If you had 100 grand what band would you hire for the night? My college, W&L, has a Fancy Dress Ball every year. Most kids there have way more money than I do (or I'd be bragging about my '59 Les Paul...) so they spend a whole lot on this thing. Since this year is the 100th anniversary they are alloting 100,000 dollars for the band alone...Its still up in the air as to who. I'm very lost as to who i'd get, aside from obviously the DTB or Mule (sorry Oteil, but I don't like your band as much as those two), but I hear the ABB are more than that...realistically I was thinking John Mayer, everyone seems to love him...If you were in charge what band (still alive and all...like really, for this spring) would you hire?

Robert Randolph & the Family Band

They played at Vanderbilt University's spring festival 2 years ago. They might fit your budget, plus they'd get people up and moving for sure.

I know who I would get if it was just me, but something like a "College Ball" one would have to take into account the musical taste of most of the student body, who's taste in music would probably be to mainstream for bands like dTb and the Mule. Robert Randolph, already mentioned, would probably work. Also, someone along the lines of Susan Tedeschi or Los Lonely Boys, might work. Actually for a "College Ball" if you want to do something a little different but still cool, and hip, the Brian Setzer Orchestra might be fun to have.

I think you are overestimating what you could get dTb for. I know FOR A FACT they played Augusta, GA at the Imperial Theater in January 2005 for $5000. I know their star is rising, and I'm sure their contract price is as well, but for $100,000, you should be able get dTb, Gov't Mule AND Oteil and the Peacemakers.

dTb
Mule

That would be special!

For a more mainstream audience I would go with John Mayer. Even if he's not my favorite, I'm sure he would put on a great show. He is a fine guitar player and has a good band too. I think you had the right idea.

About a year or so ago, a link was circulating around that listed a particular band's fee for a performance. it was a very interesting read. Has anyone seen that around, or know of the link?

Sweet

100 grand might not quite cut it for John Mayer. For that you could get Mule,DTB,Los Lobos,Phil Lesh and Friends and still have money left over if that tells you anything.
