Derek Trucks, at Avalon, Boston, Saturday night

Guitarists are oftentimes the extroverted ones onstage, relying on flashy moves and gimmicks to share the singer's spotlight. Derek Trucks takes a different route. There was no behind-the-back solo posturing or clownish teeth-strumming exploits at Avalon Saturday night. Trucks kept jaws dropping throughout the packed house through the sheer force and beauty of his playing. I don't think he moved once, and he definitely didn't speak to the audience, but his generous spirit was evident through his remarkable guitar skills.

Being the nephew of longtime Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks, he's had a little genetic help on his musical path. Trucks' residency as Dickey Betts' replacement in his uncle's band has gained the peach-fuzzed guitar slinger a healthy following comprised of grizzled Allman Brothers fans and younger, noodling acid jazz heads.

The show began with the gospel-flavored r & b stomp of "Save Me," with vocalist Mike Mattison displaying a ridiculous gender-bending vocal range. Trucks and his band showed why they shouldn't be lumped into the meandering jam band pack with the deliciously slow and uncluttered Meters funk of the Skip James classic "Crow Jane." They displayed a keen understanding of the "less is more" maxim that runs through all the best funk music.

Trucks then conjured the slide guitar presence of Ry Cooder on the Delta boogie of "Leavin' Trunk," with Mattison playing the wailing Taj Mahal role down to every gritty shout. At times, Trucks sounded eerily similar to the long-departed Duane Allman, his melodic and fluid slide guitar and shock of blond hair making the longtime Allman fans in the audience reminisce about the old Fillmore days.

Trucks' subsequent explorations into Indian grooves and Near- Eastern melodies quickly shook the cobwebs from their eyes, however, as did the band's take on the slinky Wes Montgomery jazz nugget "Bock to Bock."

Only once, during the trippy jam rock of "For My Brother," did the band stumble a bit, relying on over-used wah-wah pedaling, and downshifting into standard and mediocre groove rock fare. Fortunately, this was the lone exception to an otherwise impressive evening.

As expected, Trucks' guitar-shredding, blues-shouting wife, Susan Tedeschi, joined the band onstage to lend earthy vocals to the triumphant blues rock of "Baby, You're Right," followed by the joyful rock 'n' soul of Paul Pena's lost classic "Gonna Move." Even with his wife threatening to steal the spotlight, the mild-mannered Trucks seemed content to stay back and let his fantastic fingers do all the talking.

I am glad you are enjoying this and I enjoy your contributions. When I first came to this site I would listen to radio dTb. Now that is gone and I thought what better way than spread shows we have been to and can share our experiences with new fans of not only dTb but Derek as well! It truely is a great time to be a fan. And I will be honest and I hope Derek does not read this, but when I bought the first album I said Ok and filed it with the other 1000 or so cd's I had. I am kicking myself each day for not paying more attention to him! Derek if you are reading this let me say thank you for touching our lives with your passion and hard work in music!

Even in the two years here we have him EXPLODE with audiences now worldwide. Two Cd's a Dvd now Mike M with his own Cd shows in Europe and on tour with Clapton, a joint tour with Susan, and tv show appearences! So please keep the shows coming I know I can not stop posting and sharing stories. And once I figure how to upload show to Live Music Archive there will be more I promise!.

Right out of the gate with opening notes was solo after solo on "Pretending!" Derek was like a shining and shooting star! Clapton gave him plenty of room and gave everyone plenty of room actually. But as we all know and as I told many that were sitting around me!! I was there to support Derek. Fig had his DTB shirt on! The crowd went nuts for all Derek's solo's and it was a mostly standing crowd except for the few slower tunes!

I heard someone near me say. "Is that Derek Trucks?"" Of coarse!" Then they were like he plays that guitar like he's got oil spilled all over it! How does he do that! It seems to me that Derek will have an added fan base for sure! Which is awesome!

Here's some pictures that Franklin55 took that night. I know N1TRW has been away so I want to put them here so he doesn't miss seeing them.

Now, if someone has the link to one of the Boston Garden shows then that would double the pleasure!!!
