If you consider the artists that have the greatest influence in music on other artists the Top 4 would be.

1. The Beatles
2. The Byrds
3. Bob Dylan
4. Jimi Hendrix

Just about every artists from the 60s till today has borrowed "something" from at least one, if not more of these artists. Other artist who were equally influential would be.

5. The Rolling Stones
6. Sly and the Family Stone
7. James Brown
8. Ray Charles
9. The Three Kings (B.B., Albert and Freddie)
10. Muddy Waters
11. and let's not forget the soul and the RnB that came from Motown, Stax/Volt, and Atlantic/Atco labels.

John Coltrane
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Duane Allman (even just his '60s stuff [that is, his session work starting in late 1968 and on through the ABB debut album], though he kept getting better in 1970 and '71 )

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that musically things are MIGHTY WHITE around here. Except for a token Jimi Hendrix (and one John Coltrane mention) you would think that African Americans made very little contibutions to the music of the '60s. Fact is, without the SIZABLE contibutions of African American musicians in the 50s and the 60s, the music of bands and artists like the Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton (Cream) and many of the others WHITE artists who are mentioned in this post would have never existed.

Oh,excuse me...i thought the topic was name your 4 favorites....thanks to my Brother, the 1st music I ever listened to was Otis Redding,James Brown,Wilson Pickett,Jackie Wilson etc. & later ,I spent 12 years touring w/a half white half black funk band ( the last 2 yr's,I was the only white member). Although i still love RnB & funk,it's not my favorite. I could care less if someone is black, white, green, purple, gay, straight,or whatever....if the music's good,I dig it. Music has no color,IMO.

Jeez....as Hugh said its YOUR favorite artists from the 60's. Cut the PC crap. Sure we all got our musical learning from Motown, R&B and the like. And no one denies the roots of all this music.
So for the PC sensitive crowd here ya go:

The Temptations
The 4 Tops
Otis Redding
James and Bobby Purify
