Van Halen's New Bassist? Eddie's Boy Wonder!

Posted Nov 2nd 2006 6:05PM by TMZ Staff

Van Halen has finally found its new bassist -- and it looks like the rock gods are keeping the band a family affair.

TMZ is first to confirm that Van Halen has hired 15-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen -- the son of guitarist Eddie Van Halen and estranged wife Valerie Bertinelli, and nephew of drummer Alex Van Halen -- as the new bassist for the band.

Wolfgang replaces longtime bassist Michael Anthony, who left the band earlier this year. Van Halen spokesperson Janie Liszewski tells TMZ that Wolfgang, known as "Wolfie," has already joined his dad and uncle for rehearsals in the studio. Wolfie played dates with his father during the band's 2004 tour, and the song "316" on 1991's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge," was named for Wolfie's birth date that same year.

The band is still without a lead singer, despite rumors that David Lee Roth might rejoin.

Watch for Van Halen on Tour at your local Rib Fest with REO, Nugent, and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Me too. I still like the old DLR stuff for pure rock and roll power, but Sammy's vocals are MUCH more listenable, and I thought the songwriting was better during the SH era. Anyone else like the heck out of BALANCE?

I thought the last two VH albums were terrible. Balance was very wimpy and watered down and the record with Gary Charone had only one decent song (Without You). Every single record with Roth are gems. Pure hard rock with major attitude. If they had done a reunion about 5 or 6 years ago with all four original members I think it could have been great. With the passage of time plus the disclusion of Michael Anthony I think they will probably not be so good. A big part of the live classic VH experience is their high octane stage show. I can't see Dave or Ed being able to match the kind of stage presence that the fans are gonna expect. What I'm trying to say is that it is too late. They should have done this a long time ago when it still could have been great.

Although I am a big Sammy fan, I never much liked his work with VH. I think his solo work and the two Montrose albums are great though. Once Sammy joined, it was like Eddie forgot how to play guitar. In fact, I really only loved the first 4 VH records. I was really excited to see the DLR era reunion (even though it has train wreck written all over it), but Michael's background vocals were very prominent in the sound, and it will be difficult to get the classic sound without him. I kind of worder if this is going to be like what Black Sabath did when they first got back together with Ozzy. They did a tour without Bill Ward (saying Bill didn't have it anymore), milked it for what it was worth, then invited Bill Ward back for a real reunion. I don't know if the VH "reunion" will last that long though.

Agreed,BigDave....& I also dig Balance. I saw them twice w/Dave,& twice w/Sammy.The shows w/Sammy were far better,IMO.Sammy's vocals were better,IMO,& I was blown away when he picked up his guitar...& held his own w/Eddie.At least,I think he did.

Comin' from someone who was/is a huge VH fan - what a god-damn sad way to go out for one of America's greatest "rock" bands.

How pathetic to fire the bassist or make it so uncomfortable that he finally leaves after numerous humiliations.

VH could have went out with a huge bang & dignity if when they did the reunion tour with Sammy about 2 years ago - they actually sat down for more than 5 minutes and planned out a farewell set.....

Let's see for example:
ON FIRE (set opener)
JAMIE'S CRYING
TAKE YOUR WHISKEY HOME
ATOMIC PUNK
MINE ALL MINE
ONLY ONE WAY TO ROCK > ROCK & ROLL
FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED
PLEASUREDOME
BOTTOM'S UP

Instead we got the crap what do we all know how to play right now

SAD SAD SAD

As much as I would like to believe that if they got DAVE back it would be fun, exciting, chock-full O'energy - it wiould likely be just one thing; SAD

Dave could never sing when he was great (he chanted/pranced around and entertained THE CROWDS).

Now - not a chance

That sums it up pretty well. Hell DLR sang out of tune on the albums. Never mind live. But that is what made him Dave.

Eddie should just sing. He can't get along with anyone anyway. Better yet just do an instrumental album and play some damn guitar for a change. Van Halen has become like Boston. The band reappears every 7-8 years.

I could care less who sings. It is funny that people put down the album with Gary. There were no singles on that one. Long tunes. But most important, Eddie is great on that album. Great guitar sound and playing some different styles for a change. he had started to play the same solo over and over in his sleep. that album steers away from tapping and has some stellar straight playing.

Next season : Rock Star -Van Halen

Where can I audition?

The addition of Eddie's kid is a total slap in the face to Michael Anthony. I don't think the reunion with DLR is going to happen. Eddie is too much of a douche to share the spotlight. And without Anthony, there are no harmony vocals in the lineup. RIP VH.
