So I'll guess i'll start the new thread for us baseball heads....... got to keep this running

quote:
Does this mean Manny is on his way out? Lugo is agreat pick up. Drew if he stays healthy will be ok too.

According to reports, it is looking less and less likely that Manny will be traded. Francona has been quoted as saying that he thinks Manny will be back, and other GMs have said that Boston is asking too much and suggested that perhaps they are asking too much on purpose because they really don't want to trade him. It is more likely that Wily Mo Pena is the odd man out, which I really don't get why they would give up on him so soon. All that said, anything can happen so I wouldn't be shocked if Manny does get moved.

[Edited on 12/6/2006 by gondicar]

I think really the best option for the sox is to keep Manny....... they probably would never get in return what he puts up ON THE FIELD..... i'll admit he's a complete pain off the field but it's almost a sure bet we know what he's going to do next season and the season afterwards.

As far as Wily Mo........ that whole thing confuses the crap out of me..... i wish Theo would make up his mind about the organization's direction.

Guess again.

The Yankees last gasp was this year when they lost to Detroit.

Next year they'll be lucky to make the playoffs.

You heard it here first.

You can thank me next year.

Julio Lugo has agreed to terms on a contract with the Red Sox that will pay him $36 million over four years, the Red Sox' official site reports.

Drew for $70 mill, $51 mill just to talk to Matsuzaka? That's $157 million for two journeymen & a prospect. And they haven't even signed a contract with the prospect!

What are the BoSox thinking? That they can outspend the Yankees?

Wharfy, how do you feel about that?

I know I was pissed when he left, but I will ESTATIC if Andy comes back.
I just hope he is healthy.

With the exception of Wang, there is noone I trust in at big spot on the rotation right now.

yeah i'm from NC.... i went to college in Boston..... my school had no college sports, i could see the lights of fenway from my apartment and all my buds were sox fans so it seemed logical to start following the sox. Fell in love with Fenway and the team..... Had a lot of good times at Fenway with my friends, unfortunately it's just too expensive now. I'm out in LA now for my career. Luckily Chanez Ravine is a good surrogate for fenway

Ted Lilly 40 million for 4 years from the Cubs! This just pushes Zito value up and up.

ESPN qoute:
[qoute]
But the Yankees informed the 30-year-old Lilly on Wednesday night they would not bid for him, choosing to concentrate their efforts on Andy Pettitte, who said earlier in the day that he plans to pitch next season.[/qoute]

How about Piazza getting 8.5 million from the As

Why are they all spending stupid! I am glad the Yankees are not doing this. I hope they learned from the past. We still have a couple of those on hand right now.

Overspending is kind of the theme this offseason............ I'm curious to see what a team will give Gil Meche.

Where else would he sign but with the ROYALS. After all he was a king.

That's a lot of money for a guy who in 6 seasons has only started more than thirty games twice. His w-l record isn't bad, 55-44, but his lifetime ERA is 4.65. Keep in mind that he pitched in a pitchers park the last few years.

The bigger question is..

Why would ANYONE want to pitch in KC

Looks like the players are going for the money. Whomever gives them the best contract, that's where they'll go. Seems like playing for a contender doesn't matter as much as the bucks.

To us average fans, we would jump at the chance to play on a team that had the potential to win the World Series. We would gladly be the 25th player, just to be on that team that won it all. Evidentially today's players look at things a bit differently. I can't say I blame 'em. Would you trade a temporary feeling of being a World Champ for absolute financial stability for your family? Given the choice I'm not sure which way I would go.

It looks like the sox may be trying to squeeze Boras a little bit:

From Rotoworld.com:

DAISUKE MATSUZAKA
While Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to travel to the U.S. on Saturday, he may just be going to Los Angeles to shoot a Nike commercial and pay a visit to a training facility.
There apparently won't be any face-to-face negotiations, though he could go to Boston for a physical if enough progress is made in talks. The Boston Globe reported Thursday that the Red Sox were less optimistic that a deal would be struck. However, that's probably a negotiating ploy to let Scott Boras know they are willing to walk away. Serious talks probably haven't even started yet.

also the sox seem interested in Gagne

ERIC GAGNE
A source told the Boston Globe's Gordon Edes that talks are heating up between the Red Sox and free agent Eric Gagne.
Gagne may want more guaranteed money than the Red Sox are interested in offering, but Boston has already done two deals with Scott Boras this winter (J.D. Drew and Alex Cora) and still has one more coming up with Daisuke Matsuzaka. It might pay off to give Gagne an extra million dollars or two.
