It was in Iowa City, I guess at Iowa University. The students unofficially renamed the place for Duane. According to other posters, it's not there anymore.

Even though I misspent my teen years mostly in Moline, IL, on the Mississippi about an hour east of Iowa City, IA, I'd never heard of the Duane Allman Fieldhouse until a few minutes ago.

The University of Iowa's field house has no other name officially attached to it--it's just the Field House. It was built in 1927 (1925 also seen on the net). "Largest indoor field house in the world and largest indoor swimming pool in the world when constructed."
http://www.uihealthcare.com/depts/medmuseum/wallexhibits/wishyou/postbuildi ngs.html

http://www.uiowa.edu/~maps/f/fh1.htm

The Iowa Hawkeyes currently play ball in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which didn't open until January 1983, over 11 years after Duane's passing. We can assume that the unofficial naming of Duane Allman Field House occurred in the '70s, while the Field House was still the Home of the Hawkeyes and therefore more important than it is now. Carver-Hawkeye Arena was named for one Roy Carver, a great benefactor of the university whose name is all over campus:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=University+of+Iowa+Roy+Ca rver&btnG=Search

So, ozersmoke and Marley, the Field House does still exist, and it still could use the personal touch of having Duane's name attached to it--not that Duane was a Hawkeye fan or anything.

But look there just south of Carver-Hawkeye Arena: it's the Duane Banks Baseball Stadium. That must count for something! Think "Duane Allman + Ernie Banks."

"Let's play two!"
"Play all night!"

January 7th 1971 the Allman Brothers played the Hanner Field House at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro GA...........

This was perhaps the longest "Statesboro Blues" ever played clocking in at over 40 minutes. Some students then refered the place as Duane's house.

This is one of the shows that unfortunately was not captured on tape............

Were you there, Matt? This reminds me of a show I've been searching for for years, the Brewer Field House 2/28/71 show. University of Missouri... I'm told that show contains the absolute BEST Duane Dreams ever played.

Sandman said isn't no longer there in another thread about this. He said it was in Iowa City, but maybe I'm wrong that it's at IU.

From the database, 2/19/72 Iowa City, students unofficially named the fieldhouse.

The show Origapch referenced was from Jan '71 and it was Whipping Post that was 40 minutes long, according to a fan's recollection.

Concert shirt I bought in December '80 (and still have) had the ABB logo (like the Enlightened Rogues album cover) on the front and Duane Allman Memorial Auditorium on the back.

Marley, I doubt that he said that, because up around the Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids, few people use double negatives. That does sound like central Illinois. This must be the old thread (2003) you're talking about--good memory!

which place in the midwest was it the students renamed the Duane Allman Fieldhouse? That should get them at least honorable mention.
That was Iowa City...

Unfortunately, it's no longer there....
The venue in Iowa City is no longer there....Iowa City is, in fact, still there....

From what I saw last night, the Field House is indeed still standing at the University of Iowa campus. I got the impression that it's still a hotspot for "minor" intercollegiate and intramural sports--just that the basketball team moved to the new arena. Let's see . . . Here are a couple finds:
"Recreational facilities in the Field House and Recreation Building include a swimming pool, running tracks, weight machines, tennis and racquetball courts"

"UI Field House North Gym

"Homes for the University of Iowa mens' {men's!} and women's gymnastics teams are the Field House and Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Field House, which contains the Hawkeyes' practice area, is also the site for most competitions.

"The Field House is at the southern end of Iowa's physical plant. It is equipped with unique resi and foam pits, and portable bleachers for meets and clinics. The facility has a capacity of 1,500 for competitions. The coaches' offices are also located in the Field House."
http://hawkeyesports.cstv.com/facilities/iowa-field-house-north-gym.html

Maybe Sandman was confusing the move of most of the sports (men's and women's basketball, volleyball, wrestling) to Carver-Hawkeye Arena with the demise of the old Field House. But you know, Sandman is an Iowa State alum, I believe, and his sense of cross-state rivalry may have been causing him to say whatever he could to prevent any honor from going to the hated Hawkeyes.

No, your assumption about the University of Iowa would be good, Marley, because there's nothing else in Iowa City that would have anything called the Field House, except for high schools. Well, there is this one other college in town:
http://iowacity.areaconnect.com/city-colleges.htm

Duane Banks

P.s. about Duane Banks Field: "In the fall of 2001, the Iowa baseball field was re-named The Duane Banks Baseball Field in honor of the Hawkeyes' former head coach. Banks, the winningest coach in Iowa history, served as Iowa's head baseball coach from 1970-1997.

"Banks Field was originally built in 1974. The 3,000-seat stadium has dimensions of 330 feet down the lines, 375 in the power alleys and 400 to centerfield."
http://hawkeyesports.cstv.com/facilities/iowa-banks-field.html

"After 28 years as Iowa State’s head baseball coach {no, it was as Iowa's coach! }, Duane Banks retired from coaching in 1997. His record at Iowa was 810-575-4, where he won more games than any other Hawkeye coach {there we go }, coaching Iowa to 21 consecutive winning seasons."

Shortly after Duane's death the remaining brothers played a gig in Iowa City at what was formerly the Field House (basketball). At the time, there was a petition going around calling for the building to be renamed Duane Allman Fieldhouse in brother Duane's honor. Did not pan out and the Field House has been replaced by Carver Hawkeye Arena.
