he was an integral part of the band and the Dead wouldn't have been the Dead without him..They all brought something different to the band..I'm not a muscian, I'm just in to music, therefore I am not one to judge his muscianship..I must have somewhat enjoyed it having gone to so many shows..

Wonder what the next question from "allmanfanfromsweden" is going to be? Maybe "Gregg Allman's ponytail, lose or braided, which looks cooler?"

I love em. Most of my fav Dead tunes are Weir's.

I hear him once in a while on XM. He's playing an acoustic set. I wish I could get a copy because it is one of my favorite versions of Jack Straw and Ashes & Glass.

I agree with all of this. Just imagine being a severly dislexic kid, you really don't know how to play guitar that well yet, the roadies are dosing you incessently because they think you are funny when you are tripping, and all the while you are trying to play rhythm guitar standing between Garcia and Lesh, two of the most unconventional players around. can you imagine learning to play rhythm guitar with Lesh as the bass player? Its a wonder he didn't call it quits after a few months.

Funny story, a few years back I was bartending at a place called Tobacco Road (now closed unfortunately)in NYC. They had live music and Johnny Neel took a liking to the owner so he played there quite a bit. We were down in the green room one night and JOhnny Neel was playing with Matt Abts in a thing called X2. DJ Logic was also in the house, and at the time had been touring with Weir. One thing leads to another and we start talking about Weir. Johnny starts bad mouthing him up and down about his playing, as well as Dj Logic, who jsut happens to be sitting right next to him, but he has no idea because Johnny is blind. Johnny claims, "I don't know anything about that rap music, maybe my daughter knows who this DJ is. And Weir, that guy, all he does is plays the same chord over and over again." Someone then fills in Johnny that DJ is sitting right next to him. He says, "Ah, my apologies, I'm just rock n roll and funk and soul. Maybe my daughter knows who you are, she's into all that rap **** ." Anyway, they all started laughing and Johnny invited DJ Logic to play with him upstairs. It actually turned into a very cool jam with Johnny, Matt, DJ Logic, and if I recall correctly I think Danny Louis was there too. It turned into one big improv.

Anyway, I guess the point is, everyone feels differently about Weir. Personally, I think he does some pretty amazing stuff.

Now we're getting to the heart of the matter. I think Butch should let his hair grow out...

Hate to hijack...

Jim,

Is Tobacco Road that bar in NYC that is owned by some guys who went to UNC? I heard about it, if this i the bar I'm thinking about. A lot of ACC'ers who migrate to NYC hang out there.

Since I'm only a "vintage" dead fan, and I don't know anything Weir does anymore, i probably have a biased opinion. He was frustrating for me to watch from mid 70's on. He did some album I even threw out.... Bobbie tries to be Boz Scaggs or something..... But I do have my treasured Ace album on CD replacing the vinyl I had in 72 or 3 and had stolen. anybody that says Bobby sucks likely has never seriously listened to that album in it's entirety. But, he never topped that one.

Great Bobby:

Cassidy studio
Me and My Uncle from GD 71 live
Jack Straw Europe 72
Looks Like Rain studio
Sugar Magnolia studio
and without him Truckin' would not have been the anthem for many in the good ole daze

and I can play Goin' Down The Road Feelin' bad from 71 GD live endlessly.....

He's alright by me. :-) He invites Warren to play with him:

at events like this.

Now if he and Phil could each give up a little control, maybe the Dead could make some more music together.

Cause Bob invited Warren to play at this, I'm gonna give Rat Dog another try. (I'm sure Bob is thrilled at that news. LOL) I saw them last four years ago, so I know they are much more connected musically now

i think Ratdog has become a tight and terrific band and i think they are one of the better touring jambands around....Weir may or may not be a great guitar player or great singer but he has written a ton of great songs,he puts on great long show and it is great fun to see him...btw i will be there to see a couple of his shows in march at the beacon as a warmup to rhe Allmans...

Don't care for BW at all. His vocals are weak and I find him generally annoying. Hell of a slide player though

There were some great Bob Weir Band shows in the 70's , pretty energetic. And I'm not too sure what i think of "Heaven Help the fool". I've seen Ratdog a few times, Mark Karan is a lovely guy and a great player and Kenny Brooks is about one of two sax players i actually really like. And Lane is a grand drummer. Slylvester is a great improvement over Waserman in the band context ... not bad for an Englisher! Although, I've seen Weir having to get reminders for his lyrics from the crowd, and i don't like that guitar sound .

As for Dead days ............. "Weather Report Suite" . ..... love it (or loved it) , Weir seemed his most prominent during the 90's .... Picasso Moon, Hell in a bucket ........... but those feckin cut-offs! my god !! That combined with Lesh in his shorts and odd socks ....... .............................................................. run away!!!!

Didn't like that business about putting Welnick in a cab under the name of Smith and sending him on his own to hospital after an overdose. Sucked if true.
