That was entertaining, but I'm pretty sure it's CGI, and not an actual mechanical device.

I have seen some pretty sophisticated robotic music machines, though.

A place I visited last year, The House on the Rock (and more importantly, the attached museum complex), boasts the largest collection in the world of such machines.

The top picture is of the Mikado, as mentioned in the caption. The bottom pic is of the "Blue Room."

The youtube link was to an animation developed for part of the Animusic series. This is a truely unique approach to animation. Unlike most things in the past where a piece of music would be decided upon, and then animation created to suit it, these guys took a different approach. They created animated instruments they thought would serve a certain piece of music, then they gave each instrument properties of movement and musical response that each would respond to when fed the actual score (not sure if it's reading the actual score, using midi, or some combination of both). Anyway, the instruments respond and "play" the music as it's being fed to them through the computer, and the resulting animation is created. So in theory, once built, you could feed different music and the instruments would respond accordingly, playing the new tune and creating a new animation in the process.

When you watch the DVD's, the precision becomes evident and clearly signals this is not ordinary animation. In these cases, the animation is created from the actual music, not the other way around.

Consider the programing of this for a minute. To precisely pluck a string or hit a drum in EXACT accordance with the music, the animation engine that drives the movements of the instruments has to know in advance what notes are coming, how long it will take to move from one note to the other, and so forth. The technology behind this is pretty impressive.

Anyway, you can order the DVD's and find out more from their website: http://www.animusic.com/

Here is the email I had attached to the vid when I got it. Looked like animation to me also. Very impressive also btw.

This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between
the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of
Engineering at the University of Iowa. Amazingly, 97% of the machines
components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of
Bancroft Iowa, yes farm equipment!

It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment,
calibration, and tuning before filming this video but as you can see it
was WELL worth the effort.

It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University
and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.

I noticed the snopes page refered back to what I mentioned as the developers of this: Animusic. The two DVD's they have released are very entertaining. You have to give these guys huge credit for imagination once you see the span of their work. My favorite is from the second DVD, the song being "Pictures at an Exhibition". They took some of the old ELP cues, some of their own ideas, and mixed it with the classical piece to create something great to watch and listen to. With the home theater cranked, the 5.1 sound, and great visuals, this is a surprisingly moving and powerful piece.

Here's a clip - http://64.68.151.146/video/CathedralPictures.wmv

Don't think so Haisija. I believe that one is credited to one of their fans. Cool and well done as that is, the Animusic stuff is generally even better.
