I think John's stuff is the best of the ex-Beatles.

I would say that John Lennon Plastic Ono Band is his best with Imagine running a close second. However, I have not listened to the former in years as I simply find it too sad. In any case, both are masterpieces and are comparable to his Beatles stuff.

Best song? Too tough. Imagine and Instant Karma are obvious choices. I really like Jealous Guy as well as No 9 Dream. Gimme Some Truth is beloved by every angry young man.

Imagine is my favorite song ever, but the Plastic Ono Band disc is better then the Imagine disc, IMHO..

And Double Fantasy is damn good too

John had some good solo stuff but the best of it pales next to his work with McCartney with the Beatles. Too much talk on Lennon focuses on his post-Beatle stuff and not enough on the true genius that was the Beatles. My all-time favorite Lennon composition? I Am The Walrus.

One of my favorite moments in the recorded history of the Beatles is in "Getting Better," where Paul is being all up and optimistic with that great sunny chorus "I got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time..." And then in chimes John in the background with his dark side and his wry humor "It can't get no worse..."

To be honest, the older I get the more I appreciate Paul for his typically British, stiff-upper-lip attitude. I find it charming where it used to just annoy me...

But of course John is the best. My fave John solo songs?

Imagine
Jealous Guy
Watching the Wheels
Mother
God
Instant Karma

Fave John Beatles songs?
I Am The Walrus
Because
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
She Said She Said
I'm Only Sleeping
And Your Bird Can Sing

My favorite song John ever recorded, was not written by him...John's version of "Stand By Me" gives me chills every time I hear it.

Thanks Wharfy. It's neat to peek in on the workings of these 5 genius'.

Most of my favorite Lennons were during his Beatle phase

Across The Universe
Glass Onion
Please, Please Me
Ticket To Ride
Nowhere Man
Come Together (apologies to Chuck Berry)....etc, etc

...one of my favorites is 'Because' on the 'Abbey Road' album. The harmony between John & George is mindblowing!

Also got a great bootleg cd by Yellow Dog called 'It' Not Too Bad'. It's nothing more than the evolution of 'Strawberry Fields' from John's original recordings of him singing the beginning of the song in his bathroom, to the studio tapings. Just a marvelous recording of a progression of creating a masterpiece.

Mind Games
Imagine
Mother
#9 Dream
Instant Karma
Cold Turkey
Stand By Me
Watching the Wheels
Beatiful Boy

Beatle John

Please Please Me
Twist and Shout
I Should Have Known Better
I Feel Fine
No Reply

I'm A Loser
Help
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
It's Only Love
Norwegian Wood
Nowhere Man
In My Life
Rain
I'm Only Sleeping
She Said, She Said
All You Need Is Love
I am the Walrus
Dear Prudence
I'm So Tired
Good Night (Ringo sang it but John wrote it)
Across the Universe
Because
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) I just love this song!

One and two are In My Life and Across the Universe. The others I really, really like and had to list them I couldn't list the others in order it depends on my mood.

Is all of a sudden Paul McCartney not a member of the Beatles? I do believe it is John and Paul that sing the harmony on because and all the other Beatle songs as well.

Actually it was John Paul and George on the Harmonies. Nine part Harmony to be exact! They laid the track down three times to make it that way! Just absolutely gorgeous harmony IMO the best they ever did!

On a side not. I love the Beatles very much. My first love of music. I respect and appreciate all of them as agroup and solo artist. But it is pretty well known who ever sang lead wrote the song or the majaroty of it. If the song was incomplete they would bring it to the other and get the other's input.

Quite agree bro -- wasn't this also released several years ago on the Rarities album? Seems to me it was.
Also Wharf, thanks for that correction on John's birthday thread -- 12/8 it was, not 12/9.
