I noticed on Jack Pearson's page.......some dates had been canceled due to illness. Has Jack or someone in his band or family not been well?

woops.

I went to see Jack saturday night at 3rd & Lindsley. It was a last minute cancellation. I spoke with the guys that work there earlier in the day to make sure it was on, and they said yes. I get there, and he'd called in. The guy grabbed his throat (ie Jack has a sore throat or something).

Didn't act like it was serious or anything. I haven't checked his site for how many dates have been cancelled.

Jack has had flu like symptoms since last Friday. He had been working at Jimmy Nalls house on a project that Jimmy is producing on a "kid" from Virginia. Jack said that the "kid" had the "funk" and that he thinks he picked it up in the tight confines of Jimmy's studio. By Saturday evening, Jack had a fever above 102 degrees and he had to call the gig off. Now Elizabeth has it and is feeling pretty bad. The Pearsons plan to stay at home with the doors locked until this goes away.
As for October 14th, it was cancelled by the club because they had double booked that night. The club owner says that it would be tougher for the 14 piece Tyrone Smith Revue to find another gig because there are 14 of them, even though they had booked Jack's band first. Plus, Tyrone will play all of your favorites like Mustang Sally, Good Golly Miss Molly, Shout, and Dock Of The Bay back to back, plus a lot of medleys.
Anyone know of a decent venue around Nashville for this band to play?
Davida, PM me the next time you want to see JP, you'll bet comped. Sorry 'bout Saturday.

thanks nogood.

I usually get out there to see him every other time he plays or so. I live in Chapel Hill and work in Cool Springs, so for me to stay around until 9 or 10 makes it a late night back home. I wish he played more weekends-I was gonna get to see the whole set saturday.

But thanks again and I'll let you know. By the way, you wouldn't by chance happen to know if anyone taped the last show there with oteil???? With my beer goggles on I really didn't look around.

I spent the afternoon and evening with Jack's drummer Doug Belote last Saturday when he came to Hamilton, Ohio with the Jerry Douglas and the Best Kept Secret Band. Doug is a good guy who misses New Orleans a lot after making the move to Nashvegas. Doug is now touring with Jerry Douglas, and is fitting in nicely. I've known Jerry for a while, but this is the first time I got to sit down with Doug. We know many mutual cats from New Orleans- from Brian Stoltz of PBS (Doug appears on Brian's very funky 'East OF Rampart Street" CD) to the great drummer Johnny Vidocovich who is about to go on tour with Joe Sample of the Crusaders fame- Joe Krown, etc -and Doug says he misses the city and wants to try and stay a part of the scene down there even though he has moved north. Katrina changed a lot, and Doug says that there was something going on musically in New Orleans all the time before the storm, but it is going to take a while to come back.

By the way, Jerry Douglas has been breaking out in concert lately, along with his usual Beard model squareneck Dobros, his new Lap King "Bel Aire 8" Detroit Auto-inspired body electric 8-string ,

quote:
This design is geared to the player that desires more sonic diversity in their steel.

The three-piece “Detroit Auto” inspired body is crafted of Korina and features materials and styling that, until now, has not been seen in lap steels.

The fingerboard is bound with “grained” ivoroid and is crafted of ebony with large mother of pearl dots for position markers. Jumbo frets are used for better visibility in low light settings.

The peghead features a “grained” ivoroid overlay that reminds of the old “tuck and roll” interiors of classic American autos of the fifties. Schaller deco styled machine heads are used. The Lap King logo is hand cut from aluminum plate and buffed to a mirror shine to further the auto inspired look.

Two pick-ups are used on this model to give the player a much larger palette of tones to choose.

The “neck” pick up is a Danelectro LP-2 pre-aged series and is great for a bit more “strat” inspired sound very warm, and because of it’s positioning a bit deeper sounding.
The “bridge” pick up is a Seymour Duncan 59™ humbucker. Its proximity to the bridge gives a really nice “tight” country inspired sound but does away with the extraneous noise associated with a single coil pick up.

With Switchcraft™ brand master volume and tone knobs and three-way selector switch, there are tone combinations available on this lap steel that are not remotely possible on any other lap steel.

The strings are anchored with chrome ferrules and pass through the body. The vintage styled bridge features a removable hand rest to accommodate any playing style.

The nitrocellulose high gloss finish is offered in Seafoam Green and Shell Pink. Other colors are offered at an up charge please inquire.

Anyway, Doug says that there is a new Jack Pearson CD in the pipeline, so watch for that.

As for his gig with Douglas, he is loving and getting out in front of a lot of folks with it. They just announced a second leg of concerts opening for Paul Simon. Although you would think that a Paul Simon crowd wouldn't take much to the progressive sounds of the Jerry Douglas Band, they have been standing ovations along the way and selling a ton of CDs as they go.

Doug, himself, will put together an album in the near future as well.

Derek, did Doug tell you about the endorsement deal that Steve w/ Simon has gotten him? He's also proud of his autographed cymbal Steve gave him. Doug also does the best Jack Pearson impersonations you'll ever see or hear. Or, Doug's story of how he got together with Jack. (it involves a phone call with Col, Bruce. Doug Belote is as good a drummer as you'll ever hear, and a funny person to boot.
Meanwhile, Jack is in the final mix process for the JPB disc. His problem right now is that he's having trouble seeing the forest for the trees. Got my fingers crossed.

Cool on the endorsement deal. Actually, Doug and I caught up on the New Orleans connections as well as his hanging with the newgrass folks like Douglas. Right as we speak Doug and the Jerry Douglas band are in Ireland for a gig, which is pretty sweet. (Ask him about the Yosimite bed bugs). And yes, he is a prankster.

Looking forward to the JPB CD>
