My youngest daughter is a freshman in high school and this is the story of two her classmates and band members. They live about a mile from us.

Keep the families in your thoughts and prayers....

Terrible news John
Best of healing vibes to those families and to your girls and all the other classmates that will be impacted by this tragedy.
I have heard so many sad stories this holiday season that it's almost tough to count my blessings and feel good about them.

Sh!t. That really puts things in perspective, if you think you're having a bad day or whatever. Life is so precious. Terrible tragedy.

Tragic indeed. But how dumb of statement is this:
Authorities don't know what the boys were doing in the pit, the coroner said.

Hmmmm let me guess. Ah! They where playing.

Even the geniuses can't realize this is a haven for young teen boys to play in.

Some interesting info I found on the web that I have known about after attending a trench collapse class years ago.

Soil is Heavy
A cube of soil measuring 1 ft. on a side weighs around 100 lb. A cubic yard of soil contains 27 of these, or 2700 lbs. total. This weighs about as much as a mid-sized automobile. A trench wall collapse might contain 3 to 5 cubic yards of soil, weighing from 8,000 to 14,000 lbs.

A person buried under only a couple of feet of soil would experience enough pressure on the chest area to prevent their lungs from expanding. Suffocation would take place within about 3 minutes. Even if the person is rescued in time, the heavy soil loads are likely to inflict serious internal injuries. A person buried in earth as high as his diaphragm, would not be able to dig himself out, and his chances of survival are low. If the face is even partially covered, death is almost certain.

John, sorry to hear about your daughter's classmates - prayers going out to their families ... hardest thing in the world to loose a child. Also saying a prayer for your daughter as I've seen first hand how difficult loosing a friend to sudden tragedy can be for a young one.

Having been involved in the site work industry for the last 26 years, I am somewhat familiar with OSHA requirements for trenching and banking. Basically, for soils that are non-cohesive, like sands or sandy clays, you have to have a 2:1 slope for trenches that are four feet deep or deeper. (For every foot of depth dug, you have to bank back two feet. That way, if there is a cave in, the people in the trench have a much better chance of not being covered up.) Cohesive soils, like fat clays, or other soils that aren't likely to "sluff," you can bank on a 1:1 slope. I forget what the depth requirement is for a trench box, but five feet and deeper rings a bell. Someone on the excavation team has to be OSHA trained and certified as a "competent person" to determine the soil's characteristics and make the calls regarding the banking of the slopes. The thing is, in this instance, this was on private property. From what I gather, it wasn't a public borrow area and it was being used by the property owner, who I believe was one of the victim's families.

Very sad situation, as now the land owner/family member who owned the property will have to live with wondering if there was more he could have done to make the excavation site safer and prevented these two deaths.

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes...

My daughter has seen a lot of death in our family, however, she has not had someone this close to hear age die. She is really having a rough time.....

And I know the families of the two young men are inconsolable at this time...
