Wow, they are already calling Matsuzaka a "National Treasure" and he dropped the puck at the Bruins game last night

I think the Red Sox have a lot riding on this guy, if he turns out to be a bust, teams may rethink breaking the bank for future Japanese pitchers.

But then again, he could be great.

The money and the hype leave him no room for failure. He'd better be great from day one or he will hear it big time from the fans and the press. If that happens, he will find life in America not so enjoyable. Boston can be as tough a place to play in as anywhere.

I dunno, there been a lot written in the Boston media about the tough transition he faces. Not only in terms of baseball (most Japanese teams have maybe 3 major-league quality hitters in their lineup and there rest are closer to AAA, pitching every 5 days instead of 6, etc.) but also in terms of adjusting to life in America and an intense baseball city like Boston. I think most people hope he won't need it, but are prepared to give him some leeway to get adjusted.

BTW, when Theo referred to him as a national treasure, he was referring to how he is view in Japan not the US.

Jays signed Vernon Wells for 7 yr at $126 millioin.....

I think it's a great deal considering what Soriano got.

Wells has flown a bit under the radar as compared to Soriano. I think the casual fan may be unaware of how good he really is. Toronto got a great deal. It seems that all of the big money is going to pitchers this year.

Great move by Toronto. Give the Blue Jays credit they seem to spend their money wisely. The Burnett deal was questionable last year but when he is healthy he has nasty stuff!

Say it aint so Not Melky!

From ESPN.

A three-team trade reportedly is in the works that would send outfielder Melky Cabrera from the New York Yankees to the Atlanta Braves.

The deal, an unnamed baseball official told the New York Times, also would send reliever Mike Gonzalez from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Yankees, and first baseman Adam LaRoche from the Braves to the Pirates.

Rob I agree, Toronto sports teams sometimes do questionable deals, but Wells is a first class player you know is going to perform every year, good move on managements part

Now we just need one more pitcher...

Maybe Clemens will come back to Toronto.

Now wouldn't that be something!

I know the Sox were interested in Gonzalez......... this might be a move to block the Sox from getting a new closer.

I really don't think it is a move to block Sox. They want to solidify the pen and probably make him the heir to Mariano. He caught the Yankees attention last year.

Here's a funny snippet from the Sportsguy's mailbag column:

quote:
Q: The Sox should just tell Manny he got traded to Boston. He won't know the difference.
--Mike H, Noxen, N.H.

SG: I love this idea. They could go all out with this: Call him up, tell him he's been traded to Boston, have him pack up all of his stuff, fly him in circles in the team jet for five hours, then drop him off in Cambridge and tell him he's on the West Coast. He might fall for it. By the time the season starts, it will be too late for him to complain. I really think this could work.

he's got a point

I was thinking abuot the lineup for a minute and i'm diggin it

SP
1. Schilling
2. Beckett
3. Papelbon
4. Matsuzaka
5. Wakefield / Lester

1. Youk / Crisp?
2. Lugo
3. Ortiz
4. Manny
5. Drew / Pena
6. Lowell
7. Varitek
8. Crisp / Youk?
9. Pedroia

looks good but there's still one gaping hole....... CLOSER

Whenever I hear of the Yankees making a big trade, I remember the Seinfeld episode where George Steinbrenner comes to the Costanza household to inform George's parents that they think George is dead.

All Frank Costanza can say to George is "How could you trade Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps!"

Very cool recap from behind the scenes of the Dice-K negotiations (including why the bid was $51,111,111.11, with all the 1's):

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/12/17/wooing_of_ pitcher_was_wowing/

My fave part of the story:
There is also a spy-novel quality to the extraordinary lengths to which the Sox went to keep their quest secret. When Henry decided to send his plane to southern California last Monday, the Red Sox logo on the plane's tail was covered. Shipley, who lives in Florida and got on the plane in Boca Raton, picked up Lucchino and Epstein at Hanscom Field in Bedford. The flight plan showed the plane was going not to California but to Houston -- all the better to make snooping eyes believe they were headed for a meeting with the agents for Roger Clemens. And when they arrived at the Marriott Suites in Costa Mesa, they all checked in under assumed names -- the names of Shipley's high school mates back in Australia.

GM Omar Minaya, Tony Bernazard, and John Ricco of the Mets are getting on the old Wilpon Express jet tomorrow AM to fly out to sunny LA and try to play a little hardball with Scott Boras and Barry Zito.

There are so many good reasons for Zito to sign with the Mets over the Rangers -- his old pitching coach is here, he'll be a media star with lots of big endorsements in NYC, he's a guitar-wielding, photograph-taking free spirit who would probably be more at home here than in Arlington, and most importantly, he'd be in a pitcher's park in the league with no DH and filled with batters who don't know him yet.... Good chance he lowers his ERA, ups his wins, and sees a fair amount of playoff action here, all of which puts him in better position for his final payday 6 years from now when he's only 34.

BUT The Giants want him too. And as much as getting out of the AL and not pitching in a hitter's park/convection oven like Arlington will help his career, Boras's clients usually follow the big bux. So we shall see.

Look for the Mets to either match Texas on the years but offer less money, or outbid Texas on the annual value but go 1 to 2 years less. GO GET 'EM OMAR!!!

20 million for 5 years.

yup..... he probably already took a huge cut on the Matsuzaka deal

unfortunately that deal forced him to keep his Gulfstream 400 and not upgrade to a Gulfstreram 800, so I'm sure he's looking for Zito to repay all that back. Also, his wife sure has been giving him hell about not getting a new Benz SLK in a while

Quiet on the baseball front. It looks like the threeway deal with Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Yankees has quieted down. That makes me happy.

Published reports say Mark Loretta, the Sox second baseman last season, is talking to the Yankees about playing first base.
