Published reports say Mark Loretta, the Sox second baseman last season, is talking to the Yankees about playing first base.

For what team?

haha..... honestly i'm not too sad to see him go..... he was barely an above average player IMO. First base for the Yanks seems like an odd option, although he is steady on defense his range is a tad limited so he would probably fit on 1st. In terms of fitting into the lineup, i can't see him doing anything but #8 or #9 for the yanks.

Otie, Beltran was a Boras guy and he clearly instructed Boras to take LESS money from the Yankees...

Of course, luckily for all that is good in the world, that didn't work out.

Let's face it, quality pitching is hard to find. That's why the BoSox are willing to spend over $100 mill for an unproven commodity in D-Mas.

Hey Otie,

I definitely don't think Zito is worth what he'll get -- I would peg him as a 3 in an ideal universe, and pay him accordingly. But look at the market for pitching, and look at the scarcity of pitchers good enough to post an ERA even below 4.50!

If Zito comes to Shea, his ERA likely will go down (NL batters, players who haven't seen him a lot, no DH, and a pitcher's park). He won't have to be "The Man," because the Mets have a deep staff full of decent old guys and promising young ones. He'll be an overpaid starter who will do just fine. He can either be our decent overpaid starter, or someone else's.

I'll take him ina heartbeat, but with no illusions.

Agreed, Pete, except that he is coming from another pitchers park, so that is a wash. According to Bill James park indices, which rates how a park affects hitting, both Shea and McAfee rated about the same overall.

The Mets met with Jeff Suppan and his agent today. It's a sign of the time that an average pitcher lie Suppan will see big money. To me, he isn't much different than Trachsel, except that his games take less time which would impact beer sales.

Suppan's stuff didn't look average to Mets bats this October.

But overall, I agree with you on him. He'd be a lousy fit in NYC, apparently very earnest about his Evangelical values. I'm afraid we Shea faithful might turn his ears beet red in a Noo Yawk minute!

That's why I think the Phils getting Freddy Garcia was huge.
I don't think anybody saw that coming.

This good be a great pickup for the Phillies. I think this guy may have a Cy Young award somewhere down the road. It looks like he will have a good lineup backing him up. He has great control. the only negative I can see is that he gave up 58 home runs over the last two seasons. That may be a problem in that small Phillie ballpark, but there have been pitchers who gave up a lot of home runs and were still great pitchers.

He had a good quote in the paper saying that he's matured a lot
and doesn't let the homers bug him as much as earlier in his career.
He's become more of a pitcher than a thrower.
He's supposed to be a beast competition wise and he's playoff tested
and that's huge for their clubhouse.
They still need bullpen help and it's only a matter of time
before Gillick pulls the trigger on something.

Croky, do you think they will dump Burrell? They sure talk about it a lot.

At this point, no. If they would've landed Soriano definitely.
I'm actually glad Gillick didn't sign any of those big bats.
They all got way too much loot and I'm glad he showed restraint.
I haven't given up on Burrell, just yet. Supposedly, he's working
his ass off this winter and I'm hoping he'll get rid of all his nagging
injuries. He's gotta stop partying too.

just read the article...... that would be ridiculous if the DBacks traded for him and then gave him an extension.... i think it's pretty clear Johnson is in the twilight of his career.

This makes no sense at all. The Yankees don't want to pay any of the Unit's salary, which is a common practice when you are trying to dump a guy. The D-Backs then want to sign him to an extension. If I was a D-Back fan, I might be a bit annoyed at this. If I was a Yankee fan I would think Santa had been good to my team.

HO! HO! HO!

I know it doesnt make any sense to us.

But he helped give the team some credibility and helped them win a World Series. He will put people in seats there because of that. Johnson and Schilling are like Ruth and Gehrig, Dimaggio and Mantle are to the Yankees

Reason for extension maybe to make sure he gets #300 in a Arizona uniform. Also to defer some of his money til after he retires?

So the Yankees are talking seriously about trading Randy Johnson, after only 2 years?

He has a no-trade clause, so he would have to approve the move.

Hey, the Jays are looking for pitchers...but you can't have Vernon Wells, sorry Chuck & Rob

Alright I hope this doesnt mean the Yankees go after Zito! I really think he is overrated. Maybe if he gets back with Peterson (Mets) he might return to the old Zito. He hasnt been the same since Peterson left.

Now that said. I hope this opens the door to work out a trade for Dontrelle Willis. One can wish

if the D'Backs even just send the Yanks a bag of balls for Johnson then that is way too good of a deal for the Yanks. His ERA would go down in Arizona but his wins would decline as well. They have to get this deal done now if the Yanks intend on acquiring anyone else though. The only thing the $16 million would do for them in late Jan. would be saving them some luxury tax which i'm guessing would only be a small dent in it.

It's still kind of a strange deal. I would think the D'Back could go after another pitcher if they seriously have the prospects and cash to offer up.

That being said i think it's just purely a move for the D'Backs to put some more butts in the seats. They could care less what the ERA says as long as R. Johnson is on the scoreboard every 5 games.

Well at least the D-Backs are willing to spend some money unlike Time Warner with the Braves.
Somebody please buy the Braves.
