Who is the weakest singer you've ever heard backed by a good or great band ? For me the cat on the mike for the Yardbirds wins hands down.

Doug Gray with MTB. Man, this guy had a voice that would make the Pope tear up.
But now he has lost his range. I really hate it for him. He has made it his life keeping
the Spirit alive. I can still hear him singing Ramblin.........he really had a set of pipes....

Long live The Marshall Tucker Band

No doubt about it. OMG Doug why oh why??

Oh well, everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, so I'm not gonna flame.

Warren Haynes in the ABB. I wish he would only sing these songs: Mean Woman Blues, .44 Blues, Into the Mystic, and Who's Been Talking.

That was Keith Relf, squabs. He had sometimes crippling asthma, plus he didn't moderate his substance intake. Even in recent years, Jeff Beck can't respect the late Keith's memory enough not to make fun of Keith's problems.

We had an interesting discussion of Keith etc. several moons ago (the thread starts out being about another Keith):

As for Jerry, Trey, and Doug: Yeah, they're all bad in their own ways! I don't like to hear any of them sing, and I'd enjoy their bands about 5X as much if they wouldn't sing. And Bob Weir, either (spillover from Swedish thread ).

Ohhhhh no, not you too Peter.

Well, it would be a boring place if we all agreed on everything. I do agree w/ you on Trey, but definitely not Jerry and Bob. The guy from the Yardbirds is ok too. I mean, he's not the worst I've ever heard.

Phil Lesh is a great bass player, and his "friends" are usually all top-notch musicians.

He needs to, uh, not sing.

Trey, Bob Weir definitely weak singers. Jerry had an ok voice early on. Whenever I hear people talk about The Dead's "sweet harmonies" I kind of cringe...just heard many poor Dead attempts at harmony over the years.
As for someone mentioning Warren and the ABB, that's just plain CRAZY. Gregg A should be glad that there is still someone with a strong voice in this band.....That should create a **** storm here

everyme have their right to think whtas god or not..but to say that jerry and bob are bad singers are dead wrong..its ok if you dont like their vocal syle..but they have emotion and quality and actually perry good techniqe to in their singing..just listen to the dead live from 72 and 73 and hear the blend of phil, jerry and bob on a good night..tracks like jack straw, tennesee jed, brokedown palace..that not bad singing..otherwise i dont have any ears for music and ive been a music teacher and singer for over 10 years..

and bob weir is one hell of guitar player..listen to weahter report from winterland 74..thats not easy folks..hope to get some feedback now

Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have all been mentioned here. This explains why I have never been a Dead fan..........to my ears, the vocals (with rare exception) usually sucked. They were one of those bands that didn't have anyone with a voice, and instead of hiring a singer, egos got in the way and the musicians sang anyway.

Jerry's an o.k. singer but I don't think his voice measure up to the quality of the music behind him. It's pretty nasally. I don't think Weir is a great singer either. Just my opinion.

I am no Deadhead but Jerry was a world class guitar player no question. And he could sing as well as many other musicians in rock. Just not great compared to the awesome music.

I think Gregg still sings pretty well though not where he was at in the early 70's. I agree with you about Warren. I think Warren is comparable to some of the great singers in rock.
