Everyone here knows my feelings on Dickey. I love the guy like an Uncle, and he's been my idol for years. I think the world of him even though I don't know him personally...

That being said, I have a bit of into (not at all to be takes as gospel) that might shed some light on the situation.

Last night, I auditioned a singer at my new apt. She was God-awful, but that's besides the point. I put on "Hittin' the Note" just because I couldn't bear to hear her sing anymore, and we got to talking about the Allmans... She told me that she took a law class at NYU that was taught by a lawyer who was involved in the whole Dickey vs. the Allmans stuff. She told me that the big reason why he was kicked out of the band was that he chased Gregg down with either a gun or a knife and threatened to kill him. That's why it was so abrupt and why it's almost beyond repair.

Now, like I said, this is going on her world only, and I take it with a grain of salt, since she didn't remember some important facts that someone with inside info should know.

Still, has anyone else heard something like this? Could this be the main reason? If it is, then I wonder if it confirms my suspicion that "Firing Line" was indeed written about Dickey. Look at some of the lyrics:

"I've known you since you've been born, raisin' hell even as a child
nothing's changed since that day, you're still out running wild
that hell hound on your trail is getting closer with every passing mile
hey now baby, don't you think it's high time
to change your life's direction, and get off the firing line"

Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but, long before this awful singer told me this awful story, I had a hunch that it might a veiled song about Dickey. Now, it might make more sense...

Anyone?

I heard it was an axe....

and that Dickey was screaming....

"All Rehearsals and no shows make Dick a dull boy"

and he kept shouting it over and over.........

Then these aliens with one big eye.........

Another thing I don't like to talk about here is my connections to the band, so I won't, but let me say. . . That is an exaggeration of the truth, or at least comes out sounding the wrong way. However, sometimes it's best not to know the truth and just be happy that both parties are still available to us in some form. I'm a long time fan and I don't hold any opinion leaning one way or the other on this situation, but I do feel the split was not only necessary, but a long time coming and a very positive thing for both parties, REGARDLESS of how much negativity has come out of it from the fans.

Kenny, you've done it again, dude! Made me laugh out loud and have to explain this "place" to a co-worker..... Thanks, man! Made my day brighter!

On the story, I would think a lawyer wouldn't be allowed to give out details like that, especially to a classroom full of people. Something about client confidentallity.... but ya never know, huh?

How about this can o' worms? (hee hee).....if it were true, could Gregg overpower Dickey, now that he's in better shape or would Dickey kick his arse? LOL!

Hmm. This is pretty interesting, actually. Unfortunately, there's really no way to find out if it's true. I can offer this, though. I was lucky enough to score a ticket in the pit at the third of the three dates at the Wiltern last June (the seats @ the 1st 2 shows were good too, but if you've never been in the pit, find a way). Anyway, this short little super-fan sort of guy was right next to me, and he obviously had some strong feelings about the whole split situation. He said that it all had to do with Dickey's typical unruly, drunken behavior, just as many problems of the past came about. Now this is the interesting part. He claimed (and maybe this is old news, but it was news to me) that when Warren left the first time in 95 or 96, it was because Dickey had attacked him, and basically punched him out. I'm sure Warren can take care of Warren, but I also would imagine his doing the smart thing and turning the other cheek, finally saying "Are you done? Good. Eff you and your band, I quit." Anyway, I had a little time on my hands, and I wanted to see if this had ever been brought up here on the forum in the past.

That IS news to me. From what I gather, Dickey and Warren still get along well, and I think they even jammed together a bit last year. If Dickey did punch him out, I can't imagine Warren being able to even look at him, much less play with him.

I've heard things here and there for quite a while about fights - not necessarily between Dickey and Warren, but of things getting nasty. Red Dog told a similar story... point is, I don't know what happened, but I'm sure some things have gone down that we'd rather not know about. I'm sure personal issues had as much to do with Dickey's exit as musical ones did, but beyond that, we kind of get into the Twilight Zone, I think. On another note, I'm glad this thread is silly instead of super-bitter like it might've been a year or two ago.

HI-YAAH!!!!

There was no issue between Dickey & Warren. Just Dickey & Gregg. Warren & Dickey still get along fine.

Sometimes people are more forgiving of alcoholics and their actions during rages....but after a while, they finally say Eff-it and quit excusing their behavior. Who knows?

Yeah, I think it was Cliff's final decision after much consultation and counseling with band members, that it would be best to send a fax to Dickey stating that his services were no longer required.... Cliff....the man with the iron fist! LOL! I did hear that he made a point to mention in the fax message that it was going to hurt him more than it would Dickey.

IMHO, Who cares ! Let's enjoy the old and new music together...Dickey is great, Warren is great, Derek is great...Dickey is no longer in the band...I could care less the reason Dickey was dismissed from the band..
