Good Friday to my International Brothers & Sisters!

Bro Danis, where are you?

Still alive and well, but very busy with work for the past month or so. I guess that's the price to pay for taking a 3 week vacation/motorbike tour to the Swiss Alpes.

But I am saving some energy for Derek & the band.

Zeka, have you made travelling & accomodation arrangements yet?

It was so good to see you in Novisad bro, albeit for a short time. Hope to see you again in Skopje, and this time we gonna have those beers (lots of them, as the show starts quite late).

Colin, how was the show bro? Please tell.

Happy weekend to all!

-Danis

Danis, nice to "see" you!

And hello to all!

The weather here in Finland is awful at the moment, temperature dropped down a few degrees near 0 degr. Celsius and wet snow has been falling all day long... Fortunately this is only temporary - so said the wise weather peolple - and in a couple of days it will be a little warmer and sunnier (I do hope so!)

Have a nice weekend!

Apologies for taking so long to post this, but I have been away on business for a few days.

Last Thursday (10/11/07) I had the pleasure of attending the Derek Trucks Band show at the Carling Academy in Islington (London – UK). The evening started off well with a pre-show gathering of a few friends in a local hostelry nearby to the venue. It was particularly great to see Alan (alans) who had travelled all the way down from Edinburgh in Scotland, Mike (peach-head) who had travelled a long way from the North of England, and Jim (JimRudge) who had come a fair distance across from the West of England, and also others more local to the London area like Barry (Hippy69), Gordon (Shavian) and Dave (scotiadave). It was also a great pleasure to meet a few new faces who lurk around this site but don’t tend to post, especially Martin who is an avid collector of show recordings.

Anyway, after a curry and a few brews we made our way up the street to the venue in eager anticipation. I had thoroughly enjoyed the show that the dTb had put on last year on their first visit to England, but was secretly hoping for a bit more of a blues content to the set list this time around, as the previous show had pretty much been a “Songlines Live” gig (not that there was anything wrong with that, far from it).

As the first few bars of the first song “44 Blues” struck up, I knew I was going to be in luck. An excellent version of a tune I had only previously heard covered by the ABB, and despite some initial problems with the sound quality it was a nice rendition by Mike Mattison. This was followed by a couple of tracks from Songlines, “Volunteered Slavery” & “All I Do”, which contrasted in style nicely before my second bluesy treat of the evening “Leavin' Trunk”. Then came another joy, the King Curtis tune “Soul Serenade” which Derek played beautifully. We were then treated to a couple of new tunes to the repertoire, “Get Out Of My Life” and “I Know”, which really extended the variety of musical styles that we have come to know and love of the dTb. More such exhibitionism was in store with “Majhoun” and its usual segue into “Greensleeves”. But then came a real piece-de-resistance as South African Singer Vusi Mahlasela was welcomed onto the stage, and what followed was an outstanding version of “Kam-ma-lay”, complete with a little African dance interlude performed by Vusi and Count M'Butu. The band were all smiles and were really at the top of their game, absolutely wonderful stuff!!! After this extravaganza came “Sailing On”, not actually one of my favourites so I took advantage and had a quick and much needed comfort break, before the set was finished off with another nice Mike Mattison rendition of “I Wish I Knew”.

I have to say that I was a little disappointed that this was the end of the set after only 1 hour and 20 minutes, however, I was somewhat appeased when they came out and played another 20 minutes in the form of a couple of encores. The first was my final bluesy treat of the evening, “Key To The Highway”, a real old favourite of mine, and second and sadly finally “Freddie's Dead” which finally showcased the bands virtuosity.

This was only the second trip that the dTb have made to our shores, but I sure hope it won’t be the last. I took a friend along with me who had never heard of the dTb before and he is an immediate convert and can’t wait to see them again. All in all an excellent night, now all I need is a certain gentleman who taped the show to get in touch with me and my joy will be complete.

Colin, thanks for your great report/review!

Leavin' Trunk was a highlight for me at the Toronto show too.

Glad you had such a nice time.

Now I saw that. What to say? It is not funny, it is sad. I was about 2 m from the stage and in that moment wanted to take that guitar from Toni and play (I'm sure much, much better). Have you seen Derek's face? Ha-ha!
Yes, I've got Derek's signature at my ticket (I was like a teenager, but it is nice thing to have some memory from Skopje and 2.5 hours of the greatest music).
See you around!

Zeka, FYI, three more YouTube videos of your show have been added to that thread. The best {for sound etc.} is the Crow Jane vid. And Toni is nowhere to be seen in those three videos.

Hey, I've got their signatures too on Toronto set lists from years ago {one framed and faded in my kitchen--except for Derek's sig} and Sandy got the whole band to sign his dTb shirt this summer in Toronto. We understand where you are coming from Zeka.

Hiya guys, I'm doing OK except I was hit by a terrible news. There has been a shoot-out at a junior high in a little village of Jokela and by the account of varying sources there has been 3-7 deaths, one of the victims being female headmaster of the school... And this village of Jokela is situated 11 kilometers (roughly 7 miles) from Hyvinkaa where I live. Some wounded and injured people has been transferred to Hyvinkaa General Hospital for treatment...

I can't believe THIS s**t is happening here, in Finland!

Hi Petri, yes, Sandy and I thought of you as soon as we heard the news. So sorry to hear of the tragedy. We had a similar incident happen at a University in Montreal a number of years ago where a number of women were shot to death. Unfortunately this sh!t happens everywhere... All the best to you and your countrymen and women. I remember and know how it feels.
{It must be particularly frightening and shocking for you because of the close proximity to where you live.}

BTW, did you get the package I sent you? Just want to make sure it got there ok.

Latest update:
8 dead by the gun-firing lunatic, 5 boys, 2 girls and the principal of the school... Killer shot himself in the head and is in a critical state in a hospital... All this result of a few minutes shooting... Killer is a 18-year-old pupil from the same school and was reportedly a loner who idolised Hitler, Stalin and darwinism.

Tomorrow the flags will be at half-mast here in Finland...

I hope you pay some respect to the victims and their families in your heart. Thanks...

Kim, thank you for the kind words... This is devastating...
And yes, I got you package, million thanks! Sorry that I haven't written you earlier but an e-mail is coming to you real soon... I owe you that...

Good morning my friends!

First of all, thanks for your kind thoughts and sympathy for the victims of Jokela High massacre and their families... This topic has been all over the place here and has raised many questions and discussions... he overall feeling is disbelief, how can this happen here?

OK, to lighter things: it's raining and it's cold...

Hello my international friends!

Oops, I had a longer abscence than I meant to... Anyway, normal hassles here, work and studies plus kids and me having a stomach flu, breuuuch... Everything's back to normal by now.

The weather continues being gray and wet around this part of the globe.

Take care!
