Doesn't sound good.

the Allman Brothers Band 1st LP came out on Atco before Capricorn was fully up and running.

Atlantic Records founder seriously ill

•Record label one of most important in music history

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, the son of a Turkish diplomat who helped make Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin stars, is in a coma after injuring his brain in a fall, his doctor said Monday.

Dr. Howard Riina, his neurosurgeon, told Reuters in a telephone interview that the music industry legend "sustained a severe brain injury after a fall. He's in a deep coma and in critical condition. His chance of a meaningful recovery is small."

Riina said Ertegun, 83, was on life support in a neurological intensive care unit at Weill Cornell Medical Center. Asked when a decision might be made about continuing to provide life support to Ertegun, Riina said, "It's not clear at this point. He remains critically ill. He's still very sick."

Atlantic Records said Ertegun fell on October 29 while attending a Rolling Stones concert and was hospitalized with a head injury.

Ertegun, a jazz fanatic who came to the United States at age 11 when his father was named Turkish ambassador, founded Atlantic Records with Herb Abramson in 1947 and quickly turned it into one of the leading independent jazz and rhythm-and-blues labels.

Their early client list included legendary performers like Professor Longhair, Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, Erroll Garner and Dizzy Gillespie. (Gallery: Noted Atlantic artists)

Ertegun also helped Charles, Franklin, saxophonist John Coltrane and hard rock group Led Zeppelin became stars.

In 1955, his older brother, Nesuhi, joined Ertegun at Atlantic, where he developed an album department and built the label's jazz roster, producing Coltrane and Charles as well as Charles Mingus, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Herbie Mann.

Atlantic Records is owned by Warner Music Group Corp. Warner Music, once a part of Time Warner, was sold in 2003 to a consortium led by Edgar Bronfman Jr.

I rank him up there as a great "American" in my modern US lectures....sigh, the greats are leaving us so soon...

By the way, if you can get it, find a copy of AE's massive "autobiography" "What'd I Say" with literally thousands of photographs covering the history of Atlantic, AE, and the various acts. The RnRHoF has it for about 80 bucks, but I found mine on the internet for under 10 includng S & H

Cheers

Frank Zappa thought enough of him to name his son after him.

One of the true giants in the recording industry, open minded and fair, willing to take risks to expose the public to new music. Also instrumental in the rebirth of soccer in the USA, owning the NY Cosmos in the NASL. Prayers for Mr. Ertegun.

This is sad news and a blow to the music community he blessed during his life - I'm guessing many a musician owe whatever success they may have with the masses to this gentleman. Me, I'm happy he ended up in the business he did because he supported so many of the musicians I really love in their careers and allowed their music to be shared by the masses. Prayers to his family.

This is very sad news. He's an all-time great hero in the history of some of the greatest music we'll ever likely hear.

Take out certain parts of the puzzle that has evolved into the part of the American culture which we share, and it alters the form. Take out a few individuals, and it doesn't happen at all. Among these are Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Duane Allman, Phil Walden, and Bill Graham. The role of Ahmet Ertegun in our daily lives can't be overstated.
The health status of Bill Ector and Lefty Collins' Mom is of deep concern to so many of us now. If Ahmet Ertegun stays in Turkey, none of us would have ever heard of Bill Ector or Lefty Collins, or even know each other.

Very sad news to hear. Hate to think what American music would've have been like without people like Ahmet Ertegun and Atlantic Records. Thoughts and prayers certainly go out to him and his family and his many admirers.
