Van Halen `jumps' into Rock hall

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith.

A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

Wonder if all the members of Van Halen will be there and who will play on stage together. It would truely be wrong for them not to have Micheal Anthony play with them on this occasion. He has been with them since the beginning. I'm betting that they won't allow Sammy Hagar to take part and who knows about Roth. Maybe they will pull a Black Sabbath and not play. Should be a fun soap opera to watch.

Deep Purple should certainly be in there. King Crimson also.

I fear that someone who knows music just from MTV is taking over the choice of inductees!

Ooohh! Dave, Eddie, Alex and Michael on the same stage together? Would Sammy be invited? He was in the band longer than Dave....Let the pyrotechnics of ego and resentment begin!!

How dare you!

Don't push him cause he's close to the edge.....your guess is as good as mine. I'm more worthy to join the RnR HOF than he or his "band" mates. If you want to start a rap HOF, go for it, but he doesn't belong and is a complete and utter joke.

Wow, what an amazingly lackluster set of nominees. REM blows, Alice Cooper's "Killer" album is better and more important than all the Van Halen albums combined, I like Grandmaster Flash but he had two hit songs, Patti Smith was marginal at best, etc. This is all Jan Wenner's bullsh*t, ****-sucking influence. I agree with Grand Funk and Deep Purple as well. I mean, what the hell - why don't we throw Leo Sayer in there, for crying out loud.

And Tom Dowd.

Well, they're touring next summer with DLR, absent some sort of internal blow-up (which might be more likely than not). But that's already decided, with Eddie's 15 year old son Wolfgang on bass, so I imagine you'll at least see those 4 performing at the induction ceremony. If you check the RRHOF web-site, the inductees for VH are Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth (no Gary Cherone, thank God). So Sammy is included and invited to be there, as is Mikey. What will be interesting is to see whether Sammy and Mikey bother going, given the treatment they received from Eddie. I'd love to see all five of them there on stage, and my bet would be on DLR winning any fight given his martial arts expertise and Sammy's tequila-induced chubbiness.
