I just heard on the new that he passed away today. He was 83. Apparently he slipped an fell at a Stones show in October. He lapsed into a coma and never recovered.

He's the real deal. Thanks to him. I can be entertained the rest of my life with Atlantic records catalog.

He also had a nice speech to give about Duane and the brothers at the hall of fame induction.

Wow, very sad. Ahmet was a great man.

Ray Charles, Ahmet, Tom Dowd, and so many others from Atlantic have all left us. But their hearts and souls will live on forever.

From Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin, to John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Ray Charles, the Drifters, Bobby Darin and Roberta Flack - today we lose another giant. One of his other gifts was to bring one Tom Dowd in as a producer, setting the stage for so many other artists to come. God bless Ahmet Ertegan.

Rest in Peace, man.

He certainly brought a lot, no a TON of great artists to the fold.

Men like him are really missed these days in cookie cutter crap that passes for music.

I can see it now ... Tommy Dowd sitting in that great control booth in the sky saying, "Hey man, what took you! Just waiting on Jerry Wexler and we'll have the team
back together! We got Duane on guitar, Coltrane on sax, Miles on Trumpet. The possibilities are endless, man."

Goody bye Ahmet. See you on the other side ...

I posted this earlier in another thread.

Very sad news to hear. Hate to think what American music would've have been like without people like Ahmet Ertegun and Atlantic Records. Thoughts and prayers certainly go out to him and his family and his many admirers.

RIP Ahmet, and thank you for all the music you sent our way.

Had to admit I was crying as I read the obit this morning.....one shudders to think that the present music world is so often tied to money instead of talent and feeling....

Anyone think Duane and Tom Dowd are sitting around with AE having a good laugh at what has passed

I always think of Ahmet when I think about the night my oldest daughter was born. I stayed up that night to watch the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary shindig which featured a reunion of Led Zepplin. (My wife went into labor an hour and a half later.) Ahmet was front and center the entire evening, enjoying the festivities and artists who were feature on his record label. It was a great show and Atlantic Records and Ahmet Ehrtegan rightly deserved celebration. R.I.P. Ahmet. Say hi to Skydog for us.

RIP Ahmet Ehrtegun. Along with his brother Nesuhi, they changed the face and sound of music with Atlantic Records- just think of all the great music you've heard from this man and his fellow music lovers.

Found this quote from Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates and I think it sums up exactly what Ahmet Ertegun was all about.

quote:
Friday, 15 December 2006
" Ahmet Ertegun was a giant in the record business. He cared first and foremost about the ARTIST and the MUSIC--much more than the business. He believed that if the Artist was true to him or herself, good business would follow. Sadly in today's atmosphere, this isn't the case. But, during Ahmet's days of influence it was! He was one of the first people to realize our potential and supported us during our beginning - the most important time. We couldn't have done what we did without Ahmet and Arif Mardin's support and encouragement. He changed music and created what I consider its golden age. He will be sorely missed.
--------- Daryl Hall
