I bought this C.D. used and its a great tribute album from 1991 to the grateful dead. it really is a forgotten gem. dr. john does an incredible job with "deal" and elvis costello w/ a few of elvis presleys sidemen do a fine job on "ship of fools" james burton chanelling jerry garcia, but also being james burton!, same with jerry sheff on bass channeling phil lesh.

Totally agree on Los Lobos Bertha - have seen them live a few times (once with the Dead) and they pulled this one out and did amazing job each time!

ok whenever i hear the "los lobos does bertha" i have to recant this story:

Further Festival, 1996. the first Further. pretty much my first festival. first time seeing any form of the dead. first time seeing Hot Tuna as well, one of my favorites of all time.

Hurricane Bertha was bearing down on the ECenter in Camden, NJ. we area ll huddled on the lawn, under plastic - the storm is mondo INTENSE.

Los Lobos comes out, with Jorma and a few others and does "Bertha". (i'm getting goosepimples thinking about it). The freaking sun broke through the clouds for about a minute, it stopped raining.......

and this poor white girl from Cape May finally "GOT IT". The sun shined, the clouds parted, angels sang. i cried.

i guess you can say I became "Deadicated" that day.

now i gotta get that disk.

peace out,
lin

BERTHA DONT YOU COME AROUND HERE, ANYMORE!!!

Great story, Linnie! I've had a few of those live musical experiences myself - the ones that are almost religious in nature. I was lucky to catch this version of Further with Hot Tuna and Los Lobos, also (not in Camden).

i always liked jane's addiction doing ripple...just because if memory serves correct, jane's was still a big freak out band from l.a. and here they were doing one of the dead's most beloved signature tunes... would have liked to have heard black flag do box of rain or something...

I was just looking for a copy of that at a shop yesterday--didn't find it.

Used to have it on tape--one of my favorite driving tapes when I was in college.

Been listening to this one quite a bit lately. Love L.L. doing Bertha. I also dig S. Vega's take on Cassidy. I can't get enough of Garcia lately. Has anyone ever heard Jerry and Grisman doing Maggie's Farm. I believe Grisman does vocals with Garcia on banjo. Love it!

Hey C-Neil...whazzup, brudda!

Doesnt Lyle Lovette do Friend of The Devil? I could be wrong.

Think I'll play a little Jerry and Grisman today ,justcause Lammy says so!
