This saddens me a great deal. The Beacon is a very special theater, about to be ruined by corporate greed, James Dolan & the not-so-fine folks at Cablevision.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117953993.html?categoryid=16&cs=1

The most relevant part of this planned renovation is this:

"One source said renovations will include tearing out the seats on the orchestra level, making the venue general admission and adding concessions."

Turning this beautiful classic into a fight for your floor space general admission theater is as good as destroying it. Damn shame I say, damn shame

I don't want to think how this will affect the March runs and the NYE Mule mini-runs.

Guess they'll just have to move it to the Chicago Theater....or the Fox in Atlanta.

New seats would be fine... but ripping the seats out of the orchestra really upsets me. It's just stupid. It could use a dusting, and maybe be re painted, new carpet, everything else is fine. They're going to ruin that place.

I would travel to either venue to be a part of whatever run they put together.

The Beacon Run will be the exact same in 2007 as in other years (at least Theatre wise, maybe not band / time)

The construction will start early in 2008 and the goal is to have the place hold roughly 5,000.

The reason for this is not only for more money from ticket sales, but MSG thinks that it will "increase merchandising and vending" because people will be on a level surface with this stuff and won't have to leave the room to go get it. That is the goal of this new floor.

There will still be a balcony, although it may not be teh same as what it is now.

Well, since the renovations don't affect the 2007 run, I'm not gonna worry about it

Whatever the situation with Mr. Trucks, hope it all gets patched up by the time the Beacon run comes around in less than 4 months.

There's nothing to worry about. Derek has already said several times he will be at the Beacon.

Hammerstein Ballroom would be the place. It is general admission on the floor, but at least it has a cool vibe to the place. I saw the Brothers at Radio City one year and I thought that place was lame for a ABB show. I don't like the Theatre at MSG either, but I would take that over Radio City Music Hall.

I realize they can do what they want now that they have made the move to buy the theater, but how many like me have a hard time wanting to go to shows with no seating close to the stage and standing-room, GA-only conditions. I know that logic rarely comes into play on these issues, but let's look at the current top concert acts. My bet is that the stats are dominated by bands that have been around for, well, decades. Meaning that they have fans who have also been around for decades, and may not want to stand for 3-4 hours just to get a decent view of the stage. Never mind the thought of twice the number of bodies squeezed into the hall.

Am I alone in thinking this is a great way to alienate the older fans?

You are not alone.

This sucks, no matter how you look at it.

Damn shame this "historic landmark" can't be protected from the corporate rape that MSG is planning.

GA in the orchestra, so the tshirt guys have a better visibility.

Nice.

Seems to me everyone is forgetting that the entire main floor ALWAYS stands during every ABB show at the Beacon anyway. That's one of the things that makes shows there unique.

I think the difference is that you have the option of sitting as opposed to standing. Also, if you go to the bathroom, you don't have to worry about losing your seat - you know that it is guaranteed. And with General Admission, people will be standing on line for hours to get a good spot.

I think that it is a strong possibility that they will have the option of folding chairs (similar to Nokia) and will use this option for older acts such as the Allman Brothers or Hot Tuna (two bands which play the Beacon every year). I'm not sure what they will do for Mule, but this is just purely speculation on my part.
