The idea for this thread came from the hijacking of the BIRD72 thread. How it could go from Tony to bagels is beyond me, but that's not the point.

I love southern cooking, BBQ and lots of other real good food that just is not as good up north. What is passed off for BBQ in New Jersey should be a crime. Grits is unknown, fried chicken comes frozen from Swanson and greens are what you get from a florist.

But while every good southerner has a grandma who made the best biscuits, that's not the case with bagels. This is a specialty item. It does not come frozen or wrapped in plastic. It's crunchy on the inside and chewy on the inside. A true bagel is not flavored with blueberry or made with whole wheat flour, oat bran or flax seeds. It may be plain or covered with salt, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic or all of the above. If it's really good, it will be hand-rolled and baked on the day you eat it.

A true bagel is to be smeared with cream cheese or toasted and buttered. If it doesn't make crumbs when you eat it, it's not a bagel.

After my wisdom teeth were removed, despite warnings from my dentist, I continued my daily bagel ritual. When the pain became unbearable, and I rinsed out the holes, and out came a variety of poppy and sesame seeds.

Does anyone else appreciate a REAL bagel?

Oh yeah. Good NY bagels are the best. A true delicacy. I go to Esa Bagels on 3rd and 50th every once in a while. Just superb.

I tinkered with baking my own bagels for a little bit, but sort of forgot about it. They came out OK, but still needed work. It's an art.

If I ate bagels as much as I really wanted to, I'd be enormous.

Good topic. You may have seen my comment in the hijacked Bird72 thread. I soon realized that those fellas were not kidding, and were apparently being deprived of quality bagels.

Would some good capitalist please open an Einstein Bros. in Georgia?! Or at least a good kosher deli.

Weekly ritual is a trip to the Bagelry on Lexington Ave and 88th St for weekly load up of Bagels, schmear, Novy and whitefish. There is no finer thing than the NYC bagel. I have tried many things that have tried to pass themselves off as bagels across this fair land of ours, but absolutely nuttin' in the world compares. The rest is just bread with a hole in it. Anyway heading to the Beacon in '07..make sure to try our local "delicacy".

Einstein bagels are better than Thomas' but more like seeing the Osmonds instead of the Allmans. A trip to the Beacon this March would kill two birds with one stone.

My sister lives in Atlanta, and has the same problem with deli- there was a Carnegie (run by the New York Carnegie), but it apparently did not last too long.

Bagels are one of my favorite foods. That's one thing I miss when I travel, a decent fresh bagel. Our official New Years Day breakfast is a bagel mit a schmear (cream cheese) and lox, coffee and mimosas.

If I had to choose one food item that I could live off of for the rest of my life, bagels would probably be it. Being in NC, though, about the best bagel I can come across regularly comes from Bruegger's - not bad, but not that great either. Panera's are good, too.

At my peak, I was eating probably 10 or so bagels a week (and I still would if I kept them in constant supply).

Last March, when me and my roommate were in NYC for the Beacon shows, we stayed at a hotel close to 72nd and Broadway, and on Saturday morning we decided to go out and eat at the first bagel place we came to. Yup, it was H&H, and I had one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. You got me wanting a bagel right now!

I always make sure that I go to Yonah Schimmel in the Lower East Side to get bagels when in NYC for the annual Beacon run. It is known for its knishes, but there are some great bagels in there and they are huge too!!!!

H&H yes.
East Coast thing. They can't get it right in San Francisco - which will throw some delish bread at you. Couple of good delis in Santa Monica get it right.

Nothing really close here in Colorado.

Salt, Rye and Poppy Seed.

Prefer 'em warm, uncut as a on the go snack anytime.
