Don't know if the story is already common knowledge, or if The Mule ever discussed it, but....
I have to admit I was startled to read Bill Milkowski's excellent bio of Jaco Pastorius when he recounts the late bassist's stay in Bellevue: Jaco would entertain patients by playing music for them and "...instruct a few of them on the finer points of a new dance he had developed called "The Thorazine Shuffle"...???...
The lyrics make sense in this context

INSTANTLY recognizable bass line. One of my favorite Woody bass lines. Possibly my favorite Mule song....POSSIBLY.

To me, TS is one of the songs that defined the MULE in the early days. That song, along with Mule, gave this band their musical identity in my eyes. The modern versions of TS are very good, a little more flashy at times, but the bass just doesn't have that nasty thunder. Woody brought the pain when he played!!!

Peace

Couldn't agree more-this was Mule for me back in the day. Woody's bass line sure set the tone but the killer, for me at least, was Matt's drum solo especially when they did it live.

I concur kindofblue. "Thorazine Shuffle" is truely the one tune that Andy Hess can't make Woody's presence or lack of it disappear. As for where the title/tune originated, the term "thorazine shuffle" has been around. Warren didn't coin it. It would be neat if the impetus for the tune was in fact from Jaco's stay in the nut house. Title aside, "Thorazine Shuffle" is definately one of Warren's best songs, a signature original verson Mule tune and an all around classic.

Amazing that this thread should pop up. I just popped in a '99 Mule video late Friday night and, although I've heard and seen this song played live more times than I can count, I was just completely caught up in it. The trio each added so much to this piece, beginning with Woody's bone-rattling bass to Matt's alway's tasty solo, to Warren's downright brilliant lyrics. I agree that this tune was something special. I also agree that no one has been able to do justice to this bass line, not Hess, not Schools, not my man George Porter. Definition of the original Gov't Mule.
