As I predicted, the magazine dept. gave me the advance copy of "Hitting the Note" I hopes they would. I didn't get it until 6:00pm last night, so I had to sit on an hour train ride going through the agony of having the new album, and not having anything to play it on. I got home and threw it in and I've been on cloud 9 ever since. Simply put, it's awesome. I don't like to throw that word around too losely, but it really fits in this case. It's just awesome.

If anyone has any Q's, feel free to ask!

So, is the track listing just as you expected it? How about the length of each song? Is it awesome like I've heard some people say it is?

sbowen - A dumb argument it was. No hard feelings at all!

As for the record, the track listing is as follows (with song lengths!):
1) Firing Line (5:08)
2) High Cost of Low Living (7:46)
3) Desdemona (9:15)
4) Woman Across the River (5:45)
5) Old Before My Time (5:18)
6) Who To Believe (5:35)
7) Maydell (4:28)
8) Rockin' Horse (7:22)
9) Heart of Stone (4:52)
10) Instrumental Illness (12:03)
11) Old Friend (6:05)

Let me say this:
While we all expected "Desdemona", "High Cost", "Firing Line" and "Old Before My Time" to be the core of the record, the songs that nobody really talks about too much ("Heart of Stone", "Maydell" and "Who To Believe") are as scorching as anying on the record. "Who To Believe", in particular, is just amazing. It works so much better on record than it does live.

In fact, what's amazing about this album is that, save maybe "Desdemona", every single song sounds 10X better than they did on stage. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the production (which is amazing... The drums are spread out so perfectly), but it's also the clarity of the performances. Gregg's voice isn't only high in the mix, but you can hear what he's saying, and he sings everything with a great conviction.

Another thing that strikes me is how much Derek blows Warren away on this record. Normally, Warren can at least hold his own (if not blow Derek away altogether), but on this record, it's Derek's show. He's featured in all the album's key moments, and he turns "Instrumental Illness, which is a melodically weak instrumental, and turns it into a tour de force. His solo on that song probably ranks as a top 5 all time ABB solo, right after Dickey's "Jessica", Duane's "Dreams" and Warren's "Seven Turns"...

Gregg plays nothing but organ on the whole album, except for a tasty bit of clavi that he plays at the end of "Firing Line'... The clavi (or a distorted Rhodes) just smokes...

The copy I have doesn't have lyrics, but it's not the full package. It's the advanced copy, so it's just the CD and the track listing...

If the length of the songs are correct, it would be about 72 minutes of music
give or take, thats a lot of mileage for a studio disc. Can't wait to get me one!

Well I guess I better throw another couple of taters in the crock pot then!

BTW advanced copies are not always acurate with track times. They may be different on the CD when it comes out.

Sounds wonderful. I'm happy for you, Frank.
I know a bunch of people have talked about Heart of Stone not being the strongest thing on the album, but I like what the ABB has done with it... and the snippet I heard on BarnesandNoble.com DID sound very good. So I'm glad to know that the songs we weren't expecting as much from have turned out well.
Can't wait to hear the solo on Instrumental Illness, if it's that good!

Firing Line has been getting PLENTY of airplay in the tri-state area. I think I hear it played 2-4 times a day.

What about the electric piano solo on Desdemona? Where's Chuck Leavell when you need him?

Well, Frank, I refrained from saying I told you so on the Derek thread, so here goes: I TOLD YOU SO!

Seriously, I'm glad you got to hear it. You probably have a more recent version than I do, it sounds like some of the track times are different. The one thing I would agree with heartily is that Derek takes Instrumental Illness to a whole new level! Light years beyond even the best live versions I've heard.

I know that a lot of people have been skeptical when I have been raving about how good Hittin The Note is, but everyone will soon know what Frank and I are talking about
